Once again speaking with The Wall Street Journal, 'Bruce Banner' actor Mark Ruffalo discussed Marvel's forthcoming Joss Whedon-directed superhero team up movie The Avengers. In addition to revealing one of many ways he prepared for his incredible Hulk role, Ruffalo also elaborates on the movie's essential idea.

Mark Ruffalo says the coming film, “The Avengers,” is an allegory for Americans.

“You have all these disparate egos, superheroes in this and that, and they refuse to give up some of their positions in order to make a more perfect union and to join the team,” Ruffalo says.

“That’s really what the whole movie is about: subjugating your own best interest momentarily to further that of the whole,” he says.

“I didn’t know it a year ago that it was going to speak to so many of the issues we’re having here in the United States and throughout the world, the same kind of theme,” he says.

“These movies reach a lot of people, they’re our modern mythology,” Ruffalo says. He followed comic book superheroes as a kid. “I think a lot of the beliefs I have and cherish were fostered by the decency of our superheroes, and what they were about and what they were fighting for.”

Ruffalo said when he learned he got the role in “The Avengers,” he bought a boxed set of the series for himself and his 10-year-old son. “He was completely addicted. He totally got it,” Ruffalo says. “After the first episode he turned to me and said, “Papa, he’s so misunderstood!’”

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble on May 4, 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to "Marvel's The Avengers," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013!; and “Thor 2” on November 15, 2013.

I'm really excited to see this. It sounds like the characters really are going to be developed, and we will actually get to see the characters interact and face their differences.

I don't know. The thought of a team of indestructable superheroes fighting an alien army seems pretty overrated and 2-dimensional. I love Ruffalo though, it'll definitely be a go-to movie for me this year though.

I don't believe him. He sounds like a politician. He said two things that I completely think he's flat out lying about. But whatever. Bring on some OFFICIAL LIVE-ACTION HULK.

@Pendaghast, well I think its surprising because when I was ten I really didn't care for the actual behavior and characteristics of the Hulk or his personal struggles, I just wanted to see him SMASH stuff. So I think its something that a child would look deeper than just the surface of a character.

Few scenes in modern cinema can compete with the Hulk vs. the military on the college campus...i really am a huge fan of the rage and action in TIH, and i REALLY hope we're not getting a "Why nobody like Hulk? Hulk sad" kind of story

Ruffalo should be okay in the movie besides it's not like his the reason we'd all watch the movie but his alter ego.
The only one I never felt was right in any of the movies was ScaJo as Black Widow just didn't feel right not very believable as a Russian spy. She does remind me of Miss Piggy though.

As for the TDKR teaser trailer doesn't seem all that exciting; don't know how people are praising a movie that shows very little. I'm doubtful at the moment for TDKR killed off Two-Face and introduce Bane WTF.

Yeah I dont believe that second quote either but to be honest, it's completely irrelavant and has nothing to do with his performance as Banner/Hulk or the his journey in the movie
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 1/3/2012, 12:28 PM
@Lilvic92 You're right, it doesn't. A lot of things he said was irrelevant to "his performance as Banner/Hulk or the his journey in the movie ".

All items considered when it comes to discussion.

They seem to be saying that The Avengers will have social consequence - like The Dark Knight trilogy - but it's too late for that. It's an action movie with dudes in brightly coloured costumes. They should have gone with The Ultimates storyline. Then they'd be making the Dark Knight box-office figures.

I've said that whatever actors and directors say about their movies in their interviews is irrelevant. Just because Anne Hathaway talks about Hedy Lamarr doesn't mean actors in a Marvel film do less prep work or take their roles less seriously. What matters is what appears on the screen. As for his quote about the first two-hour telefilm of the TV series (which is the smartest live-action treatment of the Banner psyche to date), it's actually pretty cool that his kid 'got it'. The script is more layered than Ang Lee's or Leterrier's film versions.
