Joss Whedon 'Optimistic' About RDJ Return For THE AVENGERS 2

Last night, at the Much Ado About Nothing Gala Premiere in London, Avengers 2 director and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Joss Whedon touched on the chances of Robert Downey Jr.'s return.

"As far as Robert [Downey Jr.]. I'm not in on that," said Joss about the Iron Man 3 actor's negotiations with Marvel Studios. Robert Downey Jr.'s contract to play Iron Man has been filled and currently, he's negotiating a new contract to reprise the role for another string of films. Various reports says those negotiations are not going too well and would be described as cantankerous at best. Joss added, "but I'm optimistic" that Downey will return. He quickly changed subjects, making a joke about the status of Samuel L. Jackson's return as Nick Fury in The Avengers sequel. "As far as Samuel [Jackson], I guess he could audition. I'd read him or I'd have someone read him and I'd look at the tape," quipped Whedon.

Below, are more videos with Whedon at the Gala Premiere, where he touches on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and gives a brief message to all his fans.

@fett

I believe it was $2M and not $200K.

If fans get arsey about him potentially not doing it - it will only push him away further.
The guy WANTS to play Stark, he enjoys it - he's great at it - born to play that role - , but he also wants to play other roles as an actor - comic-book movie fans can't expect to chain him to the role.

RDJ is a prick and clearly not the only actor who can play the character. There are tons of unknowns out there that don't even get a chance.

Why does everyone hate to say Levi's right when I'm right? Sure I may be an ass, a dick, and a douche at times but I do make good points most of the time. Ok 75% of the time. 50%? I need a drink.

Damn I spilled my drink. Well at least I got this slinky.

On no my slinky's on fire! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would be utterly shocked and amazed if RDJ didn't come back for at least Avengers 2 & 3. Now I doubt we'll see him in IM4 or anything beyond Avengers 3 but I'd be utterly shocked if he walked way from more than like at least 100 mill for both films. What was his payday on Avengers like 70 million it's definitely going to be north of that for Avengers 2 & 3.

@fettastic: I was under the impression it was 2M as well and afaik Hemsworth got 500K for Thor so it seems weird he'd have less for The Avengers. 2M or 200K though, it's still too little. RDJ should get paid the most imo but the rest of the cast have become very important to this franchise too. These people are good at their job while other actors get paid more to ass rape characters. It's crazy.

Anyway, RDJ will be back. He doesn't need to the gig but he seems to enjoy it and he did say he'll continue to play Tony as long as Marvel wants him. Besides, from what's been said about RDJ's role to his castmates (sort of a big brother figure) it might inspire more departures if he leaves which Marvel will want to avoid.

@fettastic stop misquoting things. It was a rumor that supposedly one of the main or supporting actors in the Avengers only got $200,000 for there role. That could be anyone from Cobie Smulders to Mark Ruffalo. Downey got more the 50 million after all was said and done. So Marvel most certainly not being complete cheap-o's with there money.

Of course he's going to be back. He's not stupid enough to pass up the paycheck that will come with The Avengers 2.

Noone of the stars of Avengers made 200k that is a ridiculous rumor somebody started and all the fools are running with it.

2 to 5 mill is more like it.
Yeah peanuts compared to RDJ but more than some will make in their lives

Can't have Tony Stark and The Avenger's 2 with the main character. With out him it'll just be The Avenger's.
