The MINECRAFT Movie Gets A Release Date

The Minecraft movie just received a release date and it will go head-to-head with The Avengers and Star Wars in 2019. Do you think the popular video game has a chance to hold its own a the box office?

The Minecraft film, which will be directed by It's Always Sunny co-creator  Rob McElhenney, will arrive in theaters on May 25, 2019.  That means it will open in theaters against the tail-end of Avengers: Infinity War Part Two's (May 03) domestic run and compete directly against Star Wars: Episode IX (May 23).  The open-world, 3D sandbox game is very popular with the younger generation so perhaps Warner Bros. is hoping kids can sway their parents away from trying to relive their childhood starfighter fantasies?

Shawn Levy was initially attached to direct the project but parted ways with WB after his ideas didn't mesh with what the studio envisioned.  The Angry Birds movie was surprisingly a box office success and despite a poor domestic haul, Warcraft is also expected to turn a profit.  Could we be standing on the precipice of the video game movie golden age?

I have faith in this working only because of Rob McElhenney.

As much as I adore Always Sunny, I don't have a lot of hope. And putting it on that date is suicide.

if theres a game for it, they'll try to make a movie franchise for it. Nothing is safe.

I'm interested on how this will go, because basically all possible storylines have been used for a roleplay or video (even school shootings and terrorist attacks) but I have faith in this project, from what I've heard about the director, this could work.
