Marvel Senior VP Jeremy Latcham On The Fluidity Of The AVENGERS Roster

Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron producer Jeremy Latcham on how Marvel Studios will match the comic books in terms of changing the roster of Avengers team members. "There's a continually changing roster."

Comic book readers will know that from its initial inception in 1963, Marvel has always tinkered with the Avengers line-up.  Members come and go and then rejoin due to various reasons and circumstances.  According to Avengers producer and Marvel Sr. VP Jeremy Latcham, that's something the Marvel films will match.

Speaking to IGN, Latcham stated, "'The Avengers' roster is always changing, and that's part of the fun of the comics. It's one of the promises that we want to play with in this film, that there are always going to be new characters [joining] the team and old characters leaving the team. There's a continually changing roster. That's something we definitely play with in this film, and you might get to see cameos of War Machine or other people. I mean, we want to make this world as lively as possible, and we've set people up in the universe. They exist. We want to deal with that where we can."

It should come as no surprise that heading towards Captain America: Civil War, there will be a shakeup of the Avengers roster.  Still, it's nice to have confirmation that Marvel Studios is not afraid to embrace such an important aspect of Avengers lore.  While some fans will naturally be disappointed if their favorite character is left off the team in future installments, it's encouraging to hear that there's potentially a chance for characters like Daredevil, Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Mockingbird Skye and/or Falcon to join the Avengers at some point.

I don't know... I always want Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk, I guess everyone else can remain fluid.

Nice, that rocks, right on. It's good to switch things up and focus on different characters and dynamics

Fluid roster keeps things fresh. RDJ can't play Iron Man forever.

I think Phase 4 could possibly be when we get a Hulk solo film, so chances are he will be one of the main remaining Avengers.

Captain America can be replaced by either Bucky, Falcon, or even Daredevil while ironmans comedic role can be taken by spiderman the only hard ones to replace would be hulk and Thor due to the fact they are the two most powerful avengers maybe dr strange could take thors place and Luke cage hulks? Just an idea

There's going to be some turmoil to the Avengers ranks at the end of Civil War too since Chris Evans contract is nearly complete. He has one more movie on his contract -like Chris Hemsworth and RDJ. So the last movie for all of three is probably Infinity War Part 2. I wonder if Winter Soldier takes up being Captain America through the rest of Phase 3 into Phase 4 since Sebastian Stan has 6 movies left on his contract after Civil War.

If it's true to who dies, who joins, and those who leave at the end of AOU, the Avengers roster could remain at 6 members. People who've already known seen the movie know that answer. We have Ant-Man, possibly Wasp, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, (new?) Captain America, Doctor Strange? -all joining sometime during Phase 3. So there is going to be a new team to come at the end of Infinity War Part 2. I'm guessing that most of the Phase 1 actors will be done. Everyone except Mark Ruffalo will have completed their Marvel contracts. I'm only seeing 6 tp 8 Avengers making up the 3rd set of Avengers at the end of IW2.

Feige is clearly manuevering story around actors contracts and who stays an Avenger. One reason why a rumored character might die in AOU is probably due to reserving that character for a later story and keeping the Avengers roster to a managable size. I believe 6 characters is the desired number they want as Avengers. All the add-on's during Phase 3 won't be together until the Infinity War Part 1. The Russo Brothers have their work cut out for them with so many new and former Avengers in that story as well as giving a swan song to most of the Phase 1 actors.

Phase 4 Avengers: Spiderman, Black Panther, Dr Strange, Captain Marvel, Vision, Bucky Cap

Bucky Cap will serve as the Inspirational leader following in Caps footsteps
Black Panther will be the resident genius and tactician
Spiderman will be the moral compass and comic relief
Dr. Strange will be there but separate and give the team info from the spiritual realm
Captain Marvel will serve as the powerhouse and alien ambassador
Vision will be the tech expert and the analytical voice

As long as they have a leader (Captain America, IronMan) and Brute Strength (Hulk Thor) The rest can be intertwined depending on the adventue. I'm glad WM & Falcon will at least have a cameo in AOU. Hopefully we get to see some fightin between them.

For Phase four they could have Venom as the Avengers villain. They could do something similar to what happened in the Web of Shadows video game but on a greater level.

Ramiel- odds are they will be the ones to warn the avengers, i imagine them teaming up with the new avengers in part 1 and then they get their asses kicked and they team up then with the original members and whoever is left of the new members.

Infinity War part 1 roster will probably include Spidey, Daredevil, Bucky, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Vision, and maybe the twins.

Infinity War part 2 will see the return of Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Widow, and Hulk.

Where GOTG fits in is anyone's guess.

@ThePowerCosmic

Love to see Kang the Conqueror. I like the idea of the Avengers assembled and getting handled by a single foe. A more interesting dynamic than a disposable army being handled by the Avengers.

Loved Kang in EMH.

Don't think Bucky should lead the Avengers. I like what he said, that he has the military experience but not the Avengers experience. He'd be looked upon as dangerous should such a film happen anyway.

I'm fine with Spidey on the team, but no to Daredevil or Doctor Strange. The problem with after Infinity War is whether they'll go bigger or smaller with the team. New Avengers is likely, but by that point who knows whether Marvel is confident to crossover TV heroes (Cage, Iron Fist, etc.) because most of them make up that group. I never liked the New Avengers roster at the beginning of DR. Too big, both in character and strength. That's why I'd hope those guys will be in the films at that point, but that's up to Marvel.

@theEpicJuicebox: That's not a bad idea but I hope they keep Luke Cage with the Defenders. Now that Joss is leaving we might get to see WonderMan on the roster. Power wise he could easily replace Hulk or Thor!

I met Jeremy Latcham a few years back at my church. One of my friend's fathers heard about a sort of fan script I had been working on for a Marvel project. So he introduced me to Jeremy one Christmas Eve at our church service. Introductions only lasted for a few minutes. I doubt anything ever could have come out of that possibility, but I still feel some regret and wonder whenever this guys' name gets brought up on this site.

I do think they'll try to make something happen, and after the success of DD I'm hopeful. It's just with every other hero being included from the films already-- more than what Whedon struggled with for AoU, I'm a tad worried they won't have the time or space to finalise anything.
