While Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly today that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunners are “avoiding the cameo of the week,” at least one big star won’t rule out appearing on the series.

Entertainment Weekly asked Robert Downey, Jr. about the possibility of bringing Tony Stark to the small screen to reconnect with his old buddy, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson. His response?

“You know what? There’s no telling. I am open to everything.”

Certainly it seems unlikely—Downey hasn’t been on TV consistently since Ally McBeal about a decade ago. Still, with so many people focused on whether he’ll even return to the Iron Man franchise at all, it’s likely to be one of those lines that gets quoted and referred back to for a while.

Asked whether there might be room for lesser-known Marvel characters to appear on the show, Feige seemed to be pretty open to the possibility–without necessarily committing to it.

“If that works the way everyone expects it to work I think that would open up another avenue, another outlet for some of those characters,” Feige said. “Maybe they guest star, I don’t know. I think they’re avoiding the cameo of the week on that show, which is very smart.”

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968.

Just give a sweet backend deal, announce it, and get on with it!

"Certainly it seems unlikely—Downey hasn’t been on TV consistently since Ally McBeal about a decade ago."

What does that matter? No one's saying he'll be on this show consistently, just an episode or so.

I hope TONY STARK is in it. They can't afford to use the Iron Man suit. It will just look wrong.

Tony Stark and only Tony Stark. No Iron Man.

And Banner now and then.

and Cap...just, even if they're simply passing him in the halls or something. Just one shot. I don't even care if it's a standin seen from the back.

I think if you only use them in season finales then that episode kind of has to be about that guest appearance rather than the team.

I think occasionally cameos would be fantastic by Cap and Banner. Black Widow and Hawkeye could lead them on a mission or something. Maria Hill could be to see oversea operations. Nick Fury voice should be heard on the odd occasion, that'd be cool and sometimes like video communication but he very rarely makes and actual appearance.

That's what I'd hope for anyway. Also it is definitely a great way to introduce heroes like Iron First and Luke Cage and hopefully more SHIELD agents. Clay Quatermain, Jimmy Woo, G.W. Bridge. Also "The Gaffer" could be like their equivalent to Bond's "Q".

But yeah not too many cameos

Sounds like a good idea to me, I don't see why it'd be unlikely. It'd just have to be a one-episode cameo, not even a recurring character. The show is supposed to be a part of the MCU, so if they really want to expand and connect everything, then they need to have stuff like that. Every Avenger could appear on that show. Tony Stark would probably be without the Iron Man suit and if Bruce Banner appeared, it'd have to be without hulking out. I do agree that they should avoid the "cameo of the week" thing and save any Avengers guest spots for well into the show.
