In 2010 THQ acquired the rights to Marvel video games, while most have been fairly dissappointing; THQ Australia decided to diversify the Avengers and Marvel games from the past by placing you in the shoes of various Marvel heroes in a way that hasn't been seen both before or yet.

As the game grew, it became a very unique and interesting title. While it was never formally announced, the game drew attention from gamers and Marvel fans for it's interesting gameplay choices and the decision to adapt Secret Invasion and feature the Skrulls.

In the video we get to see a lot more from the cancelled title. Beyon the brief gameplay video released shortly after it'c cancellation, this is the best look yet at a game that simply couldn't take off the ground.

Ultimaely while the game would've featured Thor, Hulk, captain America, and Iron Man; it would've added Hawkeye, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, and War Machine as playable characters. There were even plans to incorporate Hank Pym, Ultron, and Vision in some capacity.

While many facotrs are to blame for the game being cancelled, it's a shame that whether it was good, mediocre, or bad; nobody ever got to play it and find out. That's the greatest shame really.

Initially I never would've been interested in a first person Avengers game from THQ, but this video shows that the project had some promise, I would've liked to have seen a finished product. Now I'm kind of jonesing for a Marvel game( a good one), you know, one that isn't Lego based! Though those games are awesome.

I actually like the idea of a first person co-op superhero game....damn shame

So Marvel could have saved it. They said no and when the project was canceled Bendis asked if he could keep a copy of the game.

And they said when they asked Marvel, a decent chunk of the game was done.

So why didn't Marvel back them up?

Marvel is dropping the ball in two areas for me: cartoons (because f*ck their new animated universe) and games. Marvel really, really needs an Honest-to-God good AAA game (Marvel vs Capcom doesn't count).

@Melkaticox

1. Well yea I know but given how they said a good chunk was done, it wouldn't be like Marvel is paying for an entire game.

Forgot about 2 & 3.

Sadly Disney hates video games and we'll never see good Marvel or Star Wars games. Had they been smart they could have made LucasArts their video game developer, but instead they closed that company. All they care about is cellphone games. Which is sad and interesting because the video game market these days is bigger than the movie market. Yes I know the ones that make the big money are the famous titles, but you can't tell me Marvel and Star Wars wouldn't be a part of the big video game sellers.

Disney really needs to start diversifying in that market, because Disney could have a goldmine with their IPs. They just need to get the right developers and not worry about the games being for kids. I remember Disney was working on a Pirates of the Caribbean game, but canceled it because it would have been M. Lots of the developers and people that worked in the industry talked about how great of a game it was and the best way to describe it was Red Dead Redemption, but instead of the Wild West it was an open world pirate game.

Seemed pretty interesting. Really like the idea of a first person superhero game. I always thought it would be cool to have a superhero game where they give you the option to switch back and forth between third and first.

For all of Marvel's success in TV and Movies, they really seem to be completely asleep at the wheel on games. There is some possibility that Disney has some secret Marvel Manhattan Project in development at Beenox or an in-house studio, if so it's a goddamn well kept secret... One hopes that there are people smart enough at Disney to realize that copying Warner Brothers' Rocksteady model is a no-brainer.

If they spent half the budget of an Avengers film on a 5 year development cycle for a companion game to the Infinity War films, they'd probably make another billion dollars.

Beenox no longer has Spider-Man or Marvel's license.

Also Marvel does have an Avengers game in development.

Disney needs to get some talented developers to work on their games. Still can't believe they gave EA exclusive rights for who knows how long.

Spock0Clock - 11/29/2015, 6:18 PM
@LEVITIKUZ

I knew that Beenox is still working with Disney properties, so assumed it was still possible (and reasonably obvious considering that they had done reasonably well in the past, but really just need resources, staff, and time to make a real AAA effort). Outside of the mobile stuff, who actually does have the license to make Marvel console games?

"I thought that Beenox is still working with Disney properties"

My bad. Maybe I thought Skylanders was related that Disney Infinity thing. As you can tell, this isn't something I keep up with all that much.

@Spock0Clock

You clicked it!

But I believe Marvel owns their gaming rights. Activison, THQ, Ubisoft, and SEGA all had the license around the same time and I believe given how Activision no longer has Spidey's license that Marvel has all their gaming licenses back.

Only ones they probably gave away was granting Lego the chance to do Marvel games but unlikely they gave Lego their complete license.

So unlike the film rights, Marvel has all their gaming rights I believe. They just choose not to make games. Well not choose. Telltale is developing a Marvel game but I'm optimistic and hoping it ain't connected to the MCU.

That will kill me if Marvel games are connected to the MCU because nobody wants that bullshit.

I would love to see a Captain America game with Arkham mechanics and a Thor game with God of War mechanics.

@LEVITIKUZ

Well, EA is doing Star Wars games still so the Manhattan Project I'm thinking of (hoping for) could be happening somewhere in that massive labyrinth of a studio/publisher monstrosity. I just find it hard to believe that whoever has control over game development at Marvel would completely abandon console releases while watching the success of the Arkham series. I think I read somewhere someone at Marvel saying "they're waiting for the right idea and the right time" or something like that.

An AAA development cycle with the kind of scale of an Arkham City is at least 3 years, maybe 4 or 5 depending on how "from scratch" it is. I'm just hoping someone over there is smart enough to put 2 and 2 together on this and this dead zone of Marvel releases is a sign that they're finally taking this seriously.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 11/29/2015, 7:04 PM
Side note. Is it "An AAA" or "A AAA"? Because reading it, I think "triple-A" so it would be "A", but typing it, I went with "An".

Stupid grammar.
Luminus
Luminus - 11/29/2015, 10:33 PM
So, basically, Avengers: Mass Effect. This is the EXACT idea I had for a Marvel game. Shame.
Luminus

@Spock0Clock

It's "an AAA," because it's read as "A A A," not triple-A.
