Kevin Feige On Iron Man's Role In THE AVENGERS 2 And How STAR WARS Impacts Marvel's Slate

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discusses Iron Man's "big part" in The Avengers 2 and speculates as to when we might see a fourth instalment in his solo franchise. He also talks about Edgar Wright's Ant-Man and whether Disney will put Marvel movies on the back burner for Star Wars.

In an interview with Superhero Hype, Kevin Feige has talked more about their plans moving forward. Despite the fact that it's still unclear whether or not Robert Downey Jr. will reprise the role of Tony Stark after Iron Man 3, Feige reveals that the character has a major role in The Avengers 2 and that they're yet to decide on when we might see a fourth instalment in the solo franchise. He also talks talks more about the importance of bringing Ant-Man to the big screen and whether Disney's recent acquisition of Lucasfilm will impact Marvel's movie slate in coming years.

On Iron Man's Role In The Marvel Cinematic Universe Moving Forward:

"Well, no, I think people say that because we’re not developing “Iron Man 4.” Currently, as you may imagine, Iron Man is a big part of “Avengers 2” and that’s what we’re focusing on and what Joss (Whedon) is focusing on. So where we go after that remains to be seen, but certainly, “Avengers 2” being the next appearance, the next storyline for Iron Man. Do I think there will be another Iron Man movie? Of course I do. Who will be in that movie and who will be a part of that movie? Who knows? And how far down the line will it be? Will it be right after “Avengers 2,” will it be a few years after “Avengers 2”? Who knows? For as advanced as we are in terms of the advanced planning that we do, we’re already looking out to 2015, 2016 and that’s further than most people look out. Beyond that, we’re still not sure."

On Why He's So Determined To Bring Edgar Wright's Ant-Man To The Big Screen:

"Well, it’s for a couple of reasons. The primary reason is because I met a very talented filmmaker who was about my age almost ten years ago, we got along very well. He had a movie called “Shaun of the Dead” which hadn’t come out yet and he said he really wanted to meet to talk about “Ant-Man”… and this was even before we were on the studio. This was just at the dawn of us even discussing becoming our own studio. But we met with him, he had a cool idea and when we became our own studio, we hired him and Joe Cornish, who as you know, went on to do “Attack the Block” and become a very talented filmmaker in his own right. At the time he hadn’t done much at all but we really believed in him and we believed in Edgar and they delivered a draft that was sort of unlike anything we’d done before that was sort of wholly Edgar and wholly Marvel and a very fun spin on the Ant-Man mythology. And if you’ve seen the in-progress test we showed at Comic-Con last year and there’s been some clips of it we’ve released. People go like, “Ant-Man, is that a joke? What happens? He talks to ants?” And Edgar and his team put together this test of basically just Ant-Man going down the hallway and it is so kick-ass and so bad-ass, people instantly go, “Oh, I get it! Now we see what it can be.” And that of course is only 1% of what the movie is, but it’s certainly enough to get people to realize, 'Oh, that’s why you’ve been thinking about this for so long.'"

On Whether Disney's Star Wars Movies Will Mean Less Marvel Releases:

"Well, we’ll see. We’re definitely doing our own thing and that’s what’s been so great about the relationship with Disney. As they said, 'We’re purchasing Marvel because we like what you’re doing.' Keep doing it. And that’s been three years now and that’s certainly what they’ve allowed us to do, so I hope that means I can get into an advanced screening of a new 'Star Wars' movie, that’d be fun (laughs) but I don’t know how much more it will effect us than that."

I'm pretty ok with no more iron man movies. After seeing it last night, and leaving pretty disappointed, I really could care less. The movie is funny, and fun, but no where close to a good iron man movie. Great tony stark movie, but Jesus that twist killed the movie for me (don't worry I'm not that douche futurepast)

@MrSpock, Edgar Wright has a very busy film slate and always does have many movies going at once. On top of the fact that Ant-Man is going to difficult to get right (although I think they nailed it with the screen test) along with the fact that want to establish Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in the MCU before fox gets to them first, it makes alot of sense.

be like your namesake and stop whining.

Ok here's my 2 cents:

Political correctness caused the Mandarin's charachter to be bastardized. Beyond that, I am disappointed in the movie's general tone and plot line. The sfx and decent action sequences to not do enough to redeem this film.

I'm really looking forward to what they're planning on to Ant-Man.

@LEVI, dude, just stop. You clearly don't know jackshit of the Avengers, read some wikipedia and is talking like you are the oldest marvel reader out there. Using a "Rulk" comic to back your opinion says a lot. You couldn't care less about the team formation. What you want to do is to hate and that's all. Congrats, you did hate.

Fogs - 5/3/2013, 6:36 AM
@LEVI - Well, I share your taste regarding these Fox & Sony movies.

