Emily Blunt On Why She Turned Down The Role Of BLACK WIDOW In IRON MAN 2

Emily Blunt was Marvel's first choice for Black Widow and then Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger. Here's why that didn't happen according to the actress herself.

Emily BLunt Black Widow Avengers

Speaking to New York Magazine, actress Emily Blunt briefly responded to a question about her decision to turn down roles in both Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The First Avenger:

NYM: At one point, you were up for parts in Iron Man 2 and Captain America, but you passed. Would you ever want to do a superhero movie?

EMILY BLUNT: "Usually the female parts in a superhero film feel thankless: She's the pill girlfriend while the guys are whizzing around saving the world. I didn't do the other ones because the part wasn't very good or the timing wasn't right, but I'm open to any kind of genre if the part is great and fun and different and a challenge in some way. I would love to do a comic-book movie or a science-fiction film that would scare the bejesus out of me. Maybe I need to be James Bond! I just did Looper, because it's so original and breathtakingly cool. The time-travel aspect is just a backdrop to visit this heightened world, where you're atoning for something and attempting to be more than you've been."

As you all know, the roles that Emily were originally up for went to Scarlett Johanson and Hayley Atwell respectively. Obviously, Marvel was [or possibly still is] enamored with her as they approached her for female leads in two of their biggest pictures and it will be interesting to see if they approach her again for future projects. Can you imagine Blunt on the Avengers poster in Black Widow's skin tight outfit instead of Johansson?

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to save the world from destruction.

Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man in May 2008, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in August 2011 and New York City in September 2011. The film was converted to 3D in post-production.

The Avengers is scheduled for release on May 4, 2012 in the United States in 2D and 3D.

Emily Blunt is an amazing, beautiful actress. She would've made an awesome Black Widow and they chose to replace her with an actress who can't act and doesn't really look very 'foreign' looking at all.

Emily has amazing cheekbones and pale skin that just screams Russian spy. She's also a lot taller and more slender looking than Scarlett. Which is an even better reason why Black Widow was rightfully Blunt's.

But oh well! she'll be in a comic movie one day and she'll be amazing.

If Krasinski had been Cap'n America she would have taken the role.

yeah I find her to a fine actress...but, when she whines about poor female roles but thinks it's brilliant to be in "The Wolfman" and "Guillver's Travels" AND "Charlie Wilson's War".........meh, she's not the best quality judge.

I enjoy the way Marvel does do more than have women simply scream and run around......ok other than Pepper in the limo in IM2.

@P862010 hit it on the nose! Both ScarJo & Atwell look better for their roles than Blunt would of. Marvel made the right second choices. I would've liked if ScarJo tried the Russian accent though.

Scarlett kind of lost her hotness when she lost her boobs and married Ryan Reynolds. Blunt would've been much better, had she not been contracted to be in that godawful Jack Black, Gulliver's Travels movie.

Emily is GORGEOUS!
I have always been a fan of hers...Out of all of the actresses to try out, ScrJo got the role?
Emily Blunt
Eliza Dushku
and Elena Satine.

Eliza can kick ass, Elena is russian, and can do the accent, she would just need to be trained!

Elena Satine was my personal favorite...She is 24, but looks a hell of a lot older!
She would have been MUCH better than Scarlett.

SHE IS FROM GEORGIA (The former USSR)....She can do the accent, shich she did in NCIS....I wish they would have given her the chance.
She deserves a great role as such.

almost anyone would have been a better choice to be Black Widow than Scarlet. all she is is tits in spandex with no acting ability.

Blunt would have been an awesome Widow, and probably would have been a good Peggy Carter, but I can't see anyone else but Hayley Atwell in that part now.

She's an okay actress. Neither demonstrably better nor worse than Johanssen. I'm glad she turned down "CATFA" (if she did, indeed, turn it down; I've heard Alice Eve was also up for "Peggy Carter" in that movie before Hayley Atwell got the role, and that was before the fact, not after the fact like this story), because Atwell was so strong as Peggy Carter.

I say they cast her as "Clea" when they make the "Dr. Strange" movie.

Blunt's not my choice for Black Widow, but I would've been ok with her than that skank Scarjo anythime if it was only just those two. And wasn't Hillary Swank their first choice for BW when the first Iron Man was being filmed? I would've been ok with her too. It's a damn crime Milla Jovovich wasn't even considered for the role. She freakin' looks like her for crying out lond, can do a Russian accent and has killer fighting moves.

God, Scarjo? Really?
