The Minecraft film, which will be directed by It's Always Sunny co-creator Rob McElhenney, will arrive in theaters on May 25, 2019. That means it will open in theaters against the tail-end of Avengers: Infinity War Part Two's (May 03) domestic run and compete directly against Star Wars: Episode IX (May 23). The open-world, 3D sandbox game is very popular with the younger generation so perhaps Warner Bros. is hoping kids can sway their parents away from trying to relive their childhood starfighter fantasies?
Shawn Levy was initially attached to direct the project but parted ways with WB after his ideas didn't mesh with what the studio envisioned. The Angry Birds movie was surprisingly a box office success and despite a poor domestic haul, Warcraft is also expected to turn a profit. Could we be standing on the precipice of the video game movie golden age?
