Joss Whedon Clarifies THE AVENGERS Aliens' Identity!

Although early screening reactions revealed the long-time speculated identity of the alien invaders of Marvel's The Avengers, Joss Whedon has officially clarified it!

Once it was announced that mischief-maker Loki would be the primary villain of Marvel's The Avengers, and wouldn't be alone, many speculated that among the many extraterrestrial races of Marvel Comics' universe, the shapeshifting Skrulls were guaranteed. However, with highly-praised screenings being held recently, director-writer Joss Whedon held a press conference to set the record straight.

"The alien race are the Chitauri -- or a version of them -- because they are not one of the key races and they don’t have a storied history. That wasn’t the point. I know this debate will go on long after I’m dead. I would say it was the Kree-Skrull race."

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble on May 4, 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to "Marvel's The Avengers," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013!; and “Thor 2” on November 15, 2013.

if the film didnt really explain who the aliens were then why the hell did they want to keep it a secret for so long?

The comment almost reads like "Basically they are generic" I am still excited to see this movie, but sometimes and it is rare they seem to say things or a see a clip that I think "Oh...that just doesn't seem right"

I dont know why some people thought they were Frost Giants.....they clearly dont look like them. Then again they dont look like Chitauri either or any other alien race in the Marvel Universe.

No I didn't. But at least they look better than the animated version. I woulda dropped a brick if they were Karbonites though.

Whoo! Well, at least we can put down the debate of the I.D. of these aliens. In the back of my mind, no matter what I said, I had a gut feeling it would be the Chitauri. Hmm, I wonder how they would tell us the I.D. of the aliens in the movie? Maybe Loki would've told The Avengers what they were. Or maybe one of the members could identify them. Oh, we'll. [Frick]ing pumped for the movie!!!!!!!!!! :D

Stay EPIC, my friends!

It could have purpose r the future villain but also could have ramifications for a Cap sequel.

I'm happy with that. Not as obscure as I thought they may turn out to be.

They said from the beginning the aliens identities weren't important, so of course, most people thought it was.

I'll say one thing for sure. Marvel definitely did a good job at keeping the I.D. of the aliens a secret for quite some time.

I'm glad they chose a more obscure race of aliens for this movie. There is just too much going on in a film like this not to mention not enough time to go into the back story of the aliens too. Good call Joss.

What's weird to me is the way they have downplayed the importance of the alien race in interviews, Joss and others responsible for the film. There's been this whole "well yeah there's aliens but they don't matter" kind of mentality. Hope it's not like that in the actual film. I don't want the enemy to be just a filler -- a reason to get the team together. The opposition to the Avengers should be just as great, just as important.

Wow, I just counted 5 people "claiming" they knew it was the Chitauri. Bunch of morons, you assholes guessed nearly EVERY alien race in the entire Marvel Universe. So no, to those 5 I counted, you didn't "call it" or "have a gut feeling" you simply "called" and "had a gut feeling" about every rumored alien race in Marvel, so stop pretending like you [frick]ing knew, when it's obvious that you didn't.

GrayMatter

While it's cool to finally know who they are after all the mystert, they said right from the start that the alien race wasn't important, so in the big picture this isn't really any earth-shattering news.

But correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Chitauri just the Ultimate Skrulls? So, is this going to eventually tie into the Skrulls in a different movie or something?

Or maybe in the MCU the Skrulls and the Chitauri are just outright different alien races.

@MurphmanProphecies Technically that was a lucky guess. But Feige confirmed ages ago that Fox owns SUPER Skrulls, while Marvel Studios do in fact own The Skrulls.

Knowing what race the aliens are, really isn't important to the story. The film does, however, name them.

Notice Whedon including "or a version of them" in his statement. They are planning on using "the Skrulls" (especially after you see the mid-credits scene) in the future. Whether that's in the sequel, or the one after that is unknown.

I love how everybody fought to not know their identity and people got pissed at each other for spoiling it, then Joss just goes and announces it. Ha.
