It was hated by many when it came out, didn't make a whole lot of money, later put on a pedestal but still hated by many, currently it is still hated by many but seen as an influental film that birthed cyberpunk into popculture. I (and many along with me) believe that influence to be critical to the development of sci-fi movies. It's definitely got some shaky things going on, the central theme doesn't really show as well as it should and there's a lot of fascinating stuff left completely unexplored but it holds up pretty well today (and they invented various special effects for this movie, which is always bonus points (and got them oscar nominations)).

That there are five versions of the film is definately pushing it though.

The original Mad Max has a similar problem, its the birth of the post-apocalyptic movie into popculture. Its always been loved and hated by distinct parts of movie-goers and critics alike and those that like it love to lavish it with astronomical praise, which those that dislike it return in kind. But everyone has to respect it for the eye-opener it was.
