Chris Evans Talks CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE AVENGERS & SNOWPIERCER; Hayley Atwell Remains Coy On THE WINTER SOLDIER

Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell briefly talk about Captain America: The Winter Soldier while Chris also goes on to discuss The Avengers and Joon-ho Bong's adaptation of the graphic novel Snowpiercer.

While promoting The Iceman at this year's Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) actor Chris Evans fielded the inevitable Marvel related questions pertaining to The Avenges and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I was kind enough to type up a transcript of the interview below, you can click HERE to watch the video over at Tribute.

On working on big budget movies like Captain America: The First Avengers and The Avengers versus small indie films like The Iceman-
Chris Evans: I've been pretty candid in the past, I'm not a huge fan of the
studio movies. From 'soup to nuts' the process of making those movies is very tedious and sometimes the final product becomes-the original vision becomes homogenized. And then the promoting process is a real chore. I much prefer these smaller films, they're more my speed. So you do these giant movies and thank god, (Captain America:TFA and The Avengers) were good because they aren't always. They came out so well, I couldn't be more lucky. It affords you the opportunity to go do the smaller things that you want to do. I'm in such a perfect situation where I get to do (the Marvel movies) every six months or so with a group of people I love, I love Marvel and I love The Avengers. And in my downtime I get to go and do movies like this, I couldn't be luckier.

Did he expect the box office reaction to The Avengers-
CE: No, god no. I go into every movie thinking its going to be the worst thing in the world. You hope its going to be great but the fact is, if it was easier to do, there would be more good movies. But making a movie is a giant collaboration of all these creative people, all these cooks in the kitchen, its unfortunate but true, often when I go to the movies I leave disappointed. I'm just like, 'meh.' Most times the best movies I see are at festivals like TIFF. You go to a big, blockbuster summer-movie, what are the chances of you walking out disappointed? Pretty good, in my opinion.

So when you jump on board to a giant, studio film, you think 'what are the chances?' What are the chances that this is going to come out good? Unfortunately, slim . So, the fact that (The Avengers) came out the way it did....That Joss man, that Joss Whedon, thank god for Joss Whedon....so good! It's him man, it's him, without that guy these things don't work.

On beginning prep for Captain America: The Winter Soldier-
CE: I'm dreading it (the physical transformation), this is what I keep thinking. We start Cap 2 in March so come January I have to get back into that routine. All I'm thinking about is the future movies, like 'god, how am I going to keep getting big', it's such a chore. I hate to admit it but it's not easy (laughs). It's months and months of lifting heavy stuff and...not looking forward to it. But, it's worth it because I am happy with the movies and I do love the character so come January, my life is going to be different. It's such a commitment, top-to-bottom, its not just lifting, sleep is important, your diet is important. It's a complete commitment but what am I saying, it's good problems to have. "Ugh, it's just so difficult, I'd much rather be in the coal mines" (laughs) .

The defining role that changed his life-
CE: I guess it would be Captain America, I might've said Johnny Storm, Fantastic Four- that was sort of the first time on a big studio movie. After that movie, I think I got put on....there's tiers to your career and I think that was the first stepping stone that allowed me to be in another arena on studio's lists. On an industry scale, I'd say Fantastic Four and on a more public scale, Captain America.

On Snow Piercer-
CE: It's a really interesting movie, very different, very different but I think it's going to be fantastic. It takes place in the future, it's kind of a heightened reality. All of society lives on a train, the world is frozen over and its kind of an allegory for social structures where the poorest people are in the back of the train and as you move forward in the train, (social) classes increase. There's a revolution from the people at the back of the train against the people in the front of the train and it really is a very clever movie. It's very different and very strange but really interesting.

On Snowpiercer co-star Allison Pill-
CE: She's fantastic, I did Scott Pilgrim with her. She's just so good and her character in Snowpiercer is great. She's perfect in it.

Update: A bit more from Chris on Captain America 2, the Winter Soldier storyline and the addition of The Falcon.

And over at HeyUGuys! Peggy Carter actress Hayley Atwell clears up some confusion about a scene in The Avengers script that Joss Whedon described as "the best scene he wrote" concerning Steve and Peggy meeting up in the present day. Joss stated the scene was removed prompting many to assume that it was shot but left on the cutting room floor. Not so, says Hayley Atwell, the scene was never filmed meaning that it never advanced past the script stage. Hayley goes on to say Peggy is 'gone, long-gone and it's up to the Marvel Studios team to propel the story forward.' We know thanks to the deleted scene on The Avengers blu-ray/dvd that Peggy is not 'long-gone' and is still alive. Is her apparent confusion a bluff or an indication that she's secretly having discussions about playing a different Carter?

