THE AVENGERS Once Included Peggy Carter; Joss Whedon Wanted To Add Another BIG Villain

Giving a rundown of elements of Marvel's The Avengers movie that didn't make the cut, writer-director Joss Whedon reveals 'Peggy Carter' was originally included, among other things!

Chatting recently with The New York Times, Marvel's The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon offered up a vague rundown of pre-production elements that "didn't work out." Revealing the only disagreement he initially had with Marvel Studios regarding another "big" villain he wanted to add, Whedon also had a "beautiful" piece jotted down with Captain America's Peggy Carter!

Kevin Feige, the Marvel Studios president, had told me you essentially won the “Avengers” assignment with a single e-mail.
They – they being Marvel, and most they being Kevin – know exactly what they need, so they really do let you make the decisions. And there was only one point of conflict, in terms of what they needed.

What was that?
It’s about the villains. I kept trying to add one. And they weren’t behind it. I feel like we made it work but that was the only thing we disagreed on.

And that character was –?
[teasingly] A specific figure. I wanted to have another guy in the mix, somebody who was up to their level, because I have all these strong guys! That was trouble. They felt the structure worked without it and it would be too much. But apart from that, everything they wanted, I completely agreed with. It’s like, “We want the Avengers not to settle their differences through talk.” O.K., good. I’m for that, too. It’s a superhero movie. Superheroics must take place.

What would be an example of something you didn’t figure out until later in the process?
One of the best scenes that I wrote was the beautiful and poignant scene between Steve and Peggy [Carter] that takes place in the present. And I was the one who was like, Guys, we need to lose this. It was killing the rhythm of the thing. And we did have a lot of Cap, because he really was the in for me. I really do feel a sense of loss about what’s happening in our culture, loss of the idea of community, loss of health care and welfare and all sorts of things. I was spending a lot of time having him say it, and then I cut that.

There are elements of “The Avengers” – alien invasion force; mysterious artifact – that we’ve just seen in other movies that haven’t fared very well.
Believe me, there are tropes in this movie that will appear as nothing else. I referred to the Tesseract more than a few times as “the MacGufferact.” The invasion at the end, that was stipulated. And all I could think was, Great, I know where I’m going. My whole thing was, make sure that none of this feels like a checkmark. But more than once, we watched the trailer for some movie and went, “Oh, are their aliens better than ours? Are they too similar?” Panic, panic, panic. At the end of the day, it’s like, Was there a story about human beings threaded through all of that? The superhero team movie is going to have a certain structure, but no cars turn into anything else except piles of rubble. Cars magically transform into burning cars. That part I’m happy about.

ULTRON!!! LOL.

I would have loved to see Steve meet with Peggy in the present day, but she would be 95+ years old. So I guess its safe to say she is dead.

And it makes more sense if Sharon Carter is Peggy's granddaughter.

Hehe, see? The cars turn into burning cars! This is no TF4!

And my guess is that he was talkin' about Thanos. Hope he's just diverting the attentions and Thanos is at least in the post-credits scene.

Wouldn't have made much sense to have him bemoan the "loss of health care" seeing as how that was only just starting to become widely available in the 1940s.

He never said they didn't use the villain or won't in the future.

I heard that the post-credit scene introduces the next villian. This could be the villian he's talking about. We'll see though. Also, it sounds like he's taking a swing at the people comparing this to Transformers lol.

I have a question and I hope everyone can help... Why in the new Avengers commercial does Tony Stark call Thor a demi-god? Thor is a god... Hercules is a demi-god. Don't get me wrong I am soooooo looking forward to this movie!

Word, ISN. I hate it when Cap gets used as just a mouthpiece to bemoan how things aren't like the good old days, especially since the old days weren't really so good.

Can't wait for this movie!

I have a feeling that the aliens in this movie won't be anything at all...they're just aliens that Loki found when he felled into da portal at the end of Thor.

Hope I'm wrong

I would have liked to see Red Skull in this one so it would kinda explain what happened to him. Im guessing he was reffering to thanos which could be great in sequel too

Yeah, I'm thinking either Thanos or MAYBE Enchantress or Executioner and Marvel nixed it because they're saving them for Thor. Who knows, really? Have to wait for Avengers 2.

"loss of health care and welfare"?

*shakes head disapprovingly* I'm disappointed in you, Joss. Do you think America has LESS institutionalized health care and welfare now than during world war 2? Because that makes NO sense. Of course, some attempts to improve these institutions have actually made them WORSE, but definitely not SMALLER.

If you read Furys Big Week

SPOILER...

SHIELD has custody of whiplash armor, Destroyer, Abomination, The Leader.

I see Masters Of Evil in a sequel!

It would be better if they included Jane instead of Peggy IMO. And in my opinion they kinda need to include her.

I think Fartman is right. Why would they worry if the aliens looked like any other aliens in other movies if it was from marvel comics?

And i hope they show what happened to all the other villians in the MCU like the leader, destroyer, abomination, etc.

cant wait for this movie, 2 more weeks

BluePallando is so right. Besides, just the success of the civil rights movement should impress Cap.

okay folks we know the movie is all about getting these avengers together....
I suspect that any of the footage we have seen so far relate to the end of the movie, where they will ASSEMBLE!

........and then they will tease the life out of us for the follow-up.

Considering the pics of the Infinity Gauntlet---pretty sure he is referring to Thanos. And Wow! how much would we geek out seeing Thanos trade blows with Hulk? If after the credits or at the end there is a Thanos tease for a sequel then 2015 couldn't come fast enough for the masses.
I am going to the screening this saturday in nyc and Im hoping thepost credit scene is left in because I originally saw a sneak screening of Iron Man and the Nick Fury scene was not present until opening night showings.

also --Super Adaptoid was powered by a shard of the Cosmic Cube and that would have been a grand battle on film. Avengers #289 for those who collect.

I can see loss of "community," but not healthcare and welfare. We have WAY more institutionalized programs regarding the two latter issues than we did in the 40's, thanks in no small part to FDR. Who, for all intents and purposes, was a commie. I would've been been PISSED if Whedon had Cap whining about some leftist nonsense... Let's keep politics out of our CBMs!!!
