20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment have started to develop a big screen adaptation of one of the most popular video games in history.  MEGA MAN.

David Ready and Michael Finfer are overseeing for the project, which could mean good things the character.  They are the same team behind Fox’s Planet of the Apes films.  Mike Ireland and Ryan Horrigan are also on board.

What do you think?  Could this be a future franchise for 20th Century Fox?  Sound off in the comments.

“Mega Man, originally called Rock Man in Japan, was first released in 1987 for Nintendo by Capcom. The backstory for the game is that a man named Dr. Light and the android that he built to be his lab assistant, Rock, were betrayed by the evil Dr. Wily, who stole Dr. Light’s work and made evil robot with special weapons to take over the world.

Dr. Light reconfigured his lab assistant into a battle droid with armor and a cannon, which he then called Mega Man. Once victorious over the evil robots, Mega Man can mimic their weapons, which are useful in the games as certain enemies are vulnerable to other enemies weapons."

I feel like Nintendo has a gold mine under their feet when it comes to movies. I would love to see films for all of their characters. However, CGI movies would be the way to go. Obviously a live action Mario movie would be weird af.

Would only work as one of those CGI animation things. I loved Mega-Man, but shit would be a joke in live action. Just my opinion

And ya. That corporate rape machine has sure been making it's rounds

Actually, maybe it could work if they approach it a bit like Chappie meets Ex Machina.

A futuristic automated world, with a few engineering robots going off the reservation. Megaman (Rock or Project ROK or whatever) is a prototype heuristic systems analyst that actually incorporates the parts of the enemies as he defeats them. It... might work...

Liva action, even, in might work.

The only question I have is what collection of horribly irritating human supporting characters are they going to flood the story with? Megaman (like most video game characters) is his best when he's alone against the world. But like all video game movies, they will surround him with archetypes that only detract from the relatively simplistic story.

"Hey, you know that game about a female Indiana Jones where you spend most of the games completely alone, trying to survive death traps and wild animals in claustrophobic environments? Let's make that into a movie where Lara Croft does almost zero of any of that!"

Warcraft, I get it. It's a series of strategy-games and an MMO that DO have a pretty in-depth lore, but it's bogged down by the nature of the games themselves, which don't lend very well to a narrative, so turning the Warcraft games into LoTR-inspired films ISN'T a bad idea.

Assassin's Creed, given that it takes place within the AC universe, I have no problem with, as that means it'll ADD to it rather than trying to do something parallel to the games, which is lame.

Mega Man, though? What should be done with Mega Man is making more games, not trying to make a film out of him! Capcom, you have already lost my faith and Fox, you suck, Mega Man doesn't need a movie.

@MexicanSuperman

Prince of Persia, the Tomb Raider movies, Silent Hill, Hitman, Max Payne, the Street Fighter movies, and even goddamn Super Mario Bros does not a good track record make. I cannot think of one, single, GOOD film adaptation of a video game series that has been released in theatres with the intent of making the big bucks. Not a single goddamn one.

... please guys remember the GREAT track record of bad videogame movies, remember f4ntastic... I don't have much fate, in fact im scare that they could give this the okay... I like Mega Man i really like the Mega Man games, the X series, Zero Series, ZX series, Legends Series, Battle Network Series, Star Force Series... But i don't want then in movies because of the track record that goes from bad to meh as the top possible ranking. To the most recent failure of Fox... And sure they work in a lot of movies but Videogame movies have a worse track record in missing then hitting a very low percent of the total. Compare to Super Heroe movies... Heck even Anime movies have more hits then the Video Game movies have

FFS, they're making an ANGRY BIRDS movie! And there's plans to make a film based on Temple Run and even f*cking TETRIS! There is nothing positive about 99% of any upcoming game to film adaptions.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939

I have to agree with you as well as agree with you. Would a Mario movie work? Yes, but it would have to be animated.

A Smash movie would i say would never work. Why? Because games and movies is two diffrent types of storytelling, as well as has two diffrent kinds of audience.

You could prehaps manage to crossover Fire Emblem, with Kid Icarus and/or Legend of Zelda, or Kirby with Mario but not all together. You want to look at what charachters and worlds, could fit together in a story perspective, and not jumping the shark to much

(And have Smash Brothers as live action would never work, do to mostly Pokemon and Kirby)

The reason for that, is because it would not be so much jumping the shark, in terms of what types of worlds the charachters in said game's live in. It would be especially difficult to even try to have every FE charachter that is in Smash Brothers, do to the fact that the charachters from there are from diffrent timeslines/worlds. The only ones that shares the same world/story of Fire Emblem charachters that are in Smash are Robin and Lucina (which if you don't know who those two are, it is the charachters that are on my profilepic.)

@Kurban

I have a belive that allmost everything can be adapted to a movie (with some expceptions such as Emojis and PEZ which are getting their own movies)

Just look at Sonic Sat Am cartoon. They took basicly nothing, but turned in to something in terms of story, and at the same time, keept true to the source material

Maze Runner? That is easy. You could use the namebranch to sell your own version of Indiana Jones, with no worries to piss of fans, in terms of not being true to the sourcematerial like, Tomb Raider or Uncharted could have a chance of doing

Tetris. Since the producer said that it would be a sc-fi epic, the only thing i can think of is that they will do something simular to pixels/battleship

Angry Birds. Well at first i was sceptical as you where when i first about it. But then more that i think of it, it could actually work. You could do it as a more crazy and brutal version of Finding Nemo, with them being in a quest of finding their eggs at first, but then find out that the pigs are the ones that took it

If there's one thing FOX does best, it's taken adaptations of our favorite stories, video games, or our childhood characters and really bring them to life on screen. Just look at this amazing filmography to show their credibility in filming adaptations:

Planet of the Apes
Dardevil
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Garfield: The Movie
Alien vs Predator
Fat Albert
Elektra
Fantastic Four
X-Men: The Last Stand
Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties
Eragon
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Hitman
Alvin and the Chipmunks
Alien vs Predator: Requiem
Jumper
Max Payne
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li
Dragonball Evolution
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
The A-Team
Predators
Fantastic Four (2015)
Hitman: Agent 47

Really guys, what could go wrong?

@MexicanSuperman - Dude I wish we could get Megaman like in your pic that you posted and stayed true to its origins and storyline.

But come on its FOX were talking about they've mettle with everything in pop culture and manged to screw it up.

But lots of hope for Deadpool that will surprise us thanks to the director Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds constant push for the movie.

If we get A Megaman movie mre than likely it will be more like this.

I found SuperCat hard at work again saving the world one coke can at a time!
