Jeremy Renner And Kevin Feige Look Back On The Actor Being Cast As Hawkeye

The Avengers star reveals how exactly he ended up being cast in the superhero ensemble, while both Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige comment on just how impressive Renner was in regards to performing his own stunts.

"Avengers was the first big movie I signed on to," Jeremy Renner told The Hollywood Reporter. "It was something Zak Penn was the writer on; he's a friend. Then I met [Marvel Studios president and Avengers producer] Kevin Feige, and Zak was really pushing, saying 'You guys have got to hire Renner.'"

"I had a general meeting with him just when Locker was gaining steam," Marvel Studios President and executive producer, Kevin Feige recalls. "He doesn't just have the guts to do the stunts but also a level of knowledge and skill that's impressive. He can even talk about 'pick' points -- where a wire attaches to your body when you're pulled through the air." The scene in the trailer which sees the actor leaping backwards and shooting an arrow towards the camera is one particularly memorable sequence for Feige. "That was him, not a stuntman. And it was impressive. He's got this great intensity and is very focused."

Adds director Joss Whedon: "He's an amazing fighter -- his fight work is wonderful: precise, heroic, and you seldom have to double him. But one day he just turned wrong and his whole body shut down. He could not do anything. He was in enormous pain, and we had to shut that sequence down and shoot it a couple of weeks later."

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk

He is good and all,but I don't know what they were thinking casting him in the new Bourne movie. Matt Damon is Jason Bourne.

Renner was so good in the Hurtlocker and was great in The Town. He brings such and intensity to his roles.

Hulkbuster84@ he isn't playing Bourne in the new one. He is playing another agent with the same issues as Bourne from my understanding his story is taking place at the same time as Jason's.

Ugh Zak Penn, I still shudder when I hear the fact that he originally wrote "The Avenegers"

Interviews are not dark and gritty enough. Unless Nolan does 'em.

Before saying this let me say that I think Ruffalo will own as Banner/Hulk...

But, part of me still wishes Norton was in this. Mainly from a continuity standpoint. It would be nice to have that connection to TIH. It will be interesting to see how The Avengers handles Banner's introduction. I wonder if they will try to connect the first film to this in some way. Maybe a reference to Betty or General Ross. Maybe a reference to Culver University. It will definitely be interesting.

Initially I didn't care to see Hawkeye in this movie but after watching some trailers with quick scenes of Renner as Hawkeye... I soon realized that he would be a badass in the role. I think he'll do great!

Renner isn't playing Jason Bourne. It's a new character, supposedly more dangerous than Bourne. Matt Damon is still Jason Bourne. Renner is playing Aaron Cross.

Renner was fantastic in "Swat"! I think he's an incredible actor and I for one am highly anticipating watching his portrayal of Hawkeye. I was a huge Hawkeye fan when I was about 10 but there weren't alot of comics featuring him back in the early 80's. Sucked.

@BmanHall uhh its a direct port of one of his Ultimates costumes... not to mention it makes sense for a SHIELD Agent, looks better on screen, and looks better in general tbh.
