Nicolas Winding Refn Met With WB About Directing WONDER WOMAN, But Wouldn't Do It Without Christina Hendricks
The Drive director has since turned his attention to Batgirl, but at one time Refn was interested in helming a big-screen take on Wonder Woman, and actually came closer than you might think...
Before Warner Bros. had even officially greenlit their Wonder Woman movie, Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives, The Neon Demon) spoke about his interest in directing the picture on several different occasions, maintaining that Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks would be perfect for the lead role. At the time we figured he was just throwing it out there, but as it turns out, Refn did take a meeting about possibly signing on to bring the iconic DC character to life on the big screen.
During the latest edition of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Refn laughed off the idea that the studio would ever seriously consider handing him the reigns of the project, but also admits to a "very early meeting" about it. Apparently the director insisted that Hendricks would have to star as Diana right off the bat, and that's as far as the discussion went.
Of course, Patty Jenkins has now wrapped production on Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot and fans seem very happy with what they've seen so far - but would you have been interested in Refn's take on the character? Sound off below.
