5 Marvel Villains NARCOS Star Boyd Holbrook Could Be Playing In THE WOLVERINE 3

On Friday, we learned that Boyd Holbrook has landed the lead villain role in The Wolverine 3. Looking at that vague description though, five classic X-Men baddies stand out as the most likely possibilities...

With the likes of Justice League and Spider-Man heading our way next year, it's easy to forget that 2017 also marks the final appearance of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The movie - directed by James Mangold - is believed to be an adaptation of the classic Old Man Logan storyline, but with the Red Skull off limits to Fox, who could Boyd Holbrook be playing? All we know so far is that he's been cast as, "a relentless, calculating and intense head of security for a global enterprise who is set against Logan."

That description sounds an awful lot like a slightly different take on the role played by the Red Skull in Old Man Logan, and when you look at the X-Men comic books, there are a lot of great villains who could be used in lieu of that Nazi despot. All of the characters listed below deserve the big screen treatment and they all share a history with Wolverine. Unfortunately, as Jackman's tenure nears its end, there's only room for one of them, but which of this lot has the Narcos star been cast as?

Well, these are who I believe are the most likely possibilities, so hit NEXT to find the top contenders...

5. Bastion

loading

When public opinion started turning against mutants, Bastion was quick to step in and begin a covert war against them called Operation: Zero Tolerance on behalf of the US government. Unaware for most of his life that he was in fact a Super Sentinel, it was his mutant-termination directives which prompted the villain to go after the X-Men, and he succeeded in both taking over the X-Mansion and capturing Professor X (which could explain Patrick Stewart's role here).

It was only when his origins were revealed that Bastion was stopped, and while he's more of an X-Men villain than a Wolverine one, having Logan go after the guy who brought down the X-Men and kidnapped his mentor could work really well, especially if he isn't revealed to be a Sentinel until the final act in time for an epic battle.

4. Romulus

loading

Holbrook may not exactly look the part of the massive Romulus, but let's face it, this wouldn't be the first time Fox has taken some liberties with a character's appearance! An ancient mutant with some very mysterious ties to Logan and every other lupine (Sabretooth, Wolfsbane, Daken, etc.), he was recently revealed to be the true mastermind behind Weapon X.

If Mangold were to scrap the many convoluted aspects of this villain, he could make for an interesting foe who brings together Wolverine and Sabretooth - Liev Schreiber has been rumoured to return to that role for a while now - for a team-up as unique as Logan and Hawkeye in the Old Man Logan comic book. Either way, there's definitely some potential with this villain if he's handled the right way, and I'm sure Holbrook would nail it.

3. Mr. X

loading

Chances are you won't be familiar with Mr. X, but long before he was poorly brought back for the Dark Reign era, this villain was one of the best things to come out of Frank Tieri and Sean Chen's underrated Wolverine run. A telepath with the ability to predict his opponent's moves before they make them, Mr. X is a seriously f***ed up dude, and has soundly beaten both Logan and Taskmaster.

In fact, the only way Wolverine eventually managed to overcome him was to unleash a Beserker Rage, something we've all been dying to see on the big screen for a very long time now. With a few alterations to his story, Mr. X could very easily take on the role of the lead protagonist in this movie, and his presence means we'd be treated to some down and dirty REAL fights not hindered by CGI.

2. Dog

loading

For a long time, many fans theorised that Dog was actually Sabretooth (even X-Men Origins: Wolverine seemed to be under that assumption when it made Sabretooth Logan's half-brother). However, it's recently been made apparent that that isn't the case, and Holbrook's villain being revealed as a member of Wolverine's family might be really cool if they handle it the right way, throwing in some flashbacks and making this a twist which actually matters.

Dog hasn't been used that well in recent years - time travel; 'Nuff said - so it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for Fox to take some creative liberties with the character here, and those scars across his face would help make this a visually distinctive villain. That and the fact that his squabble with Wolverine would be personal would be fun to see.

1. Graydon Creed

loading

Thanks to the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, there are literally decades worth of mutant history we know nothing about. So, whose to say that Sabretooth and Mystique couldn't have hooked up at some point? Graydon Creed is their son, and after being abandoned by his parents as a child, the villain ended up developing a deep hatred for them and the mutant race.

