Kevin Feige Reveals Who Owns The Rights To Quicksilver And Scarlet Witch

Well, this is interesting! The lads over at Hey U Guys asked Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige about which studio owns the rights to the two mutants and his answer may just surprise you! He also offers updates on Ant-Man and much more.

Marvel Studios presents "Marvel Avengers Assemble"—the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

"It's a little complicated," says Kevin Feige when asked about Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in the above video interview with Hey U Guys at the European premiere of Avengers Assemble earlier today. "If they want to use them in an X-Men movie they could, if we want to use them in an Avengers movie we could." Well, I don't think any of us were expecting that! He also reveals that the same applies for the Skrulls (more than likely due to their connection to the Fantastic Four) but that doesn't come as too huge of a surprise. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are the children of Magneto and originated in the X-Men line of comics as a part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. This resulted in many fans reaching the assumption that they would never get a chance to appear in a future instalment of The Avengers ...thankfully, the door now seems wide open for Marvel Studios to bring them to the big screen! Be sure to watch the full interview above for some more interesting titbits on their plans, including a promising update on Ant-Man.

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk

grif I don't mind you hating everything honestly but they are actually pretty cool characters. It would be really great to have them be introduced to the Avengers and have the Avengers and Xmen team up film. But with the rights the way it is that can't happen... :(

They wont clear more than 400 million from this Avengers movie.

The rights to the X-men are worth 5 times that at least.

Love we finally got clarity on Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver, the most interesting bit of info is Feige basically confirmed that that the Antman film will not be be the June 27th 2014 film. Would have to assume that means three Marvel studios films for 2014 and the mystery June 2th film being Dr.Strange or Shield. He has kept hinting at liking Dr. Strange for the phase 2 of Avengers so my guess is that franchise starting now.

Avengers 2- Antman-Ironman-Thor-Incredible Hulk-Captain America-Black Widow-Hawkeye-Dr.Strange-War Machine(Either to kill off or utilize as Cheadle has confirmed he has two films left on his contract)- and Falcon as Feige has hinted on him joing CA 2.

Would LOVE it to have those extra additions

@Ghostfire, I'm not sure about Sony, but their contracts with Fox haven't changed. They're the same contracts they had since the early 90s.And they are pretty airtight.

A year or two ago, when Disney was looking into reclaiming those rights, portions of their contract with Fox were put online.

I'm not sure how much money Marvel received when they initially sold the X-Men rights(they were hurting for cash then), but the contracts were vague, yet specific.

They stated that Fox would own the film rights to the X-Men until they decided to relinquish them.Disney found that out when they tried to reclaim them. That's what he's talking about in the video when he says the contracts are very specific. They're specific in how long Fox can hold on to them. There's no way around it.

I can't say the same for Sony.Remember, Ghost Rider was released in early 2007, but Sony would have lost the rights had they not started production on a film by late 2010.But look at Fox and Daredevil. They released the Daredevil movie in early 2003 and Elektra in early 2005.Sony was in danger of losing Ghost Rider because they hadn't used the rights in almost 4 years, yet Fox hasn't used the Daredevil rights in over 7 years and they're in no danger of losing them. The last Fantastic Four was released the same year as Ghost Rider, but those rights aren't in any danger of reverting, either.

It's because Fox hammer out clear, concise deals for the rights that means they can't be take away unless they give them back.

Now, on to the Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch business.Regarding the use of characters in Fox produced movies, they were very vague in the wording of the contract. It stated that Fox would be able to use any X-Men character(they listed some names) and any character associated with the X-Men created before and after the contracts were made that enables them to tell the story they want to tell.

Because Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are not X-Men and weren't named specifically in the contracts, Marvel still owns the rights to those characters, but because they are closely associated with the X-Men, Fox has access to them.

Same goes for Viper. While she's more closely associated with Captain America and the Avengers, she also shares history with Wolverine. There was a casting call/character breakdown for the Wolverine floating around a while ago, and Viper was one of the characters in the movie.

So, that's where it stands.Fox has these characers until they give them up and they can use any non mutant who frequently appears in an X-Men story, as long as that character doesn't have it's own franchise.

No news here. I've been saying this for YEARS, particularly on this very site!

The Scarlet Witch appeared in both the '94 Iron Man cartoon as well as the '99 Avengers animated series! If Fox had wanted to use them in the X-Men films, they would have by now, although it's a moot point - Quicksilver and SW are both Avengers characters who never even wanted to be a part of the Brotherhood to begin with! It's not like they have all that much history with the X-men!

Hell, even Mastermind, Blob and Unus were left out of the Brotherhood in the first X-Men film. The only reason for Fox to use Pietro and Wanda would be to spite Marvel, which it appears now is officially a non - issue anyway!
superotherside
superotherside - 4/19/2012, 4:44 PM
Those worried about SW and Quicksilver would be like their Ultimate counter parts:

None of the Marvel films have done that. Some of the story has been taken from certain Ultimate ideas but the core characters are all from 616. I doubt they're going to start any time soon at doing this. :D

What are you talking about?

"you underestimate the power of the "action figure""

____________________________________________________

"and somehow i doubt the X Men film rights are worth 2 billion.."

^^^ Fox has already pocketed Half a Billion in PROFIT from the x-men franchise. As long as they produce X-films they will hold the rights indefinitely. They stand to make a lot more in the decades to come.

So yes I would say to reclaim those rights it would cost about 2 billion.

@tazmaniak
Thanks bud! Last time I heard, Fox extended their contract for the xmen rights. The previous contract was for 10 years, and the extention gives them about 5 more, give or take. After that, if Fox wants to keep the right they have to negotiate with Disney. Contracts have expiration dates, so its not like Fox will own them forever. Thanks again.

Gotta love knowledgeable interviewers.

As for the Scarlet Witch/ Quicksilver thing, that's quite interesting. Hypothetically, I wonder if they and 20th Century Fox could use the same actors if they both decided to use these characters. Personally, I don't have an enormous amount of knowledge about these Wanda and Pietro, but I think that they are so defined by having Magneto as their father that it doesn't make sense to me to introduce them in the MCU if he can't exist there.
