Joss Whedon On Juggling THE AVENGERS Sequel And S.H.I.E.L.D.

The director talks about his level of involvement with ABC's S.H.I.E.L.D. series. Says The Avengers sequel is his number one priority and that he'll work on the show as his "schedule allows".

Joss Whedon has a pretty busy schedule in 2013 and prioritizing his time means he won't be the day-to-day decision maker for ABC's S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff---

“One of the great things about having worked for so damn long is that there are so many people that I truly trust.” Whedon told EW that his contributions to the show will be “as my schedule allows,” and will primarily consist of helping the team of brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen brainstorm stories. He'll also be doing the usual exec producer/overseer stuff of reviewing and approving cuts of episodes. ”I have to maintain a fine balance between not hurting The Avengers, which is my number one priority right now, and not be the guy who shows up once a month and undoes everything that’s been done by everyone else.” Joss is aware that despite not wishing to be that guy, it could happen unintentionally. To that point, Joss shared this anecdotal story from his days overseeing Buffy. ”Back when I was doing Buffy, I made a joke once. I said, ‘We’re going to do leprechauns! It’s going to be the best episode ever!’ And Marti Noxon, who just started as a staff writer, came back three days later and said, ‘I spent three days doing research on leprechauns.’ And I was like: What the f— are you talking about?’

Jeffrey Bell (Angel) will also serve as one of the producers of the show which will star Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker and Brett Dalton.

Marvel's The Avengers or simply The Avengers is a 2012 American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is scripted and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to form a team that must stop Thor's adoptive brother Loki from subjugating Earth.

The Avengers premiered on April 11, 2012, at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California. The film received positive reviews from most film critics and set or tied numerous box office records, including the biggest opening weekend in North America and the fastest film to gross $1 billion. The Avengers grossed $1.51 billion worldwide, and became the third highest-grossing film of all time. The film was released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on September 25, 2012. A sequel to be written and directed by Whedon is scheduled for release on May 1, 2015.

The good thing about Whedon returning of A2 is that he got to do what he wanted with A1 and got to see if the response would be positive, which it overwhelmingly was.

That positive response was validation for both him and for Marvel execs saying "what Whedon does, works" and they will let him continue to do the same for A2.

That means everything he wanted to do but wasn't 100% sure of for A1, will get put into the sequel!!!

This pleases me.

Wasn't the Ant-Man Comic-Con footage supposed to be polished up and released soon? Or are they saving that for playing in front of Iron Man 3.

And the one thing we didn't get in A1, which was Cap actually saying "avengers assemble!" will actually work and fit in this time. The team knows one another, they know cap is the leader, and they know they may have to come together to fight again.

It fits into the scenario foe the sequel. You can bet we will be hearing it.

Can't wait for Avengers 2! I think we are either getting Thanos or Masters of Evil as villains. Either way, it will be epic! Also interested to see the SHIELD show.

@Nomis and @monkey: good times. I remember watching those things on weekends all the time too

@cipher: hells yes!

@aztec: you forgot: BITCH on the end of that

I'm not a Whedon fan, the only thing of his I've seen is the Avengers (which was so much fun I can't even put it into words).

But this weekend I finally watched Cabin in the Woods after hearing so many good things about it and I was really letdown. I guess my expectations were too high, I don't know.

Okay...plot for The Avengers 2....The Avengers, having just failed to defeat Thanos at the beginning of the movie, enlists the aid of a group of space smugglers in a ship called Serenity. Captain Malcolm Reynolds and Captain America butt heads quite a bit, but come together for the final showdown against Thanos. ;)

I would be all for a Masters of Evil sequel so long as they set it up right with the Phase 2 movies. Introduce Baron Zemo in Captain America: Winter Soldier, give us Radioactive Man in Iron Man 3, show Amora/Enchantress and Executioner in Thor 2, feature Ultron in Antman and you already have the core for an epic villain teamup. Abomination was already introduced in Incredible Hulk and is waiting in some secret SHIELD laboratory.

lmao@ KamenRider

Avengers 2 will be the real test of the Marvel movies, can they recapture the magic of the first movie but also have a proper engaging story

The story of the first one didnt matter because it was bringing these characters together to fight a threat, all they needed was great actors, well written characters, great action and a great villain, which they had. But the plot was just about there, they need a proper engaging story in the sequel, show the world what the Avengers can do

I'm most looking forward to The Avengers 2, but I'm really excited about the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show.

I think both are going to kick major ass!!!

^^That would be a surefire way to make even more money than the first...

Especially if we get to see some of the masters meet in prison in the same movie and there's truth to what Wardell said about Ultron leading the Masters.

Maybe he leads them to freedom in a prison break only to set them up for future movies, but he really allies with Thanos. What if AIM tried to trick the gov't/world into using Ultron to defend from Thanos and it all goes terrible. Ultron becomes a global military system, it was supposed to protect from any event bigger than New York, without causing destruction or civilian casualties so the military adopted it. They trust it to hold Thanos's new army at bay for a while, forcing Thanos onto the planet... Shield and Pym know better than to put all their faith in Ultron, being marketed as the Ultimate name in defense.
