Joseph Gordon-Levitt In Talks To Direct And Star In Big Screen Adaptation Of SANDMAN

The Dark Knight Rises star recently made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Don Jon, but he is now finalising a deal with Warner Bros. to produce Sandman, with an eye to both direct the Vertigo Comics adaptation and play 'Morpheus'.

It was rumoured last month that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was somehow attached to David Goyer's take on Sandman (which he recently pitched to Warner Bros.), but now Deadline have confirmed the news in an exclusive report. According to the site, the actor is finalising a deal to produce the adaptation of the classic Neil Gaiman comic book with Goyer. However, that's not all! He's also interested in both starring - as the lead protagonist - in the movie and making it his next directing gig after the recently released Don Jon. A writer is also currently being looked for. As they point out, "The Sandman series shifts between horror and fantasy, and the central character is Morpheus, the personification of dreams. After being held captive 70 years, Morpheus escapes, gains revenge and rebuilds his crumbling kingdom while trying to adapt to the times." How do you guys feel about this news? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

I know ppl can't picture him as Sandman, but I'm pretty confident that JGL will knock it out of the park. He's a smart dude.

Producing? Sure. Directig? I'm not sure it's a good idea, he hasn't got any experience with this kind of film yet. Starring? I don't think he's a good fit. But he's a good actor, so maybe he'll pull it off.

Star in? Yea, that might be OK. Direct it? No, he's not ready, not for something like Sandman

This is way more interesting material than Ant-Man for him. Still, this seems like something that will be further down the road.

I've said it before, I love JGL, but I think they could find somebody far more suited to Morpheus than he. It could be far worse, though. They could be casting Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.
It's kinda cool that they might actually be making a Sandman movie though. And, by the sounds of it, it's starting from Preludes and Nocturnes.
I still think a series of animated DVDs might be a better, to start off with. That way, they can be completely faithful to the source material, please fans as much as the fans can be pleased and then see what works and what doesn't in order to re-adapt for a film series.
I hope, as a fan, they don't try to cram all the elements into something that is completely different to the books.
Goyer's good, but his adaptative work tends to create an original piece, whilst staying faithful to the source material. In this case, I think that that approach would dilute the original work too much. Sandman is classic and specific. I think he would have to attempt a more literal process.
I remain, tentatively curious. But have faith that this work will flow in whatever directions it may. Like a dream.

Gliderman@ Fvck yes. Everything should be DCCU from Man of Steel onwards. Even Red 2.

This could work. Orson Welles, Mel Gibson, and Clint Eastwood have all directed and starred in fantastic films, so I'll give JGL the benefit of the doubt. I'm curious about whether this will take place in the DCCU and what storylines it'll cover.

I don't see the point of setting The Sandman in the DCCU. The story has nothing to do with superheroes, and the points of connection are almost non-existent. Constantine is heavily featured in one issue and Doctor Destiny too, but that's about it. Batman, Superman and Darkseid have one minor appereance in The Wake and I think Martian Manhunter has one too somewhere.

Do people really need to know that the first Destiny may have orchestrated the destruction of Krypton? No, the answer is no.

@MarkV

I know that you could be joking since that's kind of a recurring joke lately ("Benedic Cumberbatch for everything!") but I could see him in the role. He has the physical looks, and his voice and presence are very close to what I picture as a live action Morpheus.

It's not going to be in the DCCU since it's made by Vertigo, so fill free to be uninterested.
