RUMOR: McTeigue Taking on Magneto

IMDB lists James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) as "in talks" to direct the movie from a script by David Goyer (Batman Begins) who was unable to direct due to his commitment to his The Invisible Man.
While Magneto has been the ugly step-child of the X-sequels, going from hot to "on hold" then seemingly being dropped in favor of teen oriented X-Men First Class. But now with the tremendous box office success of "Wolverine" all X-projects look to have been given the green light, and this includes X-Men Origins: Magneto.

20th Century Fox is now working on at least four X-movies: a Deadpool movie, a Wolverine sequel, X-Men trilogy prequel (X-Men: First Class), and X-Men Origins: Magneto.

X-Men Origins: Magneto will expand on Magneto's concentration camp beginnings, shown briefly in X-Men, and his fractious relationship with Charles Xavier. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner has called the script "fantastic."

JUAQING PHEONIX FOR MAGNETO
GUNSMITH - 5/13/2009, 9:18 AM
I thought Joaqin Phoenix retired to be a rapper? I do like him as an actor. What about the scar though? Guess they could cover it up.
dizzle716 - 5/13/2009, 9:24 AM
NONOOO Keep Ian McKellen. Get a younger looking up and coming actor to play young Magento, and keep Ian for the older one.
ComicMans1234 - 5/13/2009, 9:27 AM
they should have a clip of wolfy saving him and the other captured jews for a cameo
cbsmitty2 - 5/13/2009, 9:29 AM
yea him and captain america
KingCold420 - 5/13/2009, 9:45 AM
I thought they were going to go with Paul Bettany for this? He would be absolutely PERFECT!
adamant877 - 5/13/2009, 9:47 AM
A nightcrawler movie would be so much more fun

this magneto movie would be something like a shindlers list? that screams summer block buster :/
loganaspatch - 5/13/2009, 9:50 AM
@adamant877 - I also heard that Paul Bettany was linked to the role and I was fine with it. Did you know he did the voice of Jarvis in IronMan.
ironknight27 - 5/13/2009, 9:51 AM
Cool!!!
but as long as they are creating some of the other XO movies at the same time....

XO-Wolverine, DeadPool and First Class...

I wonder if they are going to make First class time line right.

In wolverine The only item that gave away a time line near the end was the Military Humvee's. The earliest use of them were in 1985-1989 (designed about 1979/1980)..

So X-Men First class can't be b4 1985 based on that.
vonstallin - 5/13/2009, 10:13 AM
MAGNETO should follow on from the first X-MEN movie, show the same CAMP footage for the start, then go from there! ; )
LEEE777 - 5/13/2009, 10:15 AM
@DIZZLE716

Joaqin Phoenix retiring was kind of an inside joke between him and a couple of actor pals, he hasn't really retired from acting to become a musician, he was just making fun of the media.
Talontd - 5/13/2009, 10:16 AM
Why do we need a Magneto film? How much more can they milk this character?
Deathlok - 5/13/2009, 10:22 AM
Ian McKellan sucks as Magneto for only 1 reason... Magneto is a very physical villain, and McKellan doesn't appear to be physical at all... Get a young version of Magneto and keep that actor the whole movie, don't need an old Magneto.
IronManisGOAT - 5/13/2009, 10:22 AM
"Producer Lauren Shuler Donner has called the script "fantastic."" - I think I read somewhere she said the same thing about XO:Wolverine, one of the two biggest problems of that movie.

