Yesterday, Marvel Studios announced the cast of Thor: Ragnarok, and there were a lot of big surprises in there. As well as confirming a few past rumours, the press release added some unexpected names to the cast and revealed which characters we should expect to see in the God of Thunder's third solo outing (which is going to pair him up with The Hulk in a movie which no longer looks like Planet Hulk).

Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is the mysterious and powerful new villain Hela, along with Jeff Goldblum who joins the cast as the eccentric Grandmaster, Tessa Thompson who will bring the classic hero Valkyrie to life on the big screen, and Karl Urba who will add his might to the fray as Skurge. Rounding out the cast is Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk along with a few other familiar faces.

What you'll find here is a look at each of those new additions, a breakdown of their history and abilities, and some thoughts on how they may end up factoring into the Marvel Phase 3 release.

5. The Grandmaster

loading

Despite the fact that he's a relatively obscure character, chances are that Jeff Goldblum is going to steal the show as the "eccentric" Grandmaster. Despite not having that many ties to the God of Thunder in the comic books, this member of the Elders of the Universe has worked closely with the Collector (they're like brothers in the source material and literal brothers in the Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon) and once took possession of the Infinity Gems.

With a wealth of powers - he's nearly immortal and invulnerable and can access energy from the power primordial - and a love of pitting super powered individuals against each other, it wouldn't be remotely surprising to see him in charge of a Planet Hulk style arena where he forces Thor and The Hulk to go to war with each other. After all, he played a key role in getting The Avengers and Justice League to fight at one point, so he's definitely powerful enough to make those two heroes battle it out if they for some reason end up in his clutches.

Will he have any ties to Thanos though? Time will tell on that front, but it wouldn't be too surprising.

4. Hela

loading

Hela's debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is long overdue, and it's clear from that concept art that she's going to take on the entirety of Asgard (and no doubt conquer it). After all, despite being the goddess of death and ruler of Hel and Nifleheim, the comic book version of Hela has attempted to make Thor's home her own on a number of occasions, while she has some very interesting ties to the Valkyries. They ferry souls into Valhalla, and Hela would love to corrupt them in order to further expand the numbers of those she lords over in Hel.

It's also worth noting that she's the daughter of Loki from a previous time before a Ragnarok event, so chances are that history will also be addressed, especially now that the God of Mischief sits upon the throne of Asgard. In terms of powers, she can easily hold her own in hand to hand combat with Thor, casts all sorts of illusions, fire energy bolts, and even command an entire legion of the dead as an army. Needless to say, she may be the most powerful foe Thor has faced to date.

3. Skurge

loading

If the name Skurge didn't immediately ring a bell, then his other moniker no doubt will. As The Executioner, he's worked alongside Loki on a number of occasions and battled Thor almost countless times. However, it's his ties to the Enchantress which are most interesting, and their relationship has seen Skurge deployed on all sorts of missions for his beloved when she schemes against Asgard. Chances are that Marvel will shake thing up a little here by having this character be one of Hela's followers, especially as there's no sign of Enchantress in Thor: Ragnarok.

Don't be too shocked to see him have a change of heart fairly late in the game though, especially as the comic book version of Ragnarok from a few years back saw him sacrifice himself in order to stop Hela's army as he and Thor reluctantly put their differences aside to team up. Wielding an incredibly powerful axe which can conjure ice and fire and tear open dimensional rifts, Skurge is also super strong and may very well end up being a match for the Jade Giant.

2. Valkyrie

loading

Another character whose big screen debut is long overdue, Valkyrie works on the opposite side of death to Hela, ushering fallen heroes into the halls of Valhalla. Chosen by Odin to lead the Valkyrior, her real name is Brunnhilde and she's been romantically linked to the God of Thunder a fair few times over the years. She's also served as a member of both The Avengers and The Defenders, so don't be too surprised to see Valkyrie make her presence felt in Avengers: Infinity War when the time comes to battle Thanos.

She wields the enchanted sword Dragonfang (given to her by Doctor Strange in the comics), she's extremely strong and is kind of like a more powerful Sif. With Creed's Tessa Thompson set to take on the role, the character's race has obviously been changed, but seeing as Marvel has already made Asgard a pretty diverse place by making Heimdall black, we hopefully won't have to put up with too many petitions and complaints this time around, especially as she's so talented. Regardless, expect her to have a big role here.

1. And The Rest...

loading

There are only four major new additions to Thor: Ragnarok, so we might as well take a closer look at the other confirmed cast members. Chris Hemsworth will obviously return as the God of Thunder, and it's now 100% official that Mark Ruffalo will make his presence felt as Bruce Banner/The Hulk.

