Joss Whedon Talks Iron Man's Suits In THE AVENGERS

Joss Whedon sat down and discussed Iron Man's suits in the upcoming superhero blockbuster The Avengers where he addressed why Iron Man goes from the triangle chest piece on his suit back to the circle chest piece.

Joss Whedon chatted a little bit with Empire Magazine about his new movie The Cabin In The Wood, and not surprisingly he was asked about The Avenger. More specifically he was asked about the different suits Iron Man will be wearing in the film. Whedon said that Marvel asked him to give Iron Man a different suit through out the film to continue on with the way they have done it in the past two solo films. He also said that going from the triangle chest piece back to the circle one was his own personal preference, even going as far as to call the triangle one ass.

"They (the suits) will go through some wear and tear. Marvel said, 'We like to see the suits evolve,' and I said, "Great! Then you're going back to the circle because the triangle is ass'. I'm a classicist. The circle has meaning, the triangle does not."

The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård , Samuel L. Jackson and will be released in the US on May 4, 2012 and in the UK on April 26, 2012.

@Sups, he created the element needed. It doesn't need to be in the shape of a triangle for that element to be there...

I kinda don't understand the logic but eh, if circular is what floats his boat then so be it. It'll still be a great movie nonetheless. :)

I hope the new "circle" suit is an emergency suit, because even though the triangle shape is "ass", it represents the power that's keeping Tony alive. I assume Tony's just wearing the same arc reactor from the end of Iron Man 2, though?

Dude! I thought he respected Favreau so much!

I liked the triangle-reactor actually. I just think it looked more modern. The circular piece just seems dated after watching Iron Man 2. Maybe that's just me though.

I agree, I never liked the triangle look either. I prefer the circle.

he's talking about the CHEST PIECE,not the element in his chest itself, that you can't change.
the element and the arc reactor will always be there,it's just the chest piece of the armor what can change.hell, the shape could be a square if Tony wants it :P

Good. The triangle is ass, as well as Iron Man 2. Go Joss.

I suppose what were seeing on the armor could be just the window and the chest plate. Or another way of saying it is, the chest piece in his body could be triangular, while the window in the armor is circular. Just saying.

Changed the wording around in the article to avoid confusion.

Personally I prefer the triangular look only because I think it seperates ironman more from his enemies and war machine and gives him a bit more character , but it's no biggie

I hope we get to see three or four different suits...either for different situations or just because he tears them up. Maybe someday, we'll get a movie where the iron man armor technology goes nano and his body produces it when need be. Would nerd out so hard for that... So has anyone thought of the theory that Howard Stark's flying car (in CATFA) at the Stark expo is using the same technology that the helicarrier uses to fly in Avengers?

I prefer the circle piece over the triangle anyway, but that's just me

what I would love to see is the diamond chest piece
IronDean2099
IronDean2099 - 3/9/2012, 7:28 AM
A triangular shaped chest piece would actually make the whole front plate a bit weaker. Also, his actual reactor in his chest has always been round, just the center of it became a triangle in Iron Man 2. You can see in the Avengers trailer when he takes the suit off so it doesn't really matter about the shape on the armor itself.

hes right! the triangle IS ass!!!

Was basically about to same the same thing as @IronDean

The casing shape is what changes, not the arc reactor.

I agree 100% with Joss. The circle IS Iron Man. The triangle is a new, modern design that was always stupid. I love the circle, and glad it's back. Thank you Joss!

Dont people realise that the triangle is inside a cirle,so you could put any shape on top,its only going to light up,Im sure he just means the armor shape on the front

Circle is better, but those silver bits on the Red/Gold is also ass, thanks for that Joss.

If you picture the triangle on the new suit it doesn't seem right anyway. Personally, I think the triangle looks better on the more streamlined looking suits, ie extremis and Iron Man 2. The round chest piece works better with bulkier suits such as the armor in the Avengers which is based on the modular armor.

The suit also clearly has some sort of rocket boosting stuff applied to the back judging from the trailer. Maybe people can get upset about that too!
