RUMOR: The Avengers To Film in Manhattan with a SHIELD Helicarrier!

The last news we heard regarding Marvel's highly anticipated "Avengers" film, was the lost of an admired cast member. But with a film uniting heroes such as Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor, you can't be down for too long.

Now Bleeding Cool reports something that should bring some form of enjoyment.

According to one of our very well placed sources (think: USA, west coast, sunny, lots of big buildings that look like warehouses, people zipping about in electric carts) Joss Whedon’s movie version of The Avengers will be shooting in Manhattan next year. What exactly will go before the cameras isn’t yet known – or, if we’re being honest, hasn’t even been completely decided – but the plan at the moment definitely involves the SHIELD Helicarrier. And apparently there's' going to be a great need for "Avengers" extras on the streets of Manhattan next year.

For those who don't know, in the Marvel comics, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier is a flying aircraft carrier specifically designed to be itself capable of independent powered flight in addition to the conventional functions of aircraft carriers. It is the signature capital ship of intelligence/defense agency S.H.I.E.L.D, which has made it's way into "Marvel's Cinematic Universe through The Incredible Hulk, heavily in Iron Man 2, and presumably in Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. But never has the Hellicarior been mentioned or referenced to.

"Bleeding Cool goes on to say that Design teams have been working on The Avengers for some time, even before the appointment of Joss Whedon as director, and have developed some ideas of how much of the film will look. As regards some key items – including the Helicarrier – the concept artists shared their preliminary designs with the producers of the Marvel 4D exhibit at London’s Madame Tussauds in order to create some consistency, which you can see the trailer for HERE

Regarding the Manhattan filming as well the Helicarrier overall, you can take with a grain of salt...for now. Whether it's true or not, "The Avengers" supposedly begins production February 2011 with Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) confirmed. And Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Nathan Fillion (Ant-Man), and Eva Longoria (Wasp) unannounced. The film hits theaters May 4, 2012.

Epic find DCMF! :) I posted an article a little while back that mentioned the Helicarrier (actually from an interview with the guy who directed the Madame Tussauds movie) so I'd say it's a definite for The Avengers!

Sounds awesome to me!

In my Avengers story I wrote last year (it's one year aniversery is the 17) I had the Helicarrier get shot down over New York, that would be awesome to see.

I hope they go with something like what I had. Everyone on here seemd to like it.

@AsianAvenger - But Jim Caviezel is Dr. Strange!

You know, I missed all this hulk news over the weekend, but here's my two cents: Norton was great, but ultimately I want WAY more Hulk in the Avengers than Banner, so I don't really care that much.

Who cares? Norton is not going to be in it, so the Avengers and this news doesn't matter anymore! The rest of the stellar cast will just suck without Norton's few minutes he would have been in it.

Pffft... Who am I kidding? Cool!! :-P

Land I didn't realize there was room for anyone else on Norton's dick with you there. He's a great actor that fully embodied the part and gave hope to the fans who where let down by Bana, and Lee.

Hopefully it will be better than Hasselhoffs Nick Fury rendition of the helicarrier. Well what the showed of it. And I don't care who plays Bruce Banner, they could just cgi some random guy in for all I care. The Hulk is the big show and hopefully the CGI will be better.

@tadrob,

I know he is a great actor, and he did an amazing job in The incredible Hulk, but he is gone so people just need to move on. Along with the fact that Christopher Nolan has said numerous times that the Joker would not be in the next Batman film due to the passing of Heath Ledger cause "Heath was the definitive Joker, and it wouldn't feel appropriate to readdress that character."

People just move on.

No fanboy worth his salt will be able to boycott this film. They could use a crew entirely composed of 3rd world child laborers and serve the actors bald eagle for breakfast and condor for lunch and I STILL couldn't keep myself away.

Hawks@ I thought it was pretty obvious, but not everyone may be familiar with my other posts. ;-)

Now, I could handle Matt Bomer as Banner. Just keep him away from Superman and Batman. Too wimpy for those roles. Still...this is about the Avengers and Banner isn't a necessity for the Avengers.

I'll say it again, Sharlto Copley is the only one who would get me as excited as I was to see Norton in Avengers. Copley is the man.
