Over at Screenrant, Kofi Outlaw had the chance to sit down one-on-one with President of Production Kevin Fiege during the press junket for Thor: The Dark World. He had the chance to ask Kevin Fiege exactly what was going on with the Marvel Cinematic Universes Phases overall, and what they had planned for the Infinity Gauntlet, and Thanos. Kofi had revealed some of this information already, but more importantly did not reveal what is about to be shown below, due in part to Thor: The Dark World not being released over-seas (at the time), but now that it has been released, the cat is being let out of the bag.
It has been speculated that Thanos will play a major role in The Avengers 3, and that his overall goal was to use the power of the Infinity Gauntlet to rule the Universe.
MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW, SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RUIN THE MID-CREDITS SCENE FOR YOURSELF, LOOK AWAY NOW.

Before I get to that, I wanted to note what exactly happened in Thor: The Dark World's mid-credits scene.
In the mid-credits scene of Thor: The Dark World, Sif and Volstagg bring the "Aether" to the intergalactic museum of The Collector. He utters the phrase "One down, five to go", speaking of the Infinity Stones, and that the Tersseract was kept on Asgard for a reason.
In the following statement by Kevin Fiege, not only does he (kind of) confirm that, but, also reveals something very, very interesting..
Kevin Feige: I don’t know that I would spell it out that clearly, necessarily, but certainly fans of the comics could surmise that all of this is leading somewhere. That Joss’ decision to have Thanos turn around and smile to the audience at the end of ‘Avengers’ – it was always the plan to show that the tesseract was indeed an infinity stone, as was the Aether. A lot of that will tie first into ‘Guardians of The Galaxy’ which comes out next year and then where it goes from there we’ll see… I would not necessarily attribute them based on colors, because you’re close but you’re not 100% right on what each one is. …[but] yes, the MacGuffin of ‘Guardians’ certainly plays into MacGuffins from the past.
He also notes that we won't see the ramifications of the reveal of the stones until further down the pipeline in the MCU (presumably Phase III) with films like Doctor Strange and The Inhumans justifying their "mystical" powers, in statement saying:
Kevin Feige: Well, we’ll see it won’t be until probably sometime next year before we announce the 2016 movies and the 2017 movies and a lot of that will depend on the reception to the next batch of movies. What we’re actively working on is Thor’s next appearance in ‘Age of Ultron’ – where he goes beyond that we have a lot of ideas. You’re right that where we leave the characters in this movie sort of hints what could happen in the future but we’ll see where that goes after ‘Avengers 2.’
There you have it, folks. It seems as though, the Tesseract is one of the six Infinity STONES (as opposed to being Infinity GEMS in the comics).
