When it was revealed that The Incredible Hulk's Ed Norton would not return for The Avengers, the hunt for a new Bruce Banner began. However, both Marvel Studios and the director of the superhero ensemble had one particular actor in mind. "Mark was my dream choice and I had my heart set on him," reveals Joss Whedon. "I wanted a completely fresh take on the character so I went to Marvel very early on and said, ‘I know the guy who would be a great Bruce Banner’ and they said, ‘Unless it’s Mark Ruffalo, we really don’t know.’ and I was like ‘What?!’ I just froze and said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding. You did not just say that,’ and I showed them my list that I had in my wallet with his name at the top and they were completely on board."

"’The Avengers”’ isn’t the type film that I’ve done in the past or that I am usually invited to do," laughs Mark Ruffalo. "I was a little nervous about it because when Joss and I first met about the role there wasn’t a script. I thought a lot about Iron Man. I thought about what Robert Downey Jr. did with that part—he is one of my hero actors. I really loved what Robert did; he reinvented the genre. It made me feel like I could fit into that world with whatever it is I do. I had one meeting with Joss, who I liked instantly, so between him and Robert I was in." He adds, "What appealed to both Joss and I about the character is that he would have a common man sort of feel to him and possess this world-weary charm. We also agreed he should have a sense of humor about his situation. Based on the last incarnation of The Incredible Hulk, there was the promise that Banner may actually have a little control over the Behemoth. We wanted him to be fun and interesting as Banner and awesome as Hulk.”"

The actor comparing the role to, "this generation's Hamlet" is something we have heard countless times since it was revealed that he would play Bruce Banner at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con. Executive producer Jeremey Latcham had this to say about exactly that. "Mark Ruffalo is very funny and when he first got cast he said, ‘Bruce Banner is like his generation’s Hamlet. Everyone has to take a shot at it; it’s just required reading now for actors. I thought it was a funny way of looking at it because it really is a tough character and there have been a lot of great actors who have had a go at it. Mark really brings a lot of humanity to Bruce Banner and I think that his way into it is really to explore the human side of the character, who is a nice guy but very troubled."

"Besides Robert, Mark is probably the person I spent the most time with in pre-production," reveals Joss Whedon. "We talked about anger and how it manifests so we could get The Hulk away from being this roaring creature. Bruce Banner has given up on the idea that he can cure his anger problems and is just trying to manage it and focus all his energy on helping other people. He doesn’t want to be the center of attention and of course, he becomes the center of attention when he joins the team." As for where we find Bruce at the beginning of the film, Ruffalo reveals: "Joss and I thought it would be cool if we found Banner at a leprosy colony in India where there’s so much suffering that it would be almost impossible to get angry at anything in life that would bring on the transformation into The Hulk."

Looking forward to seeing my favorite character done right for once. I liked the Incredible Hulk, but it failed to get at what the Hulk truly should be.

I have a feeling I'm going to like Ruffalo as Banner more than Norton, who I also thought was great. I don't know why, but it seems like Mark has a certain charm to him as Banner that I just don't see in anyone else who's played the role. Can't wait til May 4th.

Mark will do a great job I'm sure. I like what I have seen from the trailers. I really think Joss will balance out all of the characters well. He handled Firefly, and Serenity very well with 9 main characters. So I think he can handle 6-8 depending on how you look at it.

If the trailers and tv spots are any indication, we are in for a treat with this incarnation of the Hulk.

Norton was awesome as Banner. I would've preferred to keep him in the role, but stuff always got to happen. Still, no one really cares about Banner cause it's the Hulk that really matters. Can't wait for this film.

I love it, thats exactly where Bruce was at the end of The Incredible Hulk

I just watched the movie again the other day & it was all about Bruce trying to cure the Hulk but over the course of the movie he was starting to realise maybe he should just try to control that part of his personality & thats precisely where we left him at the end of the Incredible Hulk. Its a perfect continuation, I was just worried they were going to ignore the Incredible Hulk altogether but its obvious they arent

Seriously, Im slightly overhpyed for the Avengers, I hope it isnt a disappointment, it CANT BE for everyone's sake!

Mark Ruffalo's great, but I just can't see him as Bruce Banner no matter how I look at it and I have a bad feeling that's going to nag at me throughout the movie.
Edward Norton was the best in my opinion and I still can't figure out why they dropped him for Ruffalo (like trading gold for silver).

BANA HULK-PUDGY AND VERY EMO, DEEP BUT TOO DEEP..

NORTON HULK-BETTER, MUCH MORE "BIXBY" RIPPED SURFER BODY AND THE ACTION WAS THERE...

RUFFA HULK-THIS IS WHAT A COMIC GUY SEES, IF IT WORKS WE WILL HAVE JUST ENOUGH IN EVERY ASPECT TO MAKE THIS A DEFINITIVE CINEMATIC REPRESENTATION OF THE HULK...

GUNSMITH
GUNSMITH - 4/1/2012, 7:28 PM
MY QUESTION IS WILL HE HAVE MORE DIALOGUE THAN "HULK SMASH"?
GUNSMITH
GUNSMITH - 4/1/2012, 7:41 PM
I DID LOVE HIS TAKE, I WISH I COULD HAVE SEEN WHERE NORTON WOULD'VE TAKEN IT...

WHY ISNT HE NOT REPRISING HIS ROLE? I FOUND THIS:

Marvel sent Hitfix this statement. Sounds like it wasn’t about money…

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

He probably won't top Bixby, but I don't think Ruffalo won't have a hard time leaving Norton behind in the dust. I didn't really have an opinion back when the movie was out - it wasn't a bad match, but Norton's Banner seemed way too comfortable scoffing and being cynical. He portrayed him as a coward, but an assertive coward. Leterrier is at fault too, though, considering how the male protagonists in his films seem to be those who depend on others' compassion.

They shoulda kept Eric Bana. He did a good job in a not so good film.
TheGambitFreak
TheGambitFreak - 4/1/2012, 8:06 PM
I loved Incredible Hulk, it was funnywhen it needed to be funny, sad when it needed to be, action packed, etc. But Banner is one of the most emotional characters out there that requires expressions and deep character devolopment, something I believe Edward Norton can do graciously (See Red Dragon) but he did not even at the slightest bit try to "act" he just read his lines and walked and yelled when he had too. I mean, he was so bland! Bana was better, Ruffalo will own it.

May 4th, The Avengers are born!

"NORTON IS AN AWESOME ACTOR, HOW WOULD HE NOT FIT IN TO THE AVENGERS?"

Because his ego and wanting to control everything wouldn't work well with this type of ensemble cast. He wouldn't get enough attention. I'm with the "Norton sucked as Banner" crowd.

Norton can be amazing, but he was incredibly bland as Banner. I felt the same way I did watching him in The Italian Job, like he was just there to collect a paycheck.
rockerdude22
rockerdude22 - 4/1/2012, 9:14 PM
Yeah, I feel that is was for the best that Norton didn't come back. From all the reports of the cast getting along so well and being so supportive of each other, I feel like Norton's ego would have brought that down. I feel the great chemistry between the cast is gonna show on screen

The only Banner I really didn't like was Eric Bana. And not by his fault, the script was poor with all those childhood issues.

Ruffalo will do fine.
