More Big Changes At Marvel Studios As The "Creative Committee" Is Brought To An End

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Marvel Studios will now operate under the watch of Disney instead of Marvel Entertainment. Another big behind the scenes shake up has occurred, with the Creative Committee (made up of names like Joe Quesada) disbanded by Kevin Feige...

According to Birth.Movies.Death, Marvel Studios' Creative Committe has been disbanded this week following the severing of ties between the studio and Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter. For those of you unfamiliar with the group, it was apparently made up of names like Alan Fine, Brian Michael Bendis, Dan Buckley, and Joe Quesada. Their job was to give notes and weigh in on Marvel productions while they were being adapted. Their input was clearly not appreciated by Kevin Feige (because, let's face it, he hardly needs the help of someone like Bendis) as now it will just be him, Louis D'Esposito, and Victoria Alonso making key creative decisions.

So, why scrap what sounds like a relatively useful group of people to have around? According to the site, this committee was something of a burden, offering up "notes that are pedestrian, motivated by 'save the cat' story logic and sometimes a drag on creativity." Perhaps their greatest crime were being responsible for the script notes which led to Edgar Wright deciding to depart Ant-Man, while their lateness with such revisions would often play havoc with a movie's development. In other words, good f**king riddance! Another interesting titbit revealed by the site is that "Ike, with a background in toys, believes girl toys do not sell and thus vetoed them again and again," and that explains the lack of Black Widow merchandise.

All in all, it feels like a new day is dawning at Marvel Studios. Just how much of a different we'll notice as moviegoers remains to be seen, but there's no denying the fact that Kevin Feige appears to be making all the right decisions. What do you guys think?

@ckal

"Nothing good comes from Joe Quesada or Brian Michael Bendis."

Maybe not from Quesada but Bendis....yeah, that's not true.

I wouldn't mind them finding a way to keep Quesada involved. I always like his takes on the characters when he's interviewed.

Yes!! Quesada has been dragging things down since the beginning! Very exciting news, indeed.

Feige is pretty much illuminati confirmed by now.

I liked a lot the Avengers run by Bendis, also Daredevil and Ultimate Spider-Man. I think the man would do some interesting things if he ever goes to DC. I would pay to read a Batman by Bendis or a Justice League by Bendis.

I would put Bendis = Geoff Johns but I mean it in the way that both writers are awesome

At first glance I don't like the sound of this but if there revisions and suggestions were actually lackluster and late then yeah they needed to be gone.

Good Joe Quesada sucks big time and Bendis hasn't done anything good in forever in my opinion so no big lost its for the best really.

There's one thing that really worries me about this. With Bendis and Quesada and others around, these guys are writers. They understand the nuances of storytelling, and weaving stories through one another cohesively.

Feige, D'Esposito, and Alonso...none have ever written anything. I don't know what their storytelling capabilities are, and I think that is an important part of being able to Shepherd this universe..

Take a moment for this to sink in. The movies Marvel has been doing, have been held back by this "creative" team.

This excites me to see where things go from here.

Good because this creative team if just not working all that well.
The sequels are terrible (IM 2 and 3, Thor 2 as much a I enjoyed Avengers 2, it was disappointing) aside from CA: TWS of course which was a gem.

There's no creativity with most of the sequels, even Ant Man I feel let itself down with just excessive and distracting humour.

Film storytelling is MILES ahead of what is happening in comics right now. There were all-time greats like Chris Claremont, Jack Kirby, and Alan Moore, but no one of that caliber is working today - at least not at DC or Marvel.

Feige is right to eject them in favor of filmmakers. I just wish he had done it before Edgar Wright was driven away (though I haven't seen Ant-Man, so I can't comment on the ultimate quality of the movie).

Vindication for those of us who've been saying Marvel movies are mediocre films for 12 year olds.

Now we know why.

Problem is, I don't think Feige is all that much better.

mkay, it only took 2 cinematic phases to shake those people; I wonder if they can get their hands to work on a great Ghost Rider film.

To be honest, I am curious what would happen if they regain ALL their characters back, at this point sounds pretty tough to introduce big groups like the X-Men and F4, but still... this guy is not getting any younger unfortunately, so new franchises need to be set though

The Emperor has permanently dissolved the senate. The regional governors now have direct control over their territories.

Also @MercwithMouth I think the point is the new committee would NOT be interfering with story notes. They might just comment on something if it sounds too expensive or crosses some kind of company line. I think the issue before was shitty writers were supplying their two cents on better writers' work.

This could mean the end of the cookie cutter storytelling that's plagued a lot of MCU films of late or could mean even more pedestrian work.

Here's hoping it's not the latter.

I guess this is pretty good news for those worried about "creative" circumstances surrounding these films. I'm actually interested to know/see where their cinematic universe will go storytelling wise from here on out. I think that it's pretty up in the air though in regards to exactly what input some of these guys had towards some of the movies. I also hope that none of this nonsense affects the Netflix univverse in any form or fashion. Although I've only seen Daredevil I'm loving what I see and if everything else resembles the same energy placed into that series I'm good.
