Deadline reveals that early box office estimates have already seen
Marvel's The Avengers break records in the few territories it was released in earlier today. The film has already made an estimated $8M in total after opening in Australia ($6M), Taiwan ($1.2M) and New Zealand ($700K). This is Australia's second highest opening day of all time (behind only the final
Harry Potter film) and the highest ever for a Marvel/Disney movie. In Taiwan, Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble has taken the accolade of being the biggest Wednesday opening in the country, the biggest opening day of 2012 so far (an amazing 173% above
Battleship) and the second biggest opening day for any Marvel film. With the retitled
Avengers Assemble set to be released in the UK and several other locations tomorrow, we'll be sure to keep you up to date with the performance of a film which now looks set to easily be Marvel's biggest hit yet. It's worth noting that
Battleship has already made well over $100M internationally before being released in the US, so one can only speculate just how well it will end up doing before May 4th.