Fact is, based on her resume, it's a safe bet that when Lauren Shuler Donner is attached you can count out any real serious tone to a Magneto film, she's all about the youth and child friendly tones. Regardless what the comic book property is, she'll bastardize it for the most part for the sake of selling lunchboxes and pajamas like the rest of the FOX suits she's in bed with.
WeaponX - 5/13/2009, 10:32 AM
Daniel Day Lewis=Magneto
ladsonb190 - 5/13/2009, 10:38 AM
Amen Weapon X.
Deathlok - 5/13/2009, 10:38 AM
I hate to disagree with you WeaponX, but I HIGHLY doubt that any movie production involving the holocaust would be "tamed down" or produced as "kid friendly". That would mean a huge bullseye painted on the forehead of anyone involved in the film. Not likely.
(Not impossible, but let's be realistic... not likely.)
They'll keep the tone serious and thought provoking, and the action intense, and revenge driven.

wolverine0022 - 5/13/2009, 10:54 AM
IM STILL HOPING FOR A DEATHLOCK MOVIE..
GUNSMITH - 5/13/2009, 11:10 AM
they'll tone it down @ADAMANT77 or will not ultimately be done at all!
dellamorte1872 - 5/13/2009, 11:21 AM
@IronManisGOAT You are right, even though I think they were going more for the Magneto in God Loves, Man Kills in the movies he is still in a bit better shape than Ian McKellen. I did like Ian McKellen for the role though, simply because he is a good actor.
Sortis - 5/13/2009, 11:58 AM
Not sure, but isn't Ian McKellen having some health issues? I mean, he isn't exactly young by any means.
dizzle716 - 5/13/2009, 12:05 PM
I doubt Sir Ian will be anywhere near this movie. I dunno, theres not much of a story there but with the right script and cast it could make for a decent drama
Rorschach01 - 5/13/2009, 12:10 PM
I prefer just the Magneto movie. He's the hero who breaks out of the concentration camps and finds his way to the Savage Land, This way they can Somehow fit in Sinister, by making him the bad guy.

First class needs to be on TV like Smallville.
thwip284 - 5/13/2009, 12:38 PM
Enough with the flippin' "Origins" thing already! Do we really need to try and force ourselves to swallow another one of Fox's "creative" interpretations (or commonly known as raping) of another X-Character?

I love Magneto, but a solo Magneto movie is gonna be boring as hell unless you bring in some other mutants.

X-Men First Class? I really don't want the X-Men to turn into "90210" or "The Hills"

If Fox absolutely cannot give up the X-Men property, then I really wish they would at least take a back seat, collect the money, and just give complete and total creative control to Marvel. They get their money, and we get our Comic X-Men.
BLACKWINGS17 - 5/13/2009, 12:51 PM
First Class would work better as a tv show but I feel Fox wants to capitalize on teen drama movies like Twilight in order to make more money. Magneto could work as a movie and from what I heard from the script it is sounds like it is going to be like "Hannibal Rising" where Mags goes on the hunt for Nazi War criminals.
ironknight27 - 5/13/2009, 12:51 PM
By the way....

MAGNETO shouldn't be anything to do with kid friendly, it's gotta be real!!!

(As real as you could make it lol).
LEEE777 - 5/13/2009, 1:03 PM
goddamnit.

mcteigue shoulda directed wolverine, and hood magneto...
yellowtiger - 5/13/2009, 1:34 PM
I dont like this xmen origins shite. Just call it what it is and when they put together the box set put xmen origins really big on the box. It seems a little dumbed down to me; like anyone is going to go see magneto is not going to know it is in reference to the xmen.

Im not big on mclellan they could get someone else to play his older self and i would be very happy about it. I always liked jim lee's work of him.(well, it IS Jim Lee) His face is more noble and open.
Betty - 5/13/2009, 1:35 PM
I won't knock Ian McKellan cause his acting was great and he captured the feel of Magneto's ability to lead and bring together a bunch of evil mutants, BUT, yeah, he shoulda been jacked.

