Jeremy Renner Calls Hawkeye Costume "Weird"

The star of Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker discusses how Hawkeye may be portrayed on the big screen!

The recent news that The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner spoke with Marvel Studios about possibly portraying Hawkeye in Thor and/or The Avengers was met with excitement by many in the fan community. In a recent interview with SuperHeroHype, Renner said that he was sold on the idea of playing Hawkeye because Clint Barton is "just a man with a high skill set," rather than a hero with extraordinary powers.

However, for those fans excited by the prospect of seeing the classic Hawkeye costume on film, prepare to be disappointed. Renner said that the film version of Hawkeye will not bare much of a resemblance to the comic book version:

"...it's going to be modernized, it's not going to be the guy with the big purple [mask], it's not going to be a guy in tights. It's going to be a guy in sunglasses and a vest. He's going to be more modernized and I'm gonna say, 'A cooler-looking version' and not the big weird costume he had on. I don't think they're going that route."

I know they're going to modernize his costume, but I hope they keep some of the elements that make the costume great, like in this fan pic:

yeah I'd prefer it if they combined both ultimate and classic Hawkeye costumes tpgether to get a cool costume...NO glasses though that sucks..he needs a mask. I don't like the idea of them going ultimate with all of these character's looks...Nick Fury is enough. We want CLASSIC!!!

@Ryden: Yeah, the bug-eye goggles on that fan pic bug me, too! Other than that, I think it's pretty solid.

I'd be happy with a combination of the regular and ultimate costumes. Something like this would be fine by me...(with a mask at least though, lol!)

226737-90853-hawkeye_super

226739-72041-hawkeye_super

THIS is a big NO for me though!

I can understand why they're reluctant to use the normal comic book version because it could end up looking a bit daft in a movie. Its a pity but Hawkeye's bright purple costume might end up looking out of place unforunately! ;(

XmutantX: I dont think its a copy of Snoreville - it'll just be like the Ultimate version in the pictures I posted above! If anything, Smallville copied that, lol! :D
XmutantX
XmutantX - 12/1/2009, 6:26 AM
yea but it was still 1st 2 film...non comic readers may see the resemblance...remember not every1 is comic geeks like us lol
I dont see y they jus cant work with the original costume...y do superhero movies nowadays hav 2 hav the character looking "cool" and "more normal"...i mean common the biggest and best superhero movies out there kept the costumes..Batman, iron man, and watchmen!...I like brents picture of hawkeye..i think that could totally work and it looks badass!

if they use the leather costume, they aren't changing anything, since he wears that in the comics. so they ARE sticking with the comics...just the ultimate comics.

so its the Ultimates version...spoony will be happy..he loved the Ultimate universe Hawkeye....good thing they are modernizing the films, the classics are good but for film they need to make them seem realistic.

*agrees with Teabag*

Anyway they could easily modernize the thing and yet keep what was cool about it.
But it's cool. No biggie. I hope the movie version captures Barton's uniquely sarcastic attitude.

However when it comes to Cap... that will be shall we say..... different.

"leather outfits" hahaha
didnt we learn anything from the x-men franchise???
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/1/2009, 6:48 AM
I hope it will have something of the classic look..but no way that big purple Wolverine head effort will translate well to screen. Also, Smallville completely ripped off Ultimate Hawkeye's look for their Green Arrow so if they go something along those lines more power to them.

Lee, if you had of just posted a pic of Ackles as Hawkeye you totally would have sold me!..ah well.

That leather looks better than spandex? That almost anything looks better than spandex?

[frick] spandex. It's not the same as Spider-man. At all. Just because it works with one suit, one hero, doesn't automatically mean it would work with another. That kind of logic is so dumb, it's king of dumb city.

Every case is unique. Some will work with very little changes, some will only work if they change the costume radically.

This debate over costume changes is sooooo tired. Do none of you actually read Marvel btw?

What is the one constant factor in all their stories, throughout their history, echoed by every writer, artist, e-i-c and executive since day one?

The guy/gal INSIDE the suit is what's important, not the duds, not the powers. Nobody outside a very tiny geek minority wants to see stupid, ridiculous looking spandex outfits (outside of something like Kick-Ass or Watchmen, where it is appropriate) when they can just as easily be updated to look like someone might actually wear them.

