In a recent interview with IGN, actor Shawn Ashmore, who played Iceman in the X-Men movie franchise by FOX spoke about Iceman's recent change in sexuality in the comics while he was promoting his newest Xbox exclusive game, Quantum Break. The seasoned comic book movie actor talked about how that might be interesting to change Iceman's sexuality in the franchise's live action version as well. “Obviously the comics and movies are separate. I wonder what the transition would be because we’ve sort of established Bobby as having a love interest in Rogue and having a love interest in sort of Kitty Pryde, but I think it’d be really interesting.”
He then goes on to talk about how he would be interested in continuing to play Bobby Drake in the future should his sexuality change or be revealed in the film franchise's storyline. “I think it’d probably be the most interesting thing that could happen to Bobby in the films. If they decided to take the story that way, it’d be incredibly dramatic, it’d be an interesting storyline, and it would give Bobby a great character arc. I’d definitely be open to that, but again, I’m not sure if they want to take the character in that direction. I have no idea how they would play that out. I think it’d be very interesting.” It would certainly be interesting to see how that might play out in the film franchise with the already established characters. Then again, X-Men Days of Future Past hit the reset button and we might see it happen in future X-Men films.
Shawn Ashmore is no stranger to comic book roles. He appeared on Smallville during its early seasons while his twin brother, Aaron Ashmore portrayed Jimmy Olsen later on. When asked about his future and possibly taking on a new comic book role, the actor had this to say, “Yeah. I think at a certain point you can be saturated as an actor if you’re playing too many [comic book] characters, but there’s been some really successful people that have done multiple comic book characters, so I’d definitely be open to that, but I think it would have to be the right fit, you know? Especially because I’ve played Iceman for 12 years at this point. I feel like you sort of live in that skin, so would have to be something just perfect to branch out into.” Although the chances of him returning to be Iceman in a future X-Men film are slim, I'm curious to see if he pursues a new comic book role and which it would be.
