MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS Passes $800 Million Worldwide; $1 Billion By Sunday Looks Likely

Marvel's The Avengers will cross the $800 million mark today, making that $1 billion prediction that many scoffed at even more likely than previously imagined. Only Avatar reached the same figure this quickly...

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Marvel's The Avengers will today gross $800 million worldwide, making that $1 billion by Sunday prediction a guarantee...well, depending on how Dark Shadows ends up performing at the box office that is. The Tim Burton helmed film is its only real competition this weekend, although the mostly negative reviews are sure to have an impact as they did with the box office performances of Green Lantern and John Carter (tracking currently has a domestic opening of $35 million to $40 million). Yesterday saw the Joss Whedon helmed superhero ensemble cross $775.4 million, and no other film besides James Cameron's Avatar has managed to reach $1 billion this quickly, although The Avengers will need to do so by Sunday in order to achieve the same record. Do you think it will manage to hit that number by then? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place. It is however worth noting that some analysts are being far more conservative in their estimates, although the mention of "at least" $950 million is still a very positive sign.

BlackWidow, Boxofficemojo.com are expecting it to finish with about $450M+ domestically and about $1.2B+ world wide. So, World wide it will definitely pass TDK, Domestically is only a mild maybe.

It made over 200 million domestically alone opening weekend, I don't see how it won't make the same amount world wide over the weekend, with nothing big opening except for Dark Shadows, which has been getting pretty poor/mixed reviews.

True. But don't underestimate the Burton/Depp followers, which include the emo/Hot topic kids.

I'm gonna go see it again this weekend.

The DC Fanboy part of me is kicking myself for helping it get closer to beating TDK...

But then the sane, normal part of me kicks in and says "Grow up, it's just a movie. Enjoy."

Good news, for those who wanted either this to fail will need to thank this movie as this will no doubt get other properties off the ground.

Secondly the same goes the other way round not supporting TDKR and TASM is just as bad, as TDK put CBM's on the film map, where they were taken seriously as films.

Remember not supporting one CBM is not supporting them all, as if one of these major properties flops, movie execs will pull their money, audiences decline and the less CBM action we as fans get.

I can't wait to see the impact this has on Spidey and Batman. This may renew the CBM passion in the public boosting the significant earning both are certain to make.
Knightrider
Knightrider - 5/10/2012, 4:28 PM
@iLoveMarvelAndDc They might be able to get back some of the under performing ones such as maybe DD and FF, but Spider-Man is a no chance, he has made Sony Billions, like even if they gave Sony every last penny the Avengers has made it wouldn't cover what Spider-Man made in his first trilogy let alone his new set of movies.

I think, what could be the best shot of getting Spider-Man is a profit share deal, where for use of the Spider-Man character in an later Avengers film, they give SOny 5% of Avenger profits.

My only issue there though is timeline, such as The Amazing Spider-Man would have to be Pre - Avengers, as New York isn't destroyed, depending if they agree a deal they could set TASM 2 post - Avengers, but that could take some explaining, but is possible.

Great news. This should help other properties come alive. This came at the perfect time too, helped boost the genre during an unsteady time for CBM's.