Anyway, I'll say that Magneto is one of my all-time favorite villains, and that he's a character who's true potential-- in the comics and the movies-- has yet to truly be captured and utilized, but having said that, is his origin really deep enough to do a film on? Wolverine? Absolutely. An X-Men prequel? Sure. Magneto? Ah, no. And keep in mind that I just said that I'm a huge Magneto fan. Better idea: put together the original Brotherhood lineup of Magneto, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Toad and Mastermind in "X-Men: (NOT REALLY THE) First Class." And MAKE IT AWESOME!!!
MetalHead - 5/13/2009, 1:53 PM
McT is making his rounds... I hope he gets the Conan movie to. I think he will give it the right style.
J. "Falcon" Ayers - 5/13/2009, 2:04 PM
Well Betty... they have to put X-Men in the title if they wish to use and other X-Men characters other then the title character. Fox if they want to keep the rights has to release an "X-Men" movie, not a movie named after a single character. So they put X-Men Origins in the title so that they can use other X-Men characters and hold on to the rights.
ryanjdrf1992 - 5/13/2009, 2:12 PM
no, i really believe that this movie could have the potential to be awesome. show magneto's bitter outlook on non mutants and his friendship w/ xavier disintigrate, throw in some crazy action with him bending the metal of tanks and stuff...could be awesome!!!!!!
JeremyBentham - 5/13/2009, 4:07 PM
...but yeah no ian mckellen please

JeremyBentham - 5/13/2009, 4:08 PM
I don't really want a Magneto movie, i like the character in the comics but I'm so sick of him in the movies, I wanted a Wolverine movie due to the fact that he has such a huge background that it had potential but Magneto doesn't have much to work with due to all his background was summed up in the first 3 movies.
Osiris - 5/13/2009, 4:13 PM
Exactly Osiris. And again, I'm a huge Magneto fan.
MetalHead - 5/13/2009, 4:20 PM
When I first heard about the first X-Men movie. I would have picked Rutger Hauer for Magneto. He's tall and pretty built and he can play some villains (Blade Runner). http://film.guardian.co.uk/pictures/image/0,8545,-10905212907,00.html

Dragodon - 5/13/2009, 4:50 PM
ladsonb190: Daniel Day Lewis=Magneto, let that soak in thats totally a great idea.
KheshireKat - 5/13/2009, 5:18 PM
This movie has a lot of potential, Magneto has a better backstory than most X Men characters, it could be more easily translated onto film. I would like Ian in it, but more at the end than the beginning.

I like a lot of the names suggested here Daniel Day, is a great dramatic actor. And Ruter Hauer plays amazing villains, he brings a human element to the people we are supposed to hate, or aren't even human. I mean he was amazing as Roy in Blade Runner, he was so dramatic and edgy, awesome. And my other favorite performance of his would have to be as the Huntsman in 10th Kingdom. Speaking of which, how come there was no sequel to that mini series?
THEHAWK - 5/13/2009, 6:33 PM
Too bad fox is doing it again. Nope I will definitely skip or sneak in to this one.
SuperFlyinPwrs - 5/13/2009, 10:06 PM
ryanjdrf1992--Really? Devious.

DD Lewis for Magneto is a great idea, eh em, "FOR GOOD AND ALL!!!"

HE DOES SEEM scuse me. He does seem kinda quakery weird these days though. I think he might be out of touch and wonder WHO magneto is.
Betty - 5/13/2009, 10:19 PM
not convinced that he is a good director. wait for ninja assassin before making your minds up guys! v for vendetta wasnt that good!
wards - 5/14/2009, 5:43 AM
adamant877: Sorry, but I'm going to have to counter disagree with you. I think I am being realistic, something like the holocaust would very likely be tip-toed around and glossed over. If anyone feels it being an injustice of the material being handled in that way then they (FOX and co.) will more and likely blame their intended demographic (youth and kids) for the reasons of their handling of the subject.

The optimistic point-of-view is thinking that they will treat the holocaust with the respect and seriousness it should be conveyed, however, realistically FOX and L. Donner are pussies and wouldn't risk showing graphic imagery and hurting their chance of maximizing their dollar earnings by jeopardizing any chance of flooding the theater with kids.

The best one could hope for at this point is the narrow focus of that period in time that Singer did in the opening scenes of "X-Men" where the camera focused so sharply on a young Magneto that the camera never backed out to show any real scope of the Nazi's operation. It was seen through a peep-hole.
