Joss Whedon Talks More About His Role As Marvel Studios' Creative Consultant

Part of Joss Whedon's deal after helming The Avengers not only included returning to direct the sequel, but also acting as Marvel Studios' "Creative Consultant" in their Phase Two plans. Here, he clarifies what exactly his role with the studio is.

Joss Whedon did a last-minute polish of the Captain America: The First Avenger screenplay while working on The Avengers for Marvel Studios, and after the latter went on to gross over $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office, they wasted no time in signing him up as both the director of the sequel and their Creative Consultant. Talking to Empire Magazine recently, Whedon had this to say about his role overseeing the solo movies of Phase Two which are all leading to the reassembling of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in 2015. "Kevin is terrific storyteller and a criminal mastermind with these films. He knows exactly what he's trying to do, not just to serve the whole universe but with each movie. Having the opportunity to help realise, to say, "Well, isn't this what you're going for over here?" ... I mean, I'm not going to get in the soup with some other director. I'm going to say what I think of screenplay or a cut and then I leave the room bowing, because you don't take that away from someone. Ultimately, Kevin is the Captain. I'm Black Widow. Well, I'm dressed as Black Widow..." So, while Whedon obviously doesn't take too much of a hands on approach in terms of interfering with the vision of the other filmmakers, it will come as a relief to many to learn that he at least keeps a watchful eye on them.

Sign him up for Phase III. He doesn't have to direct, just have him there.

If Kevin is overseeing everything, Joss doesn't really have a lot of input. He gives his opinion and moves on... I wish he had a bigger role.

@MARVELPSYCHO79, a movie being terrible or having terrible reviews doesn't necessarily mean it's going to bomb. Every Transformer and Twilight film got terrible reviews, but that didn't stop them from making assloads of money. A bad movie isn't always a bomb.

We'll see.

So real difference between nolan and Whedon, according to what he just said Whedon kinda fixes what the studio tells him to do and oversee, still He has to do whats he is told to and Nolan..... Well he usually tells the studio what to do and what no to do.... I guess it is quite obvious who is a better director and the most creative one.

lol, he's got such a weird sense of humor. It's interesting that he doesn't have a more hands on approach, but I guess it makes it so he doesn't step on other directors toes

@79: Once I heard it was a M Night movie, I tuned out

Still I like iron man 3 a lot but I really don't see why he was fearing it. It was good but not THAT good and possibly the weakest of the movieverse. Hopefully he won't make Thanos a joke like The Mandarin. D':

Say what you want about Whedon but he did make a great super hero film. A 'team' of heroes working together and he pulled it off.

Not judging, just an observation.

Whedon is either very confident with his masculinity or...
