Rationale as to Why Loki's Army is not Thanos’s Army and My Theory on Who The Mysterious Aliens Are

I share my theory as to who the alien horde is while speculation continues until the aliens in The Avengers are finally revealed and why I think some other theories regarding Thanos being Loki’s benefactor are incorrect.

There are many theories of whose army Loki has under his command. These include various alien races such as the Badoon, Phalanx and Knights of Wundergore. However, one of the most prevalent and common theories regards Thanos. These theories then go on to conjecture that Loki promises to give Thanos the Cosmic Cube in return for Thanos lending him his army.

What seems completely bizarre to me is once Loki gets the Cube why would he give it to Thanos despite whatever supposed deal many people think the two have with each other? In addition, Thanos is no dope and he has to realise that not only will Loki betray him but also that Loki will never give him the Cosmic Cube. Why would Loki even think about sharing or giving such power to Thanos? If you were Loki and you have the Cube in your possession would you go to Thanos and say: “Thanks for the army, man, here is the Cosmic Cube I promised you”.

Loki must realize the power of the Cube and he would be insane to give it to Thanos because he is smart enough to understand the implications of such power in the hands of the Mad Titan. I cannot even begin to imagine a scenario where the two come together to make the deal with both of them acutely aware that the other is not to be trusted. It is ludicrous. Loki wants control and he wants to rule – something that was denied to him in Asgard. He is one individual, and as far as I can see he has no cronies or allies (not including the army). Remember, Thor always had backup in the form of the Warriors 3. Loki does not. No one trusts him. He has no friends. He knows that once he takes control, in order to keep it, he is going to have to make sure he has some sort of weapon or tool to keep it - a weapon such as the Cosmic Cube. Or better yet, the Infinity Gauntlet. Loki would never dream of giving the Cube to Thanos, therefore why would he even begin to promise Thanos the Infinity Gauntlet. What does Loki think is going to happen when he doesn’t hand over the Cube to Thanos? Loki would have to be beyond arrogant and over confident to think that he could get away with promising Thanos the Cube and then betraying him. And over confidence is hardly a good thing.

The Universe is vast and some may think that Thanos and his army would utilize ships to get to Earth. The problem with this is the time and energy required to make send an armada of ships across the galaxy. Using a portal to do so is a far more logical and direct approach. However, Thanos in any conquest of a civilization, must realize that you don’t launch such an attack at one point. I know that if I was in command of an army sent to conquer another world I would certainly have a multi pronged attack from various locations. The best strategy would be to launch attacks at various military bases and cities simultaneously. As far is evident from the trailer is that only one portal is open allowing for the emergence of the invading army. One reason I can imagine for only one solitary portal is that the Cube can only open one portal at a time which is a slight disadvantage.

My theory on who the alien army is:

I was researching the Kree when I came across an image of an alien called Earthquake. Not only does he look remarkably like the aliens in the trailer but his race does connect to some of the major alien races in comics. Earthquake is part of the Shi’ar who are comprised of a variety of alien races – kind of like the Federation in Star Trek. Earthquake is/was part of a special group of bodyguards called the Imperial Guard who protect the Inhuman royal family. Although in the comics the Imperial Guard originally battled the X-Men, they have also gone against the Avengers.

(From Figure Realm)

Joss stated the following a short while ago:
"It is not the Kree or the Skrulls. Those two aliens are Marvel mainstays and have enormous backstories. They have a big life of their own that just could not be contained in a film where I already had seven movie stars."

Earthquake comes from a race within the Shi’ar collection which does not have any history or back-story at all. In fact, the race and planet from which he comes are not ever named. This means Joss Whedon can use the race as he sees fit because he does not have to rely on any history - he can simply make it up to suit the context of the movie. Also, Joss mentioned that the race is not important. To me this implies that the race is expendable and whatever species Earthquake is from are perfectly expendable. Joss therefore can create a back-history as well as technological capabilities for this unnamed race without tinkering with the comic book continuity and invoking the ire of fans. Also, the Shi’ar fit into the grander scheme of aliens and politics in the Marvel universe. Think of it all being linked like this:

This does fit with what Joss said about the aliens already existing in the comics. This theory is just that, a theory. Please let me know what you think.

Very nice write up! I do remember the Shi'ar from X-Men, but I feel Avengers fans would be let down to not have a more Avengers-specific race as the opposing army. This does make sense though, so Whedon had room to make them how he sees fit.

