THE AVENGERS Bump Boosts JOHN CARTER Numbers

The phenomenal success of The Avengers has helped Disney in more ways than one. John Carter numbers increased considerably thanks to superhero support.

Disney big budget disappointment, John Carter, received a surprising boost from an unlikely source this week. Formerly ranked number 38 at the box office, John Carter rose to number 12 thanks to a boost in ticket sales from drive-in double features.

Normally, double feature movies packaged with a blockbuster don't get this kind of support, but The Avengers massive haul helped John Carter add $1.5 million to it's total. That's 1,223 percent growth. Disney still lost some money with the Bradbury science fiction spectacle, but every little bit they can eke out will help them recoup their losses.

John Carter's totals now stand at $70.8 million domestically and $208.2 million overseas.

WHY IS THIS STILL OUT NOT LIKE IT WAS A BAD MOVIE OR ANYTHING BUT WHY?

how the hell did Disney lose money when this has made a total of almost 280 million?

i mean sure it cost 200 million to make and probably another 25 million to market, but it should have at least broken even
jerichomccune
jerichomccune - 5/8/2012, 1:19 PM
The 280 million has to be split with the theaters. Plus, marketing costs have been reported as anywhere between 80-100 million.

the theatre chains supposedly take 50% of the earnings so JC ($250mil budget + $100mil [frick]-awful marketing) needed to be in the $700mil range to 'break even'. I personally really enjoyed it but I think it will eventually find its audience on DVD/BR, its sorta like the modern day Dune

I still don't get how this movie lost money at all...it was actually pretty decent. Maybe releasing an expensive blockbuster in March wasn't the smartest idea....I don't know if that's even been done before

"Bradbury science fiction spectacle"
John Carter was created by Edgar Rice Burrough, not Ray Bradbury.

Anyway, it still bombed.

didn't even make an attempt to see it. i've always found kitsch's acting to be very flat and dry and the trailors did nothing to prove anything different to me. i don't know; i just never got very excited for this film. there was nothing there that really drew me in and said, "you HAVE to see this movie!"

They say a film should make 3 times its budget to be considered successful, John Carter didn't do that.

Nice that Disney is taking advantage of Paramount.

I saw it in a double bill with Killer Elite, wasn't a bad movie but with such a high budget I expected more. And yeah it had a $100 million marketing budget, which was actually quite bad. The trailers turned me off from seeing it and when I was watching the film I kept wondering why they didn't higlight these awesome moments.

But anyway, AVENGERS!

This movie was actually pretty damn good. But Disney should have kept the budget closer to $150 million. The source material was not well known by the general public. I draw parallels to how the Speed Racer movie performed, althought that movie was nowhere near as good as John Carter. And it's generally considered that for a movie to be profitable it needs to make twice the production and marketing budget. Not 3 times. With Bluray and dvd sales this movie could break even. Or eke out a tiny profit. I wouldn't rule out JC2 with a more reasonable budget. Andrew Stanton already has the trilogy mapped out.

@cherry bomb its very rare for a movie to make 3 times its budget back......

Our family loved John Carter. we paid to see it twice. I waited nearly 30 years to see this movie. My husband, our 10 year old daughter and 7 year old son loved it as well (the 2 year old clapped a few times). I'm really glad to see it's still gathering fans. We weren't planning on watching Avenger in the theater, but if I can find a double feature around here, we might catch it.

The problem was the lack of proper marketing. I almost missed it, thinking it was still opening in June.

A good rule of thumb is that a movie needs to double it's budget to break even. That figure would include the marketing budget as well as the theaters' take.

As for John Carter, it is a good movie, could've been better. And it's Burroughs, not Bradbury :)

John Carter was a good flick. Sucks that it wasn't a bigger draw, but some of the marketing was kind of weak.

John carter was a great film , its was so sad to see the film not do as well as I hoped . Honestly I think it came down to marketing

Plus the title change from " john carter of mars " to just " John carter " didn't help . But really who knows
Ceejay

John Carter has made more money internationally than reported, nearly all the main box office tracking sites don't include the Chinese box office where it has made over $41 million. Barely gonna make a difference to the fact that it's flopped due to Disneys awful marketing and rebranding of the title leaving audiences clueless to what its about.

How you can have an actress as hot as how Lynn Collins looks in the movie and NOT use her as a selling point in any of the posters is beyond me!
