Here's how Cobie's original quote read:
"...And she has superpowers and is hyperintelligent; a very nice, fine woman who has all the answers."
And this is how Vulture revised that quote after they saw the e-storm that it created:
[My costumes are] very sleek, and very leather. And if she had a superpower it would be that she is hyperintelligent; a very nice, fine woman who has all the answers.
Said Vulture on the change,
*This quote has been updated to show that Smulders didn't mean to suggest that her Avengers character has superpowers.
Having done a few interviews myself, I can personally attest to the fact that it's a big difference between writing down exactly what you hear versus editing the conversation to denote what's actually being intended. Actually listening to someone speak and only reading their words can create two, very distinct interpretations. I had a feeling when I read that interview, Cobie's words were being taken out of context, so its good of them to go back and clarify.
Maria Hill is a fictional character of the Marvel Universe. She was the former director of the planetary defense/intelligence service S.H.I.E.L.D. Cobie Smulders will play Maria Hill in the upcoming live-action film The Avengers.
The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which crosses over several Marvel superhero films including Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to save the world from destruction.
Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man in May 2008, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio and New York City. The film entered post-production at the conclusion of filming in September 2011.
The Avengers is scheduled for release on May 4, 2012 in the United States.