If he were to be the big bad of this movie, I don't think it would hurt to make him a mutant, but the fact that he's human certainly wouldn't make him any less threatening (just look at William Stryker) and his involvement here could open the door to
Schreiber's return which would be no bad thing. Plus, just look at that teaser image above...there's definitely something of a resemblance there, don't you guys think?

Tell us, which of these villains would you like to see Boyd Holbrook play in The Wolverine 3? Have we missed any perfect suggestions? As always, let us know your thoughts in the usual place.

@strigorimortis - I'm not the biggest x-men fan too, but this is the end of an era, Hugh Jackman's last time as Wolverine. Everyone must go and see it. And it can only be better than those previous solo Wolverine movies. I've heard that Patrick Stewart will also be in it. Give it a try.

Also, the report said his character is an ORIGINAL character. So he will be no one listed in this article.

" TheWrap adds that he’s an original character, as opposed to someone from the comics."

Mr. X would be nice

But Victor from X-Men origins can be Dog, not Sabretooth, cuz Sabretooth is in X-Men 1 and they are both different people.

@xinstituto - Origins doesn't count i think. Events in other movies were erased by changing the timeline, Origins was erase because everybody wanted to skip the events of this movie and just forget about it all.

@jerryblake - Sabretooth at varying times is depicted in different ways/relations to Wolverine (including the comics and cartoon series). In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Schreiber is Creed. Creed is Sabretooth. Knowing the characters helps to understand the timeline in the film series.
X-Men: Days of Future Past erased much of the film timeline, but not ALL of X-Men Origins. Origins starts off hundreds of years ago. Days of Future Past only alters the 70’s and onward. Your hope/wish/belief that Origins is completely erased is incorrect. Creed is still Sabretooth, and still Logan’s half-brother.
@xinstituto – your argument is also unsubstantiated. The actors for Sabretooth have been different in X-Men, and X-Men Origins; but this does not make the character, two different characters.

Needless to say – I think many people CMB users, fanboys, general public alike have a difficulty with the X-Men timeline (understandable). But what is nice is that Days of Future Past clears up a lot of the inconsistencies in different ways; not all by altering the timeline. Those of you who don’t understand things in the X-Men films – I welcome your bombardment of questions/arguments. I can answer them all.

@jerryblake - Half of it counts because the events of DOFP is in 1973, so everything before that counts

@xinstituto - I love this timeline explanation, but I think Origins doesn't take place in 79 like everyone thinks. It shows Stryker finding Logan and Victor in 73, then shows them on the team, then Logan quits, and it jumps to six years later. However, we have absolutely no idea how long he was on the team for. Most fans think it takes place in 79 for another reason, 3 Mile Island. The meltdown happened in 79, but it didn't COLLAPSE. The way they make it seem in the movie, is that the 3 Mile incident already happened, which is why the island is abandoned. I think it takes place after 79, and Stryker sets up shop there because no one would think to find him there, since it's abandoned. They also make it explicitly clear in the first and second X-Men movies that Logan's been on the run for nearly fifteen years. X-Men came out in 2000, and X2 takes place only months after the first one. So I'm under the impression that Stryker finds Logan and Victor in 73, they are on the team for about seven or so years (I think they're on the team for much longer in the comics), Logan quits in 80, then the plot picks back up in 86.

@burningblue52 - I can't understand why they can't just make a good X-Men movie. Tell me that, willya! heheh ;)

ImBatman4realz - 5/21/2016, 12:39 AM
@Pathogen - Man they're good for what they are. I don't think we'll ever get a fully-gunho-superhero film from the X-Men. Although I've heard that X-Men: Apocalypse kind of sets that up for the next film. After the success of Deadpool, maybe they will start to be that way more so
Pathogen
Pathogen - 5/21/2016, 9:16 AM
@burningblue52 - I think the fans have settled for mediocre and continue to delude themselves by stubbornly defending them and hyping them up. Sure...they are bottom barrel tentpole/summer fare, but that only gets you so far. While there will be superhero/cbm movies that will be remembered, these movies will be like the 80's B movies...guilty pleasures to watch 5 years from now, and barely remembered.
Which is a shame, because there COULD have been X-films done as well as Nolan's Batman, who will be remembered as good movies, not just good comic book movies.
