Highlights From Joss Whedon's AVENGERS 2 & MARVEL TV Show Japanese Interview

Previously, we had an indecipherable translation of Whedon's interview with Gizmodo Japan but now we have a more intuitive summary of what was discussed. Nothing new on the Avengers 2 front but Whedon did shed some light on his television show.

The Avengers recently opened in Japan and in attendance were Joss Whedon, Kevin Feige and Samuel L. Jackson. Recently, an interview with Whedon made the usual internet rounds, albeit with a less than stellar translation. Well now, we have a basic gist of what was said thanks to Fandango. Unsurprisingly, most of what Whedon said was a reiteration of what's already been stated previously, primarily that the Avengers sequel will be 'smaller' with more of a personal emphasis on the characters. Said Whedon---

"Normally, a sequel is supposed to be bigger than the first film, but I actually think it should be smaller. In saying that though, people might ask 'Is the volume of the film going to decrease?' but that's not the case."

"Of course, new characters will be added but presently we're still trying to figure out how they'll encounter our wonderful cast (referring to the actors from the first film). [The cast] all have tremendous respect for each other and how you work the new characters into that synergy is something I'm still trying to figure out. I think instead of how big of a scale the movie/story is, the most important thing is, how much devotion you can put forth. Films have an ability to be large in scale but also be personal. It's a godsend that makes the issue of adding characters irrelevant. The real question is how deep we can dig down into the story."

Previously Whedon has stated that he would like to add a female character in the Avengers sequel so unless Feige and co. are pulling a 'Kansas City Shuffle' I think that still holds true. Of course, we received news not too far back that Anthony Mckie would be portraying The Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Solder so he too is a candidate for Avengers 2, although it's more likely he'll be conspicuously absent a la War Machine and The Warriors Three.

As for the Marvel television show, Whedon apparently revealed that the show will indeed have some relation to the first Avengers film as the network is keen on profiting off 'The Avengers brand'.

Whedon did say that characters from The Avengers will 'occasionally appear on the show and that the show will focus on the various conflicts between Marvel characters in a fresh, realistic manner'.

In what capacity they appear is anyone's guess as it should be noted that Whedon said the characters not actors will appear. There's also the possibility that the television show could recycle footage from the films as well. Still, that's a very interesting development on the television front and I think this also kills the speculation that Whedon is working on Guillermo del Toro's Hulk show as that is reportedly a standalone venture which doesn't tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Well if its an 'Avengers:The Initiative' training -camp for new heroes bootcamp type-deal - it would be easy to have cameos from the established Heroes.

Less sure about how a show based on 'Runaways' would have them encountering them.

Hopefully one of those characters is Ant-Man (preferably the Hank Pym version) and i REALLY hope the show is Hulk. I was very against it initially but if Joss is involvd and SOMEHOW they work out the CG and Mark Riffalo is involved then bring it on. Seeing as a film doesnt seem to be in the cards right now it would be a great way to keep him in th public eye

Also i dont know much about Gaurdians of the Galaxy or its timeline in relation to the rest of Marvel, can someone me out? Does it just take place in space like a Green Lantern corps version of th avengers or is it in thefuture? Is there a chace those characters (or at least a few) could be feaured in Avengers 2 or do you think its mainly just Thanos set up?

Hmm, seeing the members of The Avengers appearing in the TV show - whatever it really is - should be very interesting.

Can't wait to see how it plays out. No matter how crappy and pathetic life is there's always something aweome to look forward to.

Short term goal. Take a few more days off from skating.

Roll in to turd pile on 8 foot wall. Day two get the whiplash in neck. Day three feels like took a baseball bat to side of arm. The hip hurt before I smashed it into cement.

Wolverine = Inspiration (healing powers)

clean bones swiss = hauling ass. So stoked to get back out there. Yeah Marvel Blazing the way and it was nice that you could understand what Joss W is saying. Take notes DC/WB J Whedon to Marvel. Bruce Timm could be for DC

@ NOID: I agree. I think if they do a Hulk TV show now, that's not tied into the MCU, it's just going to confuse a lot of the audience. Either tie it in or let it go.

(No matter how awesome it might be as a stand alone.)

If he's truly interested in adding a female character he doesn't have to think too hard about it. Her name is Janet Van Dyne and she was the first female character in the Avengers in BOTH Marvel Comic universes. Duh.

Get rid of Black Widow and add Goliath and Wasp and it's a done deal with all the necessary characters in place for Vision, Ultron, and so forth.
FoxForce5
FoxForce5 - 8/22/2012, 9:32 AM
Also, we all know by now that Daredevil would make a good show and can still ne tied to the MCU without blowing the budget to epic proportions. Plus, as an added bonus, it would be a great way to introduce Jessica Walters to the public without having to touch on She-Hulk, then she can pop UN in an Avengers sequel or in Hulk 2 (if it ever happens) and we can move ahead with her.

Just a thought.

Funny story, a few months ago, I had a dream that Joss was one of my college professors! I even called him "Professor Whedon" lol

I hope Whedon adds Ms Marvel in Avengers 2. Also Ant-man and the Wasp.

As for Black Widow and Hawkeye, they can still be part of the MCU, but I think they should stay in the Captain America movies (beacuse the Avengers could get too crowded).

Im very excited for the TV show!!!! My favorite option is Heroes for Hire, but as long as it is related to the MCU I think it will be great!!!

So excited to see what's coming next. I'm curious to know if Thanos will be the Avengers 2 villain or if they'll use him in a Infinity Gauntlet movie.

They could use Pym/Vision/Ultron for Avengers 2 and save Thanos for that one.

I think they should keep the avengers in movies only watching a tv show with a limited budget will only lessen the appeal of the main characters besides the superhero tv series has been done to death.

i would love to see a guardians of the galaxy movie set in the 31st century...one of the things i loved the most about Jim Valentino's run is to find out what happened to characters in the future (Ie the Starks, The Spirit Of Vengeance, The Punishers, etc).

They could do Yondu, Vance, Charlie-27 without breaking the bank. They could also add Star-Lord, Drax, and Gamora (even though yes they are in the present...time travel is easy enough to explain).

Think of it as Stark Trek with superheroes...a cross between stargate, time travel, and stark trek (whom Jim Valentino said he was a big fan of...he is the guy that wrote the 90s series)

Where are the live-action tv show rights for X-Men? X-Factor? Is this a loophole that Disney could use to show the world how the X-Men should really work?

If they did the Astonishing Team (like the one from Whedon's comic book arc), they'd have Emma, Scott, Kitty, Beast, Wolverine, and then students (and possibly Colossus). Beast would be the hardest to deal with graphics-wise. Emma's diamond form and Colossus's steel form might be harder to deal with, but Scott's blast, Emma's TP, Kitty's phasing, Wolvie's claws . . . most of these wouldn't be hard too hard to do with CGI, I'd think.

One way or another, you know that Joss is going to do a movie with a strong female character (Think River from Firefly, or Buffy from, well, Buffy).

i think Ant-Man SHOULD be a TV series and let Black Panther and the Hulk be big screen franchises. also SHIELD could make a cool series, but, the actors (Sam Jackson, ScarJo and Renner) would just cost too much.

Runaways would be cool too..but, how about a tv series bout that guy in the MARVELS comic book mini series..the old photographer..oh yeah, PHIL SHELDON's the name. i mean, sure, he can be a young photographer covering the heroes of today and not starting out in Cap'n America's days..that would be interesting, i think.
