Josh Brolin Is Using His "Imagination" To Approach Thanos

Josh Brolin has already been wowed by the story and is now excited to fully undertake Thanos, but not without a little advice from a friend of course. Enter and read all about that.

CBR News sat down with Josh Brolin to go over a number of topics such as Hail Cesear and Jonah Hex, but they also, as expected, delved into his next foray into the world of comic book movies, with his expanded role of Thanos. They asked him numerous questions to discover how he would approach his performance, his excitement about the character, and something he's really eager to show the audience about his Thanos.

When asked about his anticipaction and excitement for the character, Brolin said, "I'm very excited that I'm doing it, and I'm not just saying that ... I think it was a very good decision on my part. I know that I've shied away from bigger-type movies, a few of them [in the past] ... Whereas when this came along, I said, 'Absolutely.' There's just something I love about what they're doing, and I'm really, really pleased that I get to play this part." Brolin went on to explain that he had spoken with his "long time friend" Mark Ruffalo for advice, "I just said, what do I have to look forward to? And he said, 'man, the first time I did ... Hulk, was really embarrassing because I'm out there and I'm like on cinder blocks and shit trying to act out this stuff for other people. And then I saw the movie, and ... I'm so blown away that I couldn't actually wait to get back there and to do all that stuff again that I found embarrassing in the beginning.' He says, 'You're going to have a blast'"

He was then asked about how he would approach the acting style for the character since it is performance capture. "It's your imagination.  When I'm on a set, there's such a balance between, are you method-ly doing your research and getting into it and all that? And I said, yeah, but there's so much imagination involved anyway. I think the difference with this, and I'm glad that I've had a couple of experiences going in front of 36 cameras and doing mo-cap and all that, it was really unnerving for me in the beginning. So I've had those experiences, I know what to expect a little bit more. Then, you just come in prepared, and you come in like anything else. You come in as, just the whole idea of coming in as Thanos, period, [just] sitting down and saying, 'What do you want me to do?' I'm ready. It's fun. The thought of it is fun. It makes me nervous, but it's fun."

Finally, the interviewer asked him what he's most excited to see play out for Thanos in the films and Brolin said, " where's the humanity? There's parts of him that are unfounded to me, which will be found. That's all I'll say."

This isn't the first time we're heard someone involved discuss Thanos' "humanity" playing a role in the film, as, writers, Markus and McFeely discussed the notion of bringing humanity to Thanos a few weeks ago. This begs the question, could Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1, or whatever it will be called now, attempt to translate a version of Thanos Rising to try and show the 'humanity' in Thanos? Not sure if anyone has said this yet but i HOPE they don't kill Thanos off. He still can be an impact in Phase 4, be involve with the Annilation Arc if they ever get to do it. Or maybe if they get the rights to Galactus. Heres for hoping!

@InfinityWar2019 - Yeah, hopefully Zemo is an indication that Marvel is going to stop killing off their villains after they're defeated. It would be a serious waste of Thanos and Brolin if they actually kill him off.

Now that was an interesting read. It's going to be insane seeing the Avengers and so much more trying to take on Thanos. Hopefully after he gets the Infinity Gauntlet, we'll see him absolutely crush anyone standing in his path.

@DeusExSponge - I hope the collective Avengers Team (The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Netflix Defender, ect....) get crushed half way though Infinity War part 2 and the final battle in the final act is Thanos with the completed Gauntlet versus the cosmic entities.

I don't know I feel like he should read some comics and stick to the mythology, PLEASE DON'T HUMANIZE YET ANOTHER VILLAIN!

He has to be the ultimate CBM villain. For me, Ledgers Joker stands out, i'm hoping Brolin outdoes him.

Nice! I really hope Thanos is done well. He's been built up as the ultimate threat for the Avengers for over four years now (six years by the time IW Part 1 comes out). He needs to be intimidating and arrogant, but also sympathetic and somewhat relatable. I hope the Russos spend a good chunk of IW Part 1 establishing his character, since he'll be absent from Guardians Vol 2.
