Joss Whedon Confirms Agent Coulson Is Returning From The Dead In S.H.I.E.L.D.

It seems you can put those theories of Life Model Decoys, holograms, clones, Skrull impostor and any other presumptive rationales about how Agent Coulson will return to star in ABC's S.H.I.E.L.D. show away.

From previous interviews, we knew Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) would be the lead of ABC's S.H.I.E.L.D. show but we didn't know how showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen, Joss,Jed, Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb would accomplish this seeing as how Coulson died at the hands of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in The Avengers. With the show taking place after the climatic battle with the Chituari in NYC many theorized that Coulson would be seen in flashback, that he was really a robot, a Skrull shape-shifter or something else equally outlandish. Well S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Joss Whedon told the crowd at SXSW that Coulson is in fact returning from the dead.

“I’ll tell you guys this, Heimlich,” Whedon joked, before effectively clamming up about the show. “I can’t talk about it,” he admitted, but said that he did bring Coulson back from the dead for the ABC drama. “Yes. For realsies.”

Now that it's established that Coulson really did die in The Avengers and that Fury didn't lie to the other Avengers, the question now is HOW does Coulson come back from the dead? There are a number of items and methods that this could be used to accomplish this in the pages of Marvel Comics but the vast majority of such devices have yet to be presented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And for anyone still doubting, Agent Coulson himself, Clark Gregg is spreading the news on twitter.

@ LEVITIKUZ

If I recall correctly, Marvel Studios could have used the Skrulls or Kree in Avengers if they wanted to, but doing so without providing their backstory would have been an injustice.

It was pretty obvious from the scene in the Avengers that Coulson might not really be dead: Maria Hill points out that the Cap America trading cards were actually in Coulson's locker and not in his coat pocket like Fury said, and Fury says, "They needed the push." Fury lied several times in the film, which set up this big lie.

This is not the first time that a team has "come together" because someone dies, only to learn later that the person didn't really die. It is actually a pretty common plot device. Go back and watch the Avengers, looking out for how Coulson might have survived getting stabbed by Loki. It is entirely possible that a high-tech hospital might have brought him back.

Just before he died, Coulson put his hand on the side of Fury's head and said "Remember."

Why is it so hard to accept that Nick Fury lied about Coulson dying just like he lied about finding the Captain American cards on him? The medics arrived just as Coulson lost consciousness, but no one every pronounced him dead.

When Coulson died, I swear I remember people going like, "No! Coulson, whyyyyyyy!!!!" Now they say he's coming back and people are like "[frick] you Marvel!" Logic.

The Avengers 2 could show the team distancing themselves from SHIELD after finding out that Coulson never died. Broken trust could play a big role in making Avengers 2 a more personal movie.

Remember how Selvig was dying in the deleted scene in Thor and Thor revived him? Maybe that is how Coulson came back...idk.

Interesting, as people have already said, we are going on Fury's word that Coulson is dead and all through the film we have seen him lie, and be alittle manipulative to everyone around him.

It can't just be a "Oh, I am alive tolololol" explanation though, it must be a good one to make people forgive his revival, maybe it could be explained by the Infinity Formula that Fury in the comics had to take to pro-long his life span.

Wow some of you guys get way too worked up about nothing. It was never fully established that he died anyway. It has always been always ambiguous. We know Fury lied about the bloody Cap. cards so he could've lied to the team just to get them motivated. Think of how untrusting Stark will be once he finds out Fury lied about Coulson. It will start the rift that separates the Avengers from Shield.
I'm sure this has been Marvel's plan all along.

If I had to guess I'd say he somehow got an artificial heart or something. It's also likely that this will not be something glossed over in the pilot, it'll be either dramatically explained or it'll be a mystery they draw out over the series..
so at least one of the new characters will probably be responsible for bringing him back..

It's overreactions like Levitzuz that give fanboys a bad name. Relax you [frick]ing spaz.
Who knows how they plan to explain it but at least wait until you see it before you spit all over the monitor. People have survived worse in real life for [frick] sakes, maybe he was resuscitated and had a great surgeon. Take a deep breath.

You name certain characters that worked being brought back, that's fine but you have NO IDEA how Whedon will handle Coulson's return.

It may be very cool or very bad, wait and find out.
Comic books will always kill & resurrect people so comic book movies can too..quit being a bitch.

I'm pressed to think of examples of where a beloved TV / movie character was resurrected and this a) lessened the emotional impact of their death scene or b) ruined all other subsequent deaths in the franchise.

This LEVITIKUZ is the biggest whiner and complaining retard I've seen on this page. He complains about things he has no idea about and then admits that he has never read Marvel comics.

Who told you that the Coulson attacked in Avengers movie was a human. What if he was a LMD (Hope you know what it is) What if he went through a fatal injury but is now back with Cybernetic implants (Like Daisy Johnson and Agent Abigale brand, hope you know them too.) But I guess your life is simply based on complaining and bitching. This news is not even in detail just one word and you start jumping like chilli flakes went in your ass.

One mroe thing. 90% of the movie goers are non-fanboys and they don't even care about who is who and what is what. Its only retarded fanboys like you who bitch upon stuffs like these.

There is a reason the genre is called Fiction Fantasy because things are not real.

And what if Coulson has taken some variation of Super Soldier serum like Dum Dum Duggan. His characterization is a mix of various SHIELD agents and characters.

Atleast get your facts clear or better not talk about stuff you dunno it is better than making a fool out of yourself.

No big deal. They're bringing him back to life and Nick Fury's a cold ass liar. If anything, this means the Avengers will distrust SHIELD more than they already do.
