BOX OFFICE: James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Passes $300M Worldwide

After just 10 days of release, Marvel Studios and James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has already passed $300 million at the worldwide box office. After the jump, you'll find details on that and some more specific numbers from North America and much more!

Those of you feeling sore about the fact that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles beat Guardians of the Galaxy to the top spot this weekend at the North American box office should now be able to sleep a little easier, eh? In all seriousness though, the fact that the movie didn't stay on top is largely irrelevent, especially as it clearly has some serious staying power. It's still too early to say what James Gunn's first big budget blockbuster will ultimately end up finishing with worldwide, and it could be some time before we find out due to the fact that it doesn't hit China - a country which could add a huge amount to its final box office haul - until October. The fact is though, there's no way Marvel are regretting their decision to announce a sequel for a 2017 release before this one even hit theaters as some sceptical fans didn't think Guardians of the Galaxy would reach as much as $300 million after its entire run, never mind in just 10 days! What do you think?

Amazing. This pretty much proves that Marvel can introduce the weirdest, most out-there concepts imaginable, and as long as they find a way to make it appealing, people will pay to see it. This opens up even more doors for what we could see on the big screen, Marvel or otherwise. ANYONE who is a comic book fan should be thrilled about this movie's success.

Not to open up the can of worms again, but I'll never understand how someone can get in trouble for spoilers for movies that haven't come out yet...and then get faced with accusations of not having seen afore-mentioned movies. Obviously I'm missing something.

@SauronsBANE- It's a good thing because if people are flocking to see this then they should pretty much be able to watch anything no matter how ridiculous it looks or sounds (Which is good news for ANTMAN) Just as long as it works

1 billion is out of reach, but maybe 700 and that would be insane from a new franchise of not well know heroes

@CerealKiller, Probably not. We've gotten spoiled by so many $1 billion hits the past few years, and it's easy to forget how insanely difficult to reach that level. It needs the perfect storm of a high opening weekend, plenty of IMAX/3D sales, people willing to pay for repeat viewings, and serious staying power. Still, it doesn't even NEED to hit $1 billion. The sequel's already green-lit, and I think anywhere from $400-$500 million would be a massive success.

I won't break a billion. $600-700 tops would be my guess, which is still outstanding, It's weird, as we won't know the final box office numbers until November.
