AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR To Shine Spotlight On 'Secondary' Avengers

"I think it's interesting that if you've seen four or five movies with the lead character having an arc, I want to see some story telling from some of the secondary characters...who potentially haven't had their own 'A' story arc...supporting Avengers are going to become primary Avengers."

The Russos were actually at several panels for Wizard World New Orleans so expect more news from the fan expo to make its way online in the coming days. In one of their smaller panels, the Russo touched on their desire to shine the spotlight on Avengers members in Infinity War who have yet to receive their own "A story arc". If true, it's likely that Infinity War won't be told through the eyes of any of The Avengers who have received their own standalone movie.  Here's what Joe Russo stated.

"Everything is finite, right? Nothing can last forever.  It's cyclical. Some New Avengers in phase 4 are going to become prominent and then maybe some Avengers might not be around anymore. So, we'll see how all this plays out but you have to treat every character with respect. I think it's interesting that if you've seen four or five movies with the lead character having an arc, I want to see some story telling from some of the secondary characters. We're focusing on that right now with Infinity War while we're breaking into those movies, [asking] which characters can we pull to the forefront who potentially haven't had their own 'A' story arc to this point. I think you'll see that the supporting Avengers are going to become primary Avengers."

In analyzing Joe Russo's comments, that would seem to rule out characters like Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch).  By the time Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 is released on May 04, 2018, we'll also have seen solo films from Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland).  In looking at the existing roster of Avengers, that would leave Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Vision (Paul Bettany) as strong candidates to have the spotlight shined on them in Infinity War.  It's also possible that the focus could be on Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner)  and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) though it's arguable that these three have already received "A story arcs".  Consideration also has to be given to new characters that could be introduced.  There's a solo Captain Marvel film slated for release on March 8, 2019 but it's possible that the character could first be introduced in Infinity War, similar to how Spider-Man is being introduced in Captain America: Civil War.

I do not envy the Russo's task in making this movie. At least all of the principals are locked down contractually...I would think.

Sounds like some contracts are almost up.....so this is a good way to deal with that issue (if it is an issue).

Sounds good to me. I want to know if the Inhumans will be in IW, as well as the Defenders.

Also, I really hope the Avengers have to fight a group like the Black Order, I'm not keen on them facing another army of cannon fodder. Actually a mixture of the 2 would be ideal.

I guess if is a replacement it would be temporary I can't see the big tree cap iron man Thor being left out of the whole infinity story line for long. Looking forward to see how they handle capt marvel going forward. With the team

While I like the idea of giving secondary characters heir due, I really don't want it to be at the expense of the big four (Cap, Thor, Iron Man and Hulk). I really want the scene of Cap standing there face to face with Thanos. Also, Thor and Hulk taking it to Thanos would be epic! Hopefully contracts and money don't end up being the villains the Avengers can't defeat.

My questions is after they kill off Steve Rodgers, does Bucky take up the Cap mantle or just stay Winter Soldier.

point being Cap would still be an avenger just not the Steve Rodgers version.

Funny thing is I think they said this after the Russo's asked Renner what Hawkeye was up to in Civil War for the audience, because I think they gravitate more towards characters like Hawkeye(he's more tangible and his smart ass, immature, lone wolf non-chalant, dick head personality is just awesome) so I hope this means more development for characters like Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and obviously Vision will get more to do, but mainly Hawkeye I feel is the character they want to give a great arc to in Infinity War, because he is going to be the most vulnerable in Infinity War, so the audience would expect him to croak, which makes the perfect opportunity to inject some heart into the character, and really put the spotlight on him(people won't expect it). That's just how I feel at least. But yeah, a hell yes to focus on side characters much more than the main stays.

I hope that Captain Marvel isn't a fully formed hero in Infinity War Part 1 and we just get Carol Danvers in that movie. She could be attached to the movie as Rhodey's Air Force assistant or his replacement (if he doesn't survive Civil War). Save her transformation, and Mar-Vell, for her solo movie between IW Part 1 & 2. She could regroup the Avengers for Part 2.

Nick Fury will probably die. Marvel seems to be saving the final 2 movies on Jackson's contract for Infinity War. Iron Man will probably sacrifice himself to complete his overall Phase 1-3 arc. Thor will probably leave earth to remain in Asgard. Captain America will probably retire and hand his shield to Bucky, if he hasn't already by CW. Sebastian Stan will still have 4 films left on his contract after Infinity War so Marvel could continue doing Cap films going into Phase 4.

The future is going to be interesting for the MCU post Infinity War as Marvel transitions from primarily punch-kick heroes to super-powered heroes like Inhumans, Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange. Still hoping that Namor gets introduced in Black Panther 2 during Phase 4 so they can start telling that rivalry. Also, hoping that Marvel branches out to do films on Alpha Flight or New Warriors as Disney trademarked those names back in 2013.

I just don't see the second string Avengers being able to carry their own movies. Capt. America and Iron Man have done extremely well but will people have the same enthusiasm for Winter Soldier or War Machine? I don't think so primarily because the actors attached to IM and CA are so good in their roles.

Although it's unlikely, it would be great if Marvel was able to get the rights to Fantastic Four back as the anchor of Phase 4. I wouldn't mind seeing the current MCU erased at the end of IW with the exception of the Phase 3 solo movie characters. Black Panther and the FF have a such a history.

It's also possible that in 4 years, the CBM genre will be on its last legs anyway. Who knows?

It's definitely time for Rhodey to step up and grab the spotlight. I think Widow's sell-by date has passed. Scarlet Witch is going to take her place as the alpha femme fatale.

Valkyrie(one of my favorite female characters) could also be in Infinity Wars because she IS an Avengers, and I'm 95% sure she is going to be introduced in Thor: Ragnarok, and considering Marvel is really pushing the female talent in Ragnarok, then her character might be a fan favorite. That's sort of what I'm hoping for. What other side characters are there. Ant Man doesn't really qualify because he was an instant fan favorite and has his own franchise along with the Wasp now. Vision was also an instant fan favorite. Black Widow has had many appearances and several arcs now. The side characters who need development keep coming back to Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye. Perhaps quicksilver if he comes back. Maybe more Hulk because he is becoming a side character at this point. But will characters like Doctor Strange, Cap Marvel, Panther, be considered side characters even though they have their own franchise(though only one movie of their own)? I don't know, but either way I'm really glad they said this, I can't wait to see what they do with the underdogs of the MCU. ouu, War Machine is also another side character they can pump up.
