Disney UK Comments On AVENGERS ASSEMBLE Blu-Ray Controversy

Talking about both the apparent censorship of Agent Coulson's death scene and the lack of Joss Whedon's "Director's Commentary" on the Avengers Assemble Blu-ray, a Disney spokesperson confirms that there are no plans to release an altered version with any additional special features.

Disney UK have finally spoken out about the controversy surrounding the UK release of Avengers Assemble on Blu-ray. Talking to Home Cinema Choice, Lydia Rodrigues (Disney UK's home entertainment spokesperson) had this to say about reports earlier today that Agent Coulson's death had been censored, removing the tip of Loki's spear which protrudes from his chest. It appears as if the part of the confusion could be down to the fact that UK critics - myself included - were shown a US print of the film before its theatrical release at the end of April.

"There’s been no censorship, no foul play. The version of Marvel’s Avengers Assemble on Blu-ray disc in the UK is the same as the version shown theatrically. It really is. The simple fact is for a 12 certificate film in the UK, that scene was deemed inappropriate. So Marvel Studios chose to remove the spear tip digitally."

One question which has plagued fans is why exactly Joss Whedon's "Director's Commentary" wasn't included in the UK release of Avengers Assemble. Disney had reportedly claimed that it was down to it being recorded too late to be included on the disc, and that does indeed seem to be the case - not that it will make those missing out feel any better at this point - because of some fairly technical sounding reasons.

"That was a bit of a disappointment. Our DLT (Digital Linear Tape, required to replicate the disc) had to be delivered one month earlier than that required for the US pressing. So we missed out. We wanted it too."

However, there are currently no plans to release any special editions in future which would include the commentary as they understandably don't consider that to be fair to UK fans. They surprisingly DO condone importing a US copy (which is region-free and features both the "Director's Commentary" and additional special features) despite the fact that it will ultimately make a dent in how well Avengers Assemble sells in the UK.

"That’s been the subject of heated debate here (at Disney UK), but we don’t think we can really ask fans who have bought this version to buy another just to obtain the commentary. So at the moment we are thinking it won’t be released. We also know that hardcore fans with Blu-ray players are probably going to end up buying the US release which has the commentary. The American Blu-ray is region-free. We don’t think we can ask people to buy both versions."

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures Marvel’s The Avengers--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Supposedly the spear tip was removed from the UK theatrical release. So, naturally the UK home release contained that version. Therefore, no censoring to the home release.

@SaintSpidey67Re The home UK release wasn't censored. The theatrical UK release was. I had to read that quote from the article twice, the way it was worded confused me the first time.

The home UK release wasn't specifically censored. It contained an already censored theatrical release. So, would the proper term be "not directly censored"?

If someone outside of Marvel removed the spear tip or ordered that the spear tip be removed, it would be censorship, it would be censorship. However, if Marvel decided to remove the spear tip to get a specific rating, that's not censorship.

I am not from the UK but this is still bs. "The simple fact is for a 12 certificate film in the UK, that scene was deemed inappropriate."
Then why did they show it in the movie theater??? Makes no sense

What about the danish blu-ray release then? Im from Denmark and i know for a fact that i saw a spear tip all three times i wathced it in theaters, but when i bought it on blu-ray i was surprised to see that the spear tip was gone... And im no critic!

To me it kind of destroyed the impact that scene had in theaters!

I saw this in the cinema in the UK and the spear tip was definitely there. Watched the blu ray this afternoon and whilst it doesn't stop me enjoying the film it is noticeable. I couldn't give a rat's ass about the commentary personally, never listen to them any way.

Ah, Disney... The brazilian edition has no director's commentary also. It seems Marvel and Mickey's house were to anxious to make more money!

I live in the US, but it still frustrates me that overseas fans will miss out on stuff like Wheadon's commentary. The lady said that it was because the DL tape had to be delivered a month earlier in the UK... you'd think they would plan around that to ensure the commentary could be added :/

What about through an update, blu rays do that nowadays don't they? I mean I seriously don't mind that the commentary isn't there (I can find an alternative way - it's called the internet I think) However if Disney doesn't give it to us through an update, they are some lazy [frick]ers... I'll be honest, I would've pirated the hell out of this movie if I didn't like it, but guess what? I decided to buy the whole MCU blu ray boxse insteand, so that tells you something ...

If CBM decides to remove part of a comment I make, that is censorship. If I decide to remove part of a comment I make, it is called editing or changing my mind. ;-)
