More From Whedon On AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, 'The Vision,' 'Age of Miracles' And 'Hawkeye'

Joss Whedon now talks in-depth about "Team Ultron," otherwise known as the Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver. In addition, the director talks briefly about Hawkeye and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Thanks to Collider, we now have more full Joss Whedon quotes from months ago when several reporters visited the London set of Avengers: Age of Ultron. After explaining his hesitation to return for the much-anticipated Marvel sequel, the writer/director was asked about The Vision's look and whether or not that was still being worked on as filming was underway. "No, we make them as close as we can," he replied. "The stunt guy, we have to make allowances for the shape of his face and padding and things that we’re putting on him, but they’re not meant to look different. Basically, what usually happens is, one of the guys, Ryan Meinderding or one of the guys on his staff draws something unbelievably beautiful, and we try to create that in real life, and it takes a long time. The first tests were very Violet Beaurogarde. It really took a long time to get to a place where we felt like… even though we will work on him in post… he walks on and we go, 'Oh, it’s The Vision! My God!'" Reporters shared that reaction when they saw Paul Bettany on-set in makeup/costume; Whedon added: "Yeah, and of course, I wanted Paul to play this part since before I wanted to make an Avengers movie. Let’s face it, it’s about cheek bones, people."

Talk then turned to Pietro and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson), aka Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, as Joss Whedon was asked about the twins being introduced in the "Age of Mircles" and whether or not war technology is the only explanation of their origins. "[Baron von] Strucker’s been doing experiments, and he’s got the scepter, and he’s been using alien tech to do them. It’s kind of where I landed with that, but look for an exciting retcon in Avengers 6!" After reiterating that every character in Avengers: Age of Ultron is "strong but damaged by power," Whedon said of the Scarlet Witch, "Her damage pre-dates her power, and these kids, they’ve had a rough history. But is she in an idiom with which I am comfortable? Why, yes sir, she is. (laughter)" About connecting the Maximoffs' relationship with the Iron Man/ Ultron dynamic, which will seemingly drive the plot, Joss Whedon said that they did initially feel like two separate stories. "They did, and that was, you know, a concern for Marvel for a long time, but a lot of the working out of the story was how do we get these things connect?" he said. "I’m not probably going to explain that, but it’s very important to me that they do feel like part of the same story, and part of the same universe, and all their origins are tied up in each other."

When asked (again) about Quicksilver appearing in X-Men: Days of Future Past, Joss Whedon admitted that it did not change his visual approach to the speedster in Avengers: Age of Ultron. "There are some things that we now would probably care to avoid just so that we’re not… But we were never doing the same version. Obviously at some point we’ll go into slow mo because that’s what’s fun about a super speedy guy. For me, what’s fun about Quicksilver isn’t necessarily seeing Quicksilver, it’s seeing the Avengers the way he does. And, they really took to the mattresses with that one scene, but he’s just a very different guy in ours and I think we’re just kind of proceeding as planned." Finally, when asked about Clint Barton, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Whedon reassured that we'll find out what he's been up to since The Avengers. "Um, yeah, we are," he said. "'Cause something’s up with that boy. That’s all I’m gonna say." What do you think?

Marvel Studios presents Avengers: Age of Ultron, the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to the Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure. Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision. Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” published in 1963. Get set for an action-packed thrill ride when The Avengers return in Avengers: Age of Ultron May 1, 2015.

That's a relief, because I was wondering the exact same thing in another thread: the Twins start out under HYDRA control, presumably Ultron eventually takes them under his wing, and then they somehow end up with the Avengers. It seems pretty disconnected at first, but from these quotes it sounds like Whedon managed to find a way to integrate them naturally into the story. Sounds good to me!
