After so long, and such back and forth, The Hobbit has finally gotten a greenlight, a director (Peter Jackson), and now an official start date. According to TheWrap.com.

They report that the Lord of the Rings prequel project will begin production in February, as per "an individual close to the" films.

"In the final agreement this week, Jackson's deal was finalized and MGM and Warner Bros. agreed to give the project its greenlight," says the site. Sets have already been built in New Zealand and actors have been on hold for months.

Meanwhile, The New Zealand Herald reports that the decision on whether the production will happen in New Zealand is still at least a week away "and in the hands of Warner Bros. despite a 'useful and productive' meeting today between filmmakers and Actors Equity."

This flick has been doomed from the beginning. Hopefully this will change the direction for it and it'll actually happen!

This is still unofficial. Don't believe anything until there's an official press release. How many times has the greenlit for these films been "imminent"?

thank giggitty that Jackson will be directing this, he is the only one I ever wanted to direct this, I love Del Toro but Jackson is the mastermind behind the original classic trilogy. It cant get here quick enough

ComingSoon.net contacted New Line/Warner Bros. about the reports, but the studio said the green light was not confirmed yet.

can't wait,i liked the lord of the rings trilogy a bit to much walking & hobbit love with each other.

but hopefully they sort it out & have more action & less walking & hobbit love.

any way the original star wars trilogy is better.

I always thought The Hobbit was the best story of all the Middle Earth tales. I am glad that MGM is finally going through with it. Hopefully nothing falls through again...

I too agree that The original Star Wars Trilogy is better than LOTR. Randle is right! All they do is freaking walk! haha! Even the trees walk!

hey im a star war guy through and though. always have been always will be. it's my number one sci-fi "universe" if you will. - but those 3 new movies just make me want to do what that "lord of the rings nerd" did in that video. it's getting hard to keep it so close to my heart. at least Star Trek nerds have that awesome new movie. Please GL let someone else make a star wars movie.... Peter Jackson didn't write LOTR and look how good he made it. he wasted GL as far as making an actual good film.

i cant wait for this, i [frick]ing loved the hobbit. why cant you ppl accept both? star wars and Lotr are both AMAZING trilogies (yes trilogies, there are only 3 star wars movies and i don't care what anyone else says about it) so why cant you love both equally?

@ GrayFox1025 I am looking forward to The Hobbit as well. For me personally I just enjoy Star Wars more. I like to make fun of LOTR, but the truth is I don't dislike the films. I just find it funny when people get so upset about it. Like the nerd in Clerks 2.

This is the best news I've heard all year. I've been so excited since I saw this at work today. I'm going to start camping out at the IMAX soon to get the first tickets.

Also, LOTR/SW is the same as apples and oranges. I love both, but they're too different for me to choose one over the other. If I had to choose to watch only one it would be a toss up, and if you gave me the option 10 times I'd go 5 and 5.