He never reminded me of Cap. He gave a decent performance as a character that's reffered to as Captain America, but he just wasn't at all Cap for me.

He pulled off Caps personality fairly well in my opinion...in the sense that he didn't totally [frick] it up. He came off as a leader, which was crucial because any less would've been a complete fail and waste of the character BUT...he was still the weakest link as far as casting goes. The only reason why I feel he was even more poorly cast than Scarjo is because Cap is a far more iconic role and needed to be filled by someone who actually looked the part. Most people may not have a problem with Scarjo/BW because they're not familiar with the character in the first place so I can give that a pass, but Evans was a horrible choice for Cap. Why the hell did Joss let him go back to his scrawny Chris Evans build anyway? At least Evans is pretty much my only criticism for this otherwise near perfect cbm.

My question is this...was he really smaller in the avengers, or was it the more form fitting suit?! Cause in first avenger he had all that bulky garb. Mmmm. I hope they keep weight and body fat stats for each movie so they match the prior films.

WTF are they giving these actors if it only takes 2 months for Chris Evens to get that big?

I spent 6 months, 2 hours a day, five days on and 1 day off and I'm no where near the size of Chris Evans in Captain America.

jessepostal - 9/12/2012, 7:50 AM
Evans looks smaller in the avengers because of the costume, the costume in tfa was baggy and had the fake muscle pads in it, the avengers suit didnt, they were going for the sleek look, I love Evans as cap, he was great in tfa, but they treated him different in the avengers, they gave him some corny dialogue IMO. Evens cap works in these movies, I can't see the comic cap working as much. At least not the older very patriotic and positive cap books

I think he pulled off Cap perfectly. I wouldn't want to see any other actor in the role for the next fifteen years! I've watched Cap many times now. Definitely one of my top five.

It wasn't just his costume...Evans was waaaaay bigger in CATFA. He was juiced up for sure and not on just HGH. You need to be on that stuff for six months just to get it working and then the results are more definition then bulk. He was on a full blown cycle...I'd bet your nuts on it. The guy is built like a woman. In his natural state he does not look like Cap. Period. Cap is supposed to be at peak strength level attainable by a human being plus 25% not because of magic or mutation but because of those super steroids. That would show as added muscle mass big time. Evans was a poor choice. He won't even commit to the role 100%. If he was committed he would make sure he did the work to fit the part. You don't see Bale skimping on the physical prep ever. Jesus Evans, you are now a part of what's probably going to be the biggest film franchise OF ALL TIME. You think you could show a little enthusiasm? Or maybe just a little more initiative? I think any one on this site would.

@A6K

actors have nothing else to do when they're supposed to be bulking up. so he probably worked out even harder and longer than you did. see, coz its part of his job, they pay him to get pick and take good care of him for it.

he was smaller in avengers? Griff? Maybe he was or maybe because we see the immense transformation in cap tfa that it makes it seem hes bigger i dont know

@superpooper You do know that Bale has gone on record as stating that he was not in the same shape for TDK that he was in for Batman Begins?

Evans comes off as a real, honest straight shooter who isn't "Hollywood." I didn't like him as Cap but the more I see and hear from him, the more I admit that I was wrong. Great actor, looking forward to seeing him, Falcon, SHIELD, and Winter Solider!

The coal mines part reminded me of zoolander.

And I really wish we could see this Peggy and Steve scene in CA2. If it's THAT good I'm really looking forward to it.

^^ Absolurely. He's a great guy. A great guy who doesn't look a thing like Captain America and should've never got the part. They could've done better. But you're probably right. He's a great guy. lol.

Man, Evans really comes off as a cool and humble guy! He seems like the type of person I'd want to get a beer with! LOL

Can't wait for this movie! TFA is my third favorite of the MCU films (right behind Iron Man and The Avengers).
superpooper
superpooper - 9/12/2012, 8:44 AM
@BluePallando Dude, come on. It's obvious he's not as bulked up as he was in the first one. That suit is tighter but I don't care how tight it is, it's not going to make a buffed dude look skinny. Regardless, even bulked up he didn't look the part. He just DOESN"T.

@Godzillafart I agree. Bale was a shitty Batman, but I think in Nolanverse Bats strays so far from what is canon that you just have to accept that comic Batman and Nolan Batman are too different things. Still, if Evans showed half or even a quarter of the stones that Bale has when it comes to committing to a role mind and body you probably wouldn't have as many assholes like me bitching about him. But I'd still be bitching about him cuz he sucks.

@a6k- im guessing that the actors have close to a same work out routine as you but most likely are also eating as many calories as physically possible. So my advice from when i used to work out- eat too much, get good sleep everynight, and keep lifting.
