Mark Millar Talks Millarworld Movies; AMERICAN JESUS And KICK-ASS 2 To Shoot This Year

It was revealed last year that work is finally moving ahead on an adaptation of Mark Millar and Peter Gross' American Jesus, a story which sees a 12 year old boy discover that he is the returned Jesus Christ. Talking to The Daily Record recently, the prolific writer and creator has this to say about the big screen version of the series. "If you are doing a movie about the return of Jesus as the Bible prophesied in the Book of Revelation, you have got to do it straight and treat it with dignity. I’m not taking the piss. It will be treated like a proper film."

I have never been cool. I am a Catholic and go to mass. A lot of people are surprised because much of my work is irreverent and expect the same with American Jesus. But I want it to be a beautiful film," he added. "A film about the returned Jesus Christ has amazing artistic potential. Jesus shows up in the middle of the financial crisis, America is in turmoil and the Eurozone is collapsing. They are quite apocalyptic times that we are living in with the gap between rich and poor."

Another of Millar's projects which is currently garnering a lot of interest is his collaboration with Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons on The Secret Service. Why? Well, it obviously involves two of the biggest names in comics, but Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn is also involved with the planned adaptation of the series. "We shoot Kick-Ass 2 and American Jesus this summer. Then Matthew and I have Secret Service, which is a nerdy James Bond," he revealed. "We came up with this idea of a wee nerd who becomes a gentleman spy, ditching his trainers for his Savile Row suits and being taught how to speak properly."

"The reason he gets chosen is that a guy like that is disposable. I am a massive Bond fan and Secret Service is like My Fair Lady meets James Bond. I am halfway through the comic and Matthew and I are halfway through the script. There is a good role for a 50-something actor to play an older gentleman spy training this young kid. There are not a lot of tough actors in that age group but you would never believe Colin Firth or Hugh Grant in a fight scene. We are bouncing names around."

The first volume of American Jesus is still available to buy and The Secret Service #1 goes on sale this April. Which Millarworld movie are you most looking forward to seeing? I still haven't read American Jesus, but it sounds like it has potential to be a good film, also I honestly doubt that Kick-Ass 2 will film this year, sometimes the things Millar say just sounds like a load of crap, lol. But I am looking forward to reading The Secret Service and Super Crooks.

I was hoping another kick-ass movie would be made. The first one was funny and action packed.

If "American Jesus" gets made, it will either: (a) never find a distributor; (b) bomb at the box office; or (c) go straight to video. Religious fundamentalists, or the fear of them, will ensure that it meets one of these potential fates.

Kick-Ass 2 can't wait!

The component that made the first Kick-Ass so great was the combination of Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman. Niether of those two are coming back for the sequel.

I just can't take anything that Millar says seriously. He's been saying "Kick Ass 2 will shoot this year, trust me!" since 2010.

I imagine what little pull he had with the studios is now gone because he has no mute button.

I'm not a big fan of Millar's work. Red Son and the Ultimates stuff I enjoyed as well as American Jesus. It's just the guy I don't like. Think's he an arrogant, outspoken self hyping idiot. But I will be fair and say he does write stuff that people read and buy and seems to do some good things. I just wish he wouldn't say stuff like this. That they will be filming in the summer becuase I feel like we'll all be sitting here in the summer reading another article about how they'll be filming in the fall and so on. Mark should just keep quiet until something offical is announced.

I wonder if Matthew Vaughn ever gets tired of Mark Millar throwing his name around.

@Slaine: Matthew Vaughn and Mark Millar have worked together on exactly ONE PROJECT, that being "Kick Ass".
That is your idea of a TEAM who have worked on Many projects together? Just because Mark Millar says that he and Vaughn are doing many projects doesn't make it a fact.
Vaughn and Jane Goldman are more of a team than he and Millar are and Goldman has openly said that they are not doing Kick Ass 2.

Rumor has it that Vaughn and Goldman got sick of him on Kick Ass becuase 1. Would never keep his mouth shut 2. wanted more changes like the book and 3. He's a self hyping obnoxious prick. Apparently he pissed them off more by "claiming" he was involved with X-Men: First Class. That's the real reason why there has been no Kick Ass 2 becuase Goldman and Vaughn can't stand him and First Class was a hit which he was trying to take credit for by saying Kick Ass launched Vaugn and Goldman. Someone needs to give this dude a reality check. Also agree with whoever said whatever pull he had with the studio is waning. Though I doubt he had any to begin with. He wouldn't be near any film propeties today if he Vaughn and Goldman hadnt thought doing Kick Ass
