Joss Whedon On The CAPTAIN AMERICA / IRON MAN Scene That Was Cut From THE AVENGERS

Joss Whedon discusses a scene that was ultimately pulled from the final edit of The Avengers which focused on the relationship between Steve Rogers, Tony Stark and his father, Howard Stark.

QUESTION: As for CAPTAIN AMERICA, that film, with Stark’s father and his admiration for Steve Rogers… there’s an interesting potential for conflict there with Tony and Howard Stark’s hero worship of Cap. Was there ever anything more about that resentment?

Joss Whedon: There was a ton more. One of the problems we had early on was that I had way more Iron Man, and at some point I realized “This is turning into IRON MAN 3. That’s a mistake for them, that’s a mistake for me, and it’s putting too much responsibility on Robert’s shoulders. He needs to be the rock star who shows up and says ‘Oh, let me handle this, because I’m a rock star.’” That felt very right. But I had written endless scads of pages of him and Steve Rogers arguing, and a lot of it was about [Howard Stark]. Not so much, because his daddy issues had been the thing in the second movie, but enough because of that relationship. Actually the only time Chris and Robert were in the Quinjet, I had a little run about the father, and on the day they were like “We’re not so comfortable with this.” I went “Okay, let’s pull it,” so there’s really just the one comment. But I feel like you don’t necessarily need to say it. It’s there. I mean, Chris is such a father figure as Steve Rogers - even though he’s young and maybe just by virtue of the fact that he is a beautiful fuddy-duddy. Their relationship I think resonates without having to call it back too much. And when he says “And every time I would think ‘You know, your father would never say that’”, I wanted Tony to say “My Dominic Cooper father or my John Slattery father? Because they were very different guys.”

Interesting. Maybe that scene ends up on the Director's Cut Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack? The relationship between Cap and Tony Stark's father was an angle I was looking forward to seeing in The Avengers but it looks like that was scaled back a bit. I guess coming together for the first time, it's probably unrealistic that the two would discuss something so personal so maybe that's something that can be explored in future films as the two characters develop their friendship.

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. I have just come back from this, and quite simply words cannot describe how awesome this film is.

Cap is the leader and role model you expect him to be.

Thor is a brute of a man, with lightning bolts, what more can you say.

Iron Man is as outstanding as his previous outings, but to the power of 10.

Black Widow, brilliant.

Hawkeye was a complete suprise, well impressed with him, for one moment do not think he is like that terrible Green Arrow sham off smallville.

And the best for last Hulk, ultimate destruction, pure rage, it moistened me lol

The film will not dissappoint, i have always loved DC, for its ability to be possible, and darker tones, Marvel has my heart with the big boys like Hulk, Thor etc, but this film was just non stop!

Humour, script, cgi. acting was all 9 out of 10, would even stretch to 10 to be fair.

The first Heli carrier scene deserves a mention, for the scale of it.

This film will not dissappoint, and stick around for the end credits, a certain one gloved being on a throne makes an appearance!

You just simply have to see it to believe it!

Saw rhe film this morning and i need to see it again, But not because i loved it because im not sure how i felt about the film. Its deffinatly good but im not sure i Felt let down because of my own overhype or because it actually wasnt the amazing film its being made out to be...i think its the former.

I think ill love it more second time round when im not overthinking things, the hulk is amazing, theirs a little to much iron man even though hes on top form, didnt quite feel the heart of thor or capa solo efforts, but the actions amazing the films speeds like a frait train,

Main problem i found with the film is the chitauri, i was one who didnt care if they were undetailed creatures to be knocked about by the avengers but honestly, their leader who appears at the begining is just awfully cheesy a little like one of the vampires from buffy which is understandable but he made the film a little laughable. Also the lack of explanation around what happens with the chitauri is also a let down. The whole film is a weird mix of fun, funny, cheesy and at times dark and it didnt feel like a mix that entirely worked for me. It also ends to quickly. But as i said a second viewing could change my mind, except the chitauri leader hes just to poorly done,

No tdkr or amazing spiderman trailers attached to the movies in the uk apparently, it wasnt on my screening or several of my firneds around the country, and my friend who works at the cinema says theirs no copys of either trailers in yet.....so USA youve got one thing over us....But weve Seen the Avengers! Oh btw the 3D is actually good in the avengers but honestly it was a distraction, id go 2D....but if you want it to have a huge opening in the U.S. go 3D to give them extra money!