What I really don't think relevant is the formation talk. These are movies and they're clearly using the Ultimate-verse for these, with some 616 elements.

BTW: Sorry if I was rude in my last post. Re-reading it I saw it was rarsh.

Spidey 2 is streets ahead of everything Marvel has done so far.

'cept maybe IM. Thats the closest Marvels got to a masterpiece. As a whole, tho, Raimis Spidey trilogy is soooooooo much better than the IM. IM2 and IM3 were huge disappointments. And IM2 is almost as bad as Spidey 3.

Please stop milking the Downey cow. Please. Am I the only one who actually LIKES the use of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch? Fox obviously had no desire to use them (despite all their chances...) so Marvel Studios merely beat them to the punch. Don't worry my little babies-we WILL get Ant-Man and the Wasp. Now sleep sweet dreams.

I took in Iron Man 3 last night. I have been a huge fan of every Marvel Studios movie. That being said, Shane Black should not be allowed near a Marvel movie again. "The twist" was retarded and horribly executed. The climax was pretty awesome, but ended horribly. It was good, but far from great. Pretty disappointed.

Just saying that quicksilver and Scarlett Witch were avengers before black panther, ms marvel, or any of those mentioned above crept antman and wasp.
The original team was iron man, thor, hulk, antman, and wasp. Cap came in on issue 4. So he is usually included in the original line up. When the avengers took a leave of absence Cap remained and the main avengers hired another team with cap as the leader. That team was Scarlett Witch, quicksilver, and Hawkeye. Since we already have Hawkeye, the twins at the next logical team additions if we are keeping with the source material. Hawkeye and widow were given to us because the antman flick wasn't made yet. Here is hoping Hank and Jan replace them in avengers 2, then we will have the first two line ups on screen.

Levi, calm thine tits man.

Iron Man 3 JUST came out. I haven't seen it yet. You didn't spoil it for me, I accidentally read that in a comment like a week ago by some other bastard who's been banned or whatnot. Just sayin....

Oh yeah, just saying - the movie just came out. People are going to be talking about Iron Man 3. It's all the rage now, as I know you are perfectly capable of figuring out on your own.

Right now, you're coming across as something of a douchebag, and I know you're not - but why are you so pissed off about Marvel? Is this a discussion we need to have AFTER I see Iron Man 3 tonight?

On the topic of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver - they were Avengers before Black Widow. Issue 14, I think. If they truly are in the sequel, they'll be the first Avengers with actual superpowers.

There is an actual reason for Ant-Man and Wasp not being put into the Avengers that early on. You can't have Wasp without Hank, and to introduce Hank in Robert Downey Jr's movie would be a discredit to the character. He'd be shoved in the background like what ALMOST became of Mark Ruffalo. Don't need a think tank of three genius scientist/engineers.

Also, who's to say Falcon won't be in Avengers 2? Likewise with War Machine. You also can't incorporate Ms Marvel without having aliens, and yeah - that would be tired.

ParisSun - 5/3/2013, 6:56 AM
Levitikus has not fanboy cred at all. Were you complaining when Cap, Black Widow and Hawkeye were introduced in the Avengers before Ant-man and Wasp. That should tell you that they weren't doing an exact origin story.

You also seem to keep avoiding the FACT that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were Avengers long before everyone on your list except for Wasp and Ant-man.

The founders: Iron Man, Hulk, Wasp, Ant-man and Thor. Hulk didn't even last long.

Cap came in a couple of issues later and a few issues after him were Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

So you may not like the characters or believe they belong in Xmen but real history says you are a liar and very wrong.

I collected three comics religously: Avengers, Justice League of America and The All Star Squadron. Believe me Scarlet Witch (more so) and Quicksilver have plenty of history with the Avengers.

@Charlie, don't sweat it man, what we're dealing with here is a classic case of "comic-book envy". This happens when an introverted nerd witnesses another nerd experiencing joy.

This triggers the juvenile response mechanism to try and spoil this joy. This is termed "Nolintiss" by the psychology community.

Apparently it is quite common. It is not logical, but it is often so.

MrSpock,
You are unworthy of your title and avatar. The real Spock would do his research.

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch had NO IDEA Magneto was their father - they thought they were orphans when they joined the Avengers. Not till over 200 issues into the Avengers did they learn of their true parentage.

Fair enough, I couldn't disagree more, but fair enough.

I don't dislike Marvel Films. "IM" is great, "Avengers" is a wild ride and "Captain America" is good fun, but "Thor", "IM2", "IM3" and "Hulk" are, imo, childish, overrated and underwhelming.

So, they're just gonna do the "Ultimates" all over again? Cus, let's be honest. This ain't the 616 Marvel Universe. They're adapting the U-Universe.

I'm not criticizing, I like the Ultimate Universe way more than the 616 Universe, myself.
