Kicking off with Iron Man in 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it would come to be known has gone from strength to strength as we've seen from the success of Guardians of the Galaxy this summer. Now, with a worldwide total of over $7 billion at the box office (it crossed that mark earlier this week), Marvel Studios' movies are close to becoming the biggest franchise of all-time as they set their sights on the Harry Potter series (which has earned over $7.7 billion, but will add to that when Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is released in 2016). Before then of course, Avengers: Age of Ultron will open next year and as the first movie earned over $1.5 billion, it wouldn't be at all surprising if the sequel reaches upwards of $2 billion, giving it a good lead and potentially making it the first series to ever pass $8 billion. James Bond is the third biggest franchise with $6.2 billion, but it looks as if the future of global dominance at the box office lies squarely with the Disney owned Marvel Studios. Excelsior! Please harry potter made most of that movie from the last two installments as it was the end if a franchise. If marvel had a final installment it would make more than harry potter and james bond put together. Don't anyone argue with me on this

By the time the Fantastic Beasts TRILOGY is wrapped. Harry Potter will still be in the lead. The average of their movies gross are higher than Marvel. And once the trilogy pulls in some great numbers, WB wont stop there. We'll be getting more Harry Potter spin-offs which I can wait for, more so than any "marvel" movie.

It's amazing how many comic book properties are on the list of top grossing franchises. Both Batman and Spiderman are near the top as well. This really is the golden age for CMB fans.

Not suprising in the slightest, especially consider they make the most movies out of any other franchise at the moment. Even if the movies barely earnt anything they'd still be the highest grossing franchise from the amount of movies being released as long as each made a profit.

As for AOU box office i think it'll probably be around $1.8bn, not sure it'll pass $2bn however either way Marvel will be the highest grossing franchise after AOU has aired.

Even the combined DCU will be behind by around 5-6bn when its combined so they'll never be able to catch up unless they start releasing more films than Marvel.

And Vanilla is the most popular ice cream......I like the MCU but I wish it wasnt with Disney. Makes some story lines and events impossible under Disney's "morality" clause. I also feel it waters down some story lines we have seen. All I know is if a major character does not die facing Ultron like in the most classic of Ultron story lines I will be disappointed. Otherwise I am glad Marvel is profiting money-wise from the partnership.

Yes it is entirely fair. The MCU has the same level of over-lapping characters, settings and plotlines as Harry Potter and tells a similar connected storyline. It would actually be incredibly stupid if it wasnt classed as a franchise.

I see where you're coming from with Disney being affiliated with Marvel. I mean, we're talking about the same Disney that owns Disney World, Mickey Mouse, etc. But I don't think Disney's morality won't be getting in the way anytime soon. Looking back on The Avengers, how it was supposedly almost rated R due to the scene in which Coulson got impaled by Loki's scepter. But I think the movie that pushed how far Marvel could go in terms of violence would be The Winter Soldier. The movie even gained a little buzz over the violence. Guardians of the Galaxy pushed it too in terms of dialogue.

I'm pretty sure Ultron will be the Ultron we know in the comics. But my main complaint isn't about Disney's morality. It's about Captain America. Joss is a great writer, but Captain America was barely even significant to the plot at all in regards to The Avengers and I'd really hate to see Cap put in that position again, especially after seeing The Winter Soldier.

I remember in the 80's when there had been like a Million DC tv shows over the last 30 years (IGN ironically just had an article on them) and umpteen movies and Marvel fans at the comicbook shop I frequented were always butthurt and saying someday they wish they could have good movies and TV shows. Now, I understand the feeling. Amazing how business really is all about cycles and hills and valleys.
