David Hasselhoff,"I Was The Ultimate Nick Fury"

Samuel L. Jackson has played S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury in 5 Marvel films including The Avengers and has generally garnered praise for his performance but he's not the first actor to play the one-eyed master spy.

Speaking to Movieline Baywatch alum David Hasselhoff, affectionately known as 'The Hoff' reflected on his time under the Nick Fury eyepatch and a few conversations he had with Stan Lee and Avi Arad. Reportedly, Hasselhoff says he earned Lee’s praise for his 1998 portrayal of Fury, in Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and was a little "miffed" to learn the character would be portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson---

“I didn’t see The Avengers yet,” Hasselhoff stated while promoting his latest film, Piranha 3DD. “I love Sam Jackson, but you know… my Nick Fury was the organic Nick Fury that was written and discussed with Stan Lee before anyone got in there to change it [presumable he's referring to the Ultimate Nick Fury]. Nick Fury was written to be tongue-in-cheek, and he had a cigar in his mouth, he was a tough guy — he was cool.”

“Stan Lee said, ‘You’re the ultimate Nick Fury,’” [wonder if that pun was intended]. “Avi Arad, when they bought it, said, ‘Don’t worry, you’re going to be the Nick Fury forever,’ and they lied. [Pause] But that happens to me all the time. That’s when you realize life isn’t fair.”

The Avengers is an American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to save the world from destruction.

Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man in May 2008, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in August 2011 and New York City in September 2011. The film was converted to 3D in post-production.

The Avengers was released in the United States on May 4, 2012 in 2D and 3D.

I was really hoping for a Hoff cameo in The Avengers as Fury's LMD. CCan you imagine Sammy Jackson's reaction to such a failure in likeness? Would've been awesome. They should so do that in the sequel.
Not enough easter eggs in The Avengers. Only thing wtrong with it.

After seeing both Nick Fury's, I have to say I appreciated Hasselhoff's the most simply because of what he said here in the article.

Sam's Fury wasn't good until Avengers. He wasn't allowed to phone in his performance and seem to be directed this time. Hat off to Whedon. I can't stand Fury IM2

To tell you the truth,Samuel L. Jackson does so good as Fury, that I've replaced the classic fury with his nick fury in every single marvel story that has the original Nick Fury.

Sam Jackson was way better as Nick Fury, but I really do wish that Marvel had gone with a 616 style Fury for the movies.

My first thought when I read the article was "When they said you would be Nick Fury forever then why didn't you push for a contract to be signed for you to be Nick Fury forever so you wouldn't be heart broken now?" Lol. They don't call it show "business" for nothing. Lol. It is a business first. Next time get your paperwork right. SMH.
