Why The SANDMAN Movie Was Not On WB's Superhero Movie Schedule

Recently, WB announced plans & release dates for films featuring Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Shazam & The Justice League. However, not included on that list was the Sandman movie that's currently being developed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Here's why according to Neil Gaiman.

Warner Bros. recently announced 10 other DC Comics superhero films to accompany Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on the film studios' superhero slate.  However, left off that list was the Sandman movie, which is currently being scripted by Levitt, Gaiman, Goyer and screenwriter Jack Thorne.  According to Sandman creator Neil Gaiman, here's why---

"[Sandman's] not a DC Comics film. It’s a Vertigo film. That’s a different slate of films, and a different announcement."

Fitting, considering that the Vertigo comic series has a long history of flirting with whether or not it actually takes place within DC proper. I'd also point to the fact that Gaiman seems to be implying that there's a "SLATE" of Vertigo films coming down the pipeline as well.  Also not on WB's list were the Justice League Dark movie from Guillermo del Toro and the purported Legion of Superheroes movie.  The roster of Justice League Dark is comprised of both mainstream DC characters and Vertigo properties, meaning that the film could fall on either side of the DC/Vertigo fence.  As for the Legion of Superheroes movie, it appears to be in the very early stages of development according to Latino Review so it's probably too early to tell whether that project will actually move forward or not.

I can't wait for all the complainers saying "Ugh! Why aren't they in the same continuity!" even though these guys were never intended to be even in the main DC comics continuity and work better in their own Vertigo universes.

Also we could still have Justice League Dark, but probably with a different title and not with DCU.

Was very surprised by his directing chops in Don Jon.

This is exactly what I said. JLD will probably be in the Vertigoverse as well, I doubt Legion of Superheroes will be made though but I think the recently announced DC movies are all the JL-related ones and that Shazam will be part of it.

@WB/DC/Vertigo

Grant these fanboy wishes and don't make an Unknown Soldier film until I graduate film school and can direct it myself. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE

WB has said that they're keen on making Fables. They also included Doom Patrol in that list.

I thought that was the reason all along. Now I look forward to hearing news on Vertigo titles, like Fables, Sandman, Y: The Last Man & 100 Bullets being announced. I just hope Justice League Dark will be a DC movie instead of a Vertigo one.

at this point, dc is trying waaaaaaayyyyyyy to hard beat marvel. I mean get the fact that they have announced their film slate till 2020 which I like for the most part, but bringing vertigo films as well, now that's too much. I just hope that cbms don't get saturated to the point people won't care anymore

Since Vertigo and DC often do crossovers, WB will still have that open opportunity in the future to merge them together if they choose to... not mad at this news! :)

Y: the last man halted production which is sad. Brian Vaughn is one of my favs. SANDMAN IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SERIES. This movie shouldn't be in the "super heroe" realm. Interested to see how they make that storyline into a screenplay.

@Brainiac13

I recommend you pick it up! The Garth Ennis run is a 4 issue miniseries and it's full of conspiracy and some great late 90's era artwork. It's definitely in my top 10 comics and I read it at least once every year.

If you like it enough then check out the run by Joshua Dysart. It's pretty recent stuff and is even more of a mind trip. The series is absolutely brutal to read though considering the subject matter, it's to be suspected.

Sandman isn't a superhero story.

There's a good chance they are still in development (not development hell). This is good news.
