Disney Purchases the rights to Phase One Home Video Distribution

Today Disney has taken hold of the rights to distribute almost every film in Marvels cinematic Phase One.

Disney, what don't they own these days. Today they made that statement a little more lifelike. While they already have The Avengers, today Walt Disney Studios announced that it now holds the rights to distribute Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and my personal favorite Captain America The First Avenger.

Paramount Home Media Distribution who has distributed these films since they hit blank media will keep doing so until the last day of August of this year. No one has shared just how high of a price tag was on this exchange but my guess is we will find out soon. Marvel movies have sold very well in every format from Blu-ray to digital download, and i don't see Paramount letting go without a nice payday.

Disney as of today has taken over promotion for the titles, so expect to see some new media for the named phase one flicks, especially with Iron Man 3 hitting the usual home release formats on September 24th, which will also be distributed by Disney. Could we see new extras with the Disney releases of these movies?

No word on The Incredible Hulk while it still sits with Universal. Will Disney make an offer and complete the set? Will we see another Phase One box set in the near future? What do you guys think?

Everything should go back to Marvel. Spiderman & X-Men should go back. Joss Whedon is going to put up a good fight with Fox over Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch.

Effing Great! So as soon as the contract runs out they wont be available on Netflix any longer and will spend most of their time in Disney's vaults like the rest of their holdings, seeing rerelease once every 20 years or so then back in the vaults again. yay.

Actually Niknik, the avengers is now on Netflix. So I don't think that'll happen.

I will say I hope this leads to the original iron man getting a DVD blu ray combo pack with digital copy as it's the ONLY Marvel Movieverse film that I don't own digitally.

Disney only puts their classics "in the vault" and besides this day and age that really doesn't mean anything, you can get anything on the Internet. The vault works for the classics because if you wanna purchase them there is only one release and not ten different editions to pick from like batman is doing right now lol.

@Telavizon:
There isn't a digital copy yet for Iron Man 1. Sure you can illegally download it or buy it off of iTunes but as of now there isn't any that comes with the DVD. Believe it or not I don't own the original iron man yet as I'm waiting for that digital copy thing to happen.

@mech, there are many programs and freeware programs that can transfer or convert the DVD or blu ray to digital media.

People joke about this but when you eventually have a monopoly they get to pretty much make all the decisions and I'm not sure we as consumers would like that if we follow that to its logical conclusion 'cause then they can just treat us like shit and noone would stand up to them, since they have billions at their disposal to drag you to court and ruin your reputation if you ever really want to even the playing field. And they will obviously try to stomp out potential competitors through lobbying. CISPA/SOPA, etc. have all been pretty much supported by all major film companies so when Disney starts buying everything forgive me if I don't jump with joy.

@jessepostal: Ehh... I try doing digital copies legally, no offense. What you mentioned isn't really my particular cup of tea.

@mech, its totally legal, if you own the media. If you purchase the dvd or blu ray and want to make a backup copy to transfer to your ipad or what have you, doing so is perfectly legal.

I would definitely double dip if Disney added the deleted scenes back into Thor. They made the film much better. If they get Incredible Hulk too, they should extend that one as well.