Really, if you were a highly skilled, trained marksman, with a history of badassery, would you wear purple tights and a masquerade ball mask?

Well, YOU might, but none of these guys would, that's for sure.

LEEE777 - 12/1/2009, 6:55 AM
RENNERS a [frick]ing HOBBIT which is already talking about [frick]ing up HAWKEYE's costume and he hasn't even got the [frick]ing job, i say... [frick] him!! : P

KeithM - 12/1/2009, 7:01 AM
Well, the reassuring thing is that if Leeeeeeee doesn't like it then it just might work.

If he liked it, then I'd really worry.

LEEE777 - 12/1/2009, 7:02 AM
QUESTION @ How is HAWKEYE going to look out of place when you've got guys like THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and HULK etc????

Lmfao, its a CBM movie!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 12/1/2009, 7:04 AM
KeithM! : p

X-MEN is not the way to go with HAWKEYE!!

HAWKEYE doesn't even wear [frick]ing SPANDEX really anyway, its more CLOTH than anything!! Well apart from the modern look.
KeithM
KeithM - 12/1/2009, 7:05 AM
So it MUST be campy as a row of tents?

I think not.

I honestly thank whatever gods there might be that smarter guys than you are in charge of this.

MarkCassidy - 12/1/2009, 7:08 AM
So what! It still has to have a certain realism inside the bounds of its established reality! Jesus, why didn't you like Shitmackers Batman movies Leee?..I mean, after all, they are all just CBM's! If Hawkeye wore a [frick]ing tutu in the comic would you want to see it on film? Yeah, that would never happen right..well he does wear purple tights and a ballroom mask as Keithm pointed out
KeithM
KeithM - 12/1/2009, 7:10 AM
Leeeeeeeee - chill. Breathe.

I've been reading comics longer than you've been alive (I really, really, really hope you are only young...), so please don't try to imply that I don't know what I'm talking about and you do, or that somehow you "love comics" more than I do, because you don't.

If you want campy kiddy fare, then I suppose you're entitled. But for the mainstream audience and those of us who love the characters and stories, evolving them for the big screen is an absolute necessity if they are to be "done right". An absolute necessity.

Think on it.

TEA @ Lol!!! : D

ROR @ Im surprised you didn't like that piece of sh1t B&R liking BORIGINS an all!! ; D

Im not that interested in the costume anyway at this point, but plumb boy up there can [frick] off being HAWKEYE, theres much better! : P
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/1/2009, 7:14 AM
Well Tea, I disagree. a costume defines a characters recognizability..thats all. Obviously their are exceptions, Superman, Spider Man, Batman..characters with secret identities and iconic looks..Hawkeye does not need that same reverence..and Im absolutely delighted he doesn't because that costume from the classic comics would look like balls on screen.
KeithM
KeithM - 12/1/2009, 7:15 AM
I guarantee if all superhero characters started off just wearing normal outfits they wouldnt be around today :)
teabag - 12/1/2009, 7:06 AM

Absolutely agree. Because in the four colour print world, people wearing everyday colours would be visually uninteresting and wouldn't jump out of the page at the reader on the newsstands...

That's fine. Even so, costumes in comics are now evolving to look just a little more practical, while retaining that colourful visual imagery which grabs the attention of the reader.

When adapting the garish four colour heroes into a cinematic medium however, changes MUST be made to prevent them looking utterly stupid.

It's not rocket science guys. Different mediums require different approaches.

Because the character was a hell of a lot more believable, interesting and three dimensional in the Ultimates?

616 Hawkeye was so dull, he was killed off. Nobody cared about him until then. He was a lame Green Arrow rip-off until Bendis killed him and the Ultimates gave us a newer, fresher, better version.

MULTI @ : D

I'm not saying, they hav'ta use the classic HAWKEYE but the modern version would look good on screen, and in a movie, he might look out of place but in THOR and AVENGERS, of course he wont look out of place lol!!

K @ ULTIMATE HAWKEYE looks lame is lame an just a copy, but apart from that he's all good! ; P