Lets face it, this will be the Random Army of Loki

That's what I've been saying, Loki wouldn't get screwed like people say he will. It's the worst problem whith the "Thanos theory".

Ive read some great articles (mainly editorials) regarding Loki's army and the theory behind Earth's impending attack.

This, although cant be proven true, is easily the most thought out and well written of the lot.

Great article!

Gerrit@ Exactly. I can't imagine Loki giving up his Ace in the Hole.

Now, for ,let's say, The Avengers 3, it would be surreal to see a clash of the villains. Something like Loki, Thanos and other great manipulators of the Marvel Universe trying to outsmart each other in order to control the universe.

I won't budge. Loki's army are Thanos' people. Soon enough, you'll see. But seriously- are people so blind that they can't see that the aliens look like Thanos? Blue skin. Gold armor and faceplate.

As much as I wanna kno who they are, I have to say I'm so pleasantly surprised that Marvel has managed to keep this secret for so [frick]in long. I mean think about it? Pretty much we've all known that there is an alien army and a secret villain since the very first rumors surfaced and still no one is 100% on who they are.. Way to go Marvel.. Can't wait for this movie!

I think the aliens come from Planet Nolan and are Nolanites that have come to create havoc in an effort to stop The Avengers.

I never heard that Loki was giving the Cube to Thanos, I thought the rumor was he would give the Infinity Gauntlet OR an Infinity Gem to Thanos...but i have yet to hear he's giving him the Cube.

Fantastic write up. The only problem I have with your thought process is that Thanos and Loki are two of the absolute best strategic minds in the Marvel Universe. Thanos even more so than Loki.

I've yet to read a story involving Thanos that didn't involve him having two, three and sometimes four underlying strategies going on at the same time. He usually expects and allows for more than one double cross from his allies.

Ironman53, Lockjaw and Peter@ Thanks!

HulkbusterNYC@ I am absolutely loving the fact they have successfully managed to keep the aliens' idenity a mysterify this long is astounding.

Hawks@ Thanks and good point. And like Gerrit says, a clash of the villains could be epic.

Comix@ Lol
:)

3D@ I humbly disagree but if you turn out to be correct than I think you will have def earned the right to say "I told you so"
;)

Bane2099@ I can't wait...I keep saying to myself that this is going to be my favourite CBM and I have not seen it yet! I think I am def going to see it multiple times.

CDB@ I am not sure but I had a theory that Loki was using one the Infinity Gems (purple) to sneak past Heimdall in Thor. So possibly he could have at least one of the Infinity Gems even though the Gaunlet is apparantly safetly in Odin's vault. But then again Loki finding a way to get into Jotunheim without Heimdall knowing would be easy for him.

I've never heard about these Earthquake creatures before, but from the comparison between the two images...wow, well done on the research; seems plausible to me. (Mainly due to their physical resemblance - especially, look at the toes!) Great write-up, mate, I really like the idea, and I can see this being true as well. :)

I still think it's the BADOON but the other day I was in Target and saw an Avengers coloring book an the army was.......TROLLS from Asgard!??? By the way It's NOT the "Frost Giants" so give it up already.

Gmoney@ Thanks

Jolt17@ Thankyou for the compliment. I had never heard of Earthquake before either but the resemblance between him and the aliens is remarkable. The exact similarty with the toes could just be coincidence, but you never know. Guess we should know by April 11 or 12 after the premiere.

Admittably, the aliens do look like frost giants. The one criticism I have against that is Loki killed Laufey and then tried to destroy Jottenheim. I don't see the frost giants agreeing to help Loki after all that.

Batlizard@ It is possible.

Loudnoises@ Maybe the mystery will finally be revealed by the premiere on April 11?

I think they gotta be Frost Giants. They must be helping Loki..(also a Frost giant) to get retaliation for what THOR did in part one when ODIN saved them. Also so that means we get to see HULK demolish them!

Great idea......... BUT.... i have an issue with this. The guys in charge said that the villain would not be disappointing. I feel like if this was the villain, fans would be a tad let down. I just have a hard time seeing them going with someone low-key.

I was kinda hoping loki would give thanos the infinity guantlet in exchange for the army. Loki may not know how powerful the guantlet is with the gems, if he did it would make more sense to me that he'd just steal it out of the weapons vault in asgard in the first place.
