Entertainment Weekly caught up with Mark Ruffalo to talk about his new movie Sympathy For Delicious. He was also asked some questions about his up coming portrayal of Bruce Banner/ The Hulk in Marvel's The Avengers.

On when he stars on the Avengers:

I actually start the day Sympathy For Delicious (April 29th) opens.

On his preparation for the role:

I’ve been working with (director/co-writer) Joss Whedon quite a bit on developing it, my portion of it. I’ll be working with Robert Downey, and I’m already doing the motion capture stuff. I’m excited.

On performing as both The Hulk and Bruce Banner:

I’m the first actor to do both. It’s really cool. I was surprised by how well my theater training played into the motion capture thing, because it’s all your imagination. When he moves across the ground, I want him using all fours, using his arms as much as his legs to move from here to there. I’d like to capture some of the primitive aspect of him.

On if he sees The Hulk as a kind of hunched, gorilla-type:

Not so much hunched, but the low center of gravity, and the flailing of the arms sometimes.

On what the Hulk will look like:

He looks just like me, but bloated and green. And big! He looks like me 40 pounds ago.

On not having to get in shape like the other cast members:

It’s not a bad deal! The more of a difference there is between Mark and the Hulk, the happier everyone seems to be. I was like, ‘So do you want me to get ripped up?’ And they went, ‘No, no, no, no, no, no! Nice and trim. We want you nice and trim.’ They said, ‘We want you to look good with your shirt off, but we don’t want you strapped.’ I can live with that. And so can my wife!

The Avengers opens on May 4, 2012

I hope Marvel knows what they're doing. When I think of the Hulk, I don't picture Mark Ruffalo's face on him.

I have to admit I rewatched The Incredible Hulk last night and I did try and picture Ruffolo delivering the lines and coming across as a genuine geeky scientist dealt a duff card. And without being a Nortonist I have to admit I found it tough. Norton really nailed the Banner side of the personality and Ruffolo is going to have a tough job recreating persona. It's all well and good talking about Hulk as a character continuously but Banner is the core of this hidden rage. If Ruffolo can't convey that then walking around like a gorilla isn't going to help anything. Everything worked in TIH so trying to the character at this point the already constructed MCU is a thinker to me.

Hulk (2008) looks more like Ruffalo than Norton anyway:

Ruffalo can say what he wants about Hulk but at the end of the day Whedon and Fiege (Marvel) will keep things on par with Norton's Hulk in order to keep that continuity. They may change the face some but the color and overall look of his body should be maintained.

I only hope that they keep Mark Ruffalo's Avatar Hulk's green skin color and the Hulk's physique (beyond perfect with zero bodyfat) consistent with The 2008 Hulk

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY

I'm "high on Norton" because the Hulk is my favorite character and Norton made a more traditional approach to the character look cool (which means a lot when you consider how much the Eric Bana movie sucked). The reason it frustrates me that he won't be in the Avengers is that the overarching continuity was the most exciting thing about this movie. You got RBJ, Hemsworth, and Evans all coming together from iconic movies they've done alone. Not only does this continuity make the Avengers look sweet, it makes the characters seem a lot more... valuable, if you will. The audience has every right to feel less excited about the Hulk because even though they take place in the same cinematic universe his appearance doesn't mark the epic return of Norton's Hulk. RBJ, Hemsworth, and Evans will get all the non-comic readers excited, but Ruffalo will just make them wonder whether or not the Hulk is as important as the other three... So, that's what grinds my gears. lol

HULK DOES NOT WALK ON ALL FOURS!!! Marvel, do NOT let this idiot walk on all fours!!! C'mon, you're Marvel for cryin out loud, you know what these characters are. DO NOT LEAVE THE INTERPRETATION TO SOME HACK, NON-COMIC BOOK READING ACTOR! Ruffalo, ya gotta go!

Then again, karma is a bi_tch, Marvel screwed Ed Norton, Ruffalo is gonna screw Marvel!

IN LETERRIER’S INCREDIBLE HULK, HIS VERSION WAS A BIT BETTER BUT IT DIDN’T STAY TRUE TO AARON SIM’S CONCEPT FOR THE FILM, WHICH WAS AMAZING. IN FACT, HIS FACE SEEMS TO CHANGE COMPLETELY FROM SHOT TO SHOT...

"HACK, NON-COMIC BOOK READING ACTOR?"

You're a fool, Ruffalo is a hell of an actor.
Jesus you'd swear reading comics makes you higher class.
He's already a Hulk fan, and he's got Marvel Studios to give him all the info he needs.

I don't think it's going to be nearly as bad as some people are making it out to be. Sounds like he's just giving the Hulk a more primal and untamed edge.

I've never seen Ruffalo act, but I'm starting to warm to him, sure I'll miss Norton, but the guy is so excited about all this, I cant help but kinda like him in the role. As long as theres a big contrast between Banner and Hulk (Banner being quite slim and gaunt, Hulk being... well, hulking) then I'll be happy.
No to Hulk walking on all 4s though, he's got good coordination skills, he's a brute, but he's not a Neanderthal (maybe if he's running at top speed into a sharp turn, but even then he should only use his hand(s) to steady himself briefly). And they should keep the Hulk from the last film anyway for continuity's sake, maybe tweak the face slightly to look more like Ruffalo but dont start from scratch again, the Hulk's body in that film was freakin perfect!

Guys, please check out my new fan fic if you have time X-Men Origins Magneto

Anthony Hopkins etc etc
But were too cheap for Edward Norton and Terrance friggin' Howard?

Logic at it's finest.

ONLY 40lbs??? What's with the small ass hulk. Don't call it HULK if it really isn't a HULK...

And WTF is up with the knuckle dragging??? The Hulk does NOT drag his knuckles!!!!

@ZeroEthic

Its not the 40 lbs Im worried about..its the Hulk being bloated. Hulk is pure muscle, zero fat (just like 2008 Hulk)...not bloated.

Eric Bana's Hulk looked waaaaaaaay too bloated!
