Hugh Jackman On How Russell Crowe Helped Him Get The Part Of Wolverine

Some may know that Russell Crowe was asked to play Logan/Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, a role that eventually went to Hugh Jackman. During an interview with an Australian radio station, Jackman talked about how Crowe helped him get the part.

The Wolverine is gearing up for a release of next year, and we have already seen some cool stuff from it. Between the poster, official stills, and the fact that we will get the trailer early next year people are excited about it. Some people may not know this, but Russell Crowe was asked to play Wolverine in Bryan Singer's first X-Men movie, and turned it down. Hugh Jackman spoke with Triple M 104.9FM, where he attributes Crowe for getting him the part of Logan/Wolverine. "Bryan Singer asked Rusty (Crowe) to do Wolverine, and he said, 'Nah mate I've just done 'Gladiator', it's not for me but you should look at this guy," said Jackman. When you think about Wolverine on screen you automatically think of Jackman. The actor who has brought Wolvie to life is now on his fifth movie as the character, so it would be a little hard to image now how Crowe would have brought him to life.

The Wolverine should be finishing up production soon, and like stated earlier the trailer should be out some time early next year. Bryan Singer has dove back in to the world of X-Men taking over director duties on Days Of Future Past from Matthew Vaughn. For the latest on all things X-Men make sure to check back here at CBM.

jackman's portrayal of wolverine is good but somewhat overrated by the fans...

He's good, to me the problems with the wolverine movie renditions aren't his fault. If Synger knew better he'd use some lotr-like effects to make him smaller and wider.

Jackman is a good actor to me. I remember when I saw the cage fight the first time. As a longtime X-Men fan I can tell it was magical.

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

Maximus would've killed that sh!t!!!! I don't how tall he is in real life but he looks more like wolverine physically. Plus he s got the whole rugby player thing and he can fight. Hackman (haha autocorrect) is overrated and played out. We need new blood. I'm kinda pissed they're pulling the old Singer homo-X-men out of the closet. They had their moment, this is a new universe that's much better than the old. Singer did his gay parable interpretation of the Xmen just like he did with Superman. It is what it is, but don't mix it in with the Vaughn-verse. Singer made poor casting and costume decisions the first time around and what's to prevent him from screwing us again. Regardless of what he says.

Crowe would have been good. Jackman has been fine. But it's time for a new actor and new interpretation of Wolverine.

Jackman has been fine, it's the writing that has killed most of the movies.

Yeah, a lot of you guys are pretty harsh about Jackman's portrayal. While he might not look exactly like the comic version, he's close enough, and like Fogs said, they could've easily made him appear even slightly smaller via special effects, but they decided not to.
And in terms of characterisation, again he's pretty close, but you need to consider that he's not the one writing the scripts, plus he has to tone it down a bit because they always push for that PG-13 rating. If they aimed to make an R-Rated Wolverine, he could definitely step up his game. He's a very good actor, even if has been in a few questionable films.

The two depictions where I could see a similarity in the comic character to Jackman would be Civil War (only a small part to be fair) and Origins (admittedly Origins presents a deeper depiction, but it is considerably darker and more psychological than any of the X-Men movies. Again, a problem with the writers and directors, not Jackman)

Crowe would've been good for sure, I love Jackman in the role though.

ACirca. No one is blaming Hugh Jackman for not being a better Wolverine. We are blaming the filmmakers, producers, directors and studios. That said, High Jackman isnt a terrible Wolverine. but its almost terrible.

adding Crowe to the kill list. Crowe would've been a great Wolvie, its a shame they cast such a fancy lad in the part.

@pointman five movies with poor scripts and direction. He's an actor, he doesn't get to call the shots, he does what he's told and makes the best of it.

I can't believe some people are having a go at Hugh Jackman, Wolverines popularity has sky rocketed since his portrayal. He's as good as Downey Jr is Tony Stark in my opinion. Definitely in the top 5 CBM castings of all-time.

DTor91 - 11/23/2012, 12:05 PM
So X-Men 1 and 2 didn't have a solid portrayal of Wolverine? The best part of both X3 and Wolverine was Hugh Jackman, and even his cameo in First Class was exactly the Wolverine from the comics. I swear, people on this site are never happy with anything. Why even bother watching any comic movie when there will always be something to complain about no matter how minor it is?

I WISH I SAW THE COSTUME THOUGH. NOT YELLOW SPANDEX, BUT JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER COMIC BOOK FILM THAT TRANSLATES A COSTUME FROM COMIC TO LIVE ACTION, THERES WAYS TO DO IT WITHOUT LOOKING CHEESY...

Jackman is awesome, found his perfect role, yes he's a little tall but that's not a huge gripe. He has had shitty direction for most of his last few roles as Logan, that is not his fault. This movie and Days of Future past will be the test to see if he is redeemable before he is technically too old.