Thor regulars Tom Hiddleston (who has previously refused to confirm or deny his involvement), Idris Elba, and Sir Anthony Hopkins are all returning, but there's been no mention of the actors who make up The Warriors Three. The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit took to Twitter to reveal that sources have told him Jaimie Alexander won't be back as Sif because of commitments to Blindspot, but the actress later dropped the following which teased some sort of cameo.

Needless to say, this is a pretty huge cast, and despite this official announcement, we're probably going to see at least a few more additions over the coming weeks and months, especially as Thor: Ragnarok isn't released until November 3rd, next year...

Which of these characters are you most looking forward to seeing in Thor: Ragnarok? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the usual place.

@AleSir19 - Also i want to say that, for me Thor Ragnarok clearly will mix elements from Ragnarok stories and Planet Hulk.

Only that we wont have Hulk become one of the slaves of the "Red King" who will force him to fight for him but one slave of the "Grand Master" also is clear that the person who will end up fighting againts Hulk will be Thor, not Silver Surfer and he will be the one who free him to get revenge againts the "Grand Master"/"Red King".

About Death, here the thing come strange, Marvel could make a great actress like "Cate Blanchett" play an Universal Entity Death who take different faces and forms or we could see different versions of Death.

For me, i am in and pretty sure in the idea that "Cate Blanchett" will play Death, who here takes the form of Hela, but isnt Hela from the comics, but Hela from the MCU, an Universal Entity for Death.

That would put the movie in another level, because we could have a Main Story of how finally Loki kills Odin who ends up trap in Hell and how with the help of "Hela" he wants to Rule Asgard.

But sadly Thor who is searching answers for what the Infinity Stones are enter in the picture and he begins to see how corrupt his father Kingdom is.

It would be an awesome way to connect everything, because at the end this could be the movie where Thanos meet face to face Death. While Thor becomes King of Asgard or ends up half death.

I would be a lot of money, that Thor takes the place of Silver Sufer also in how Infinity Gauntlet played. With Thor ending the movie almost kill after trying to stop Thanos and how he ask help to Dr. Strange.

Is clear Hulk will be left behind in this movie at the end like sacrifice mode and that Executioner will have something to do with a mission to hell, because at the comics, Thor and the Executione goe to hell in a rescue mission once. Because Malekith the Accusser had a lot of souls trap in Hel and at the end of it, The Executioner begins the Ragnarok by destroying the Death Ship in revenge, while Thor escape hel...

I mean they will mix shit that is clear. What is clearly secure is "Grand Master" will take the role of the "Red King" in Planet Hulk, "Hela" is a face or side of the Universal Entity "Death", Loki makes a deal with Hela to kill Odin and trap him in hel, Hela tries to begin Ragnarok, while the "Grand Master", her and Thanos play a deadly game of power and Infinity Stones.

The Executioner/Loki begins the Ragnarok and sacrifice, Thor is left like King and half death at the end of the movie after try to stop Thanos. Hulk sacrifice himself at the end of the movie and is left behind...

@AleSir19 - Never thought of Cate Blanchet's Hela being the MCU version of Death and having ties to Thanos, but that could actually work if handled right. If that is in fact the case, I'm hoping she's not totally evil, but rather a sort of force of inevitability instead, like Ragnarok is something that needs to happen for some reason and she has to make it happen, and the Asgardians are trying to prevent it by standing up to her. Basically make it a bit more morally complex, and then maybe have Loki doing his thing and stirring things up the whole time. And obviously, by the end of the film, no matter the actual outcome (whether or not Ragnarok is prevented) we have some sort of meeting between Thanos and Death/Hela.
That'd be really cool, so yeah, good idea as far as Hela being Death. Hope you're right.

But Josh...

Will this be the best installment of the MCU and be on par with the best CBMs?

(I'm making fun of his Apocalypse review. I still think I'll like the movie, despite the reviews, but... Damn, Josh)

@Quicker - I saw some seconds ago the scene of Quicksilve in Apocalypse in Youtube in really bad resolution and now i understand why how many Critics of the movie (24 reviews) had a huge emphasis in how Bryan Singer and Fox, could not have done this movie 20 years ago...

I believe i never saw so many CGI trying to look realistic and good, i believe i never feel so interested but at the same time bore, i believe i never felt a song was being strech or taking too much time and off course i believe 6 minutes or more of slow motion are too much...

Hell of a scene, is cools, looks cool, but at the end... Is trying to be funny, but isnt, is only a CGI orgy... Again... just when i believe we had this talk with Zack "The Hack" Snyder back in the year, now i see we need to have a little "one to one", "face to face", "cara a cara", conversation with Bryan Singer about why he doesnt add more Green Screen and CGI and less story and actors.

Because at the end, why you need a story and actors, if you have 400 million dollars, 80 green screen studios and 250 million dollars just for CGI. You can make with it whateve you want... You can even bring back to life heat Ledger and put you in your movie mother [frick]er...
